"Dark Ascent" dives into the unexplored depths of post-rock, where each note is a step into a dark and compelling world. With this track, I revisit the melancholic atmospheres I cherish, while incorporating a darker dynamic and a sharper rhythm. The long build-up, punctuated by striking guitar riffs and enveloping synthesizers, reflects a personal journey towards discovering bold and profound sounds. This title marks a new milestone in my musical quest, exploring how tension and resolution can translate into emotional power and resonance.

PROGRAM NOTE
Machines are slowly overtaking mankind; they are beginning to possess a life of their own. Androids, humanoids, computers, four-wheel vehicles, and other machines are weaving their way into our lives in both obvious and subtle ways. People in developed societies depend on them for their lives. As hypothesized in many science fiction books and films, our massive expansion of technology will eventually create machines with free will: they will be able to think and feel and will have the power to ultimately destroy us. If too many are given the power of reasoning, they may decide that we need to be terminated; we are creatures with many flaws.

Humanus Ex Machina is a work about the hypothesized, eventual downfall and deterioration of humankind resulting from being overthrown by machines. The three percussionists represent the machines and play traditional percussion instruments and “found objects” such as computer floppy disks and brake drums. Humankind, represented by an alto saxophonist, senses that mankind is about to be wiped out by its creations and triumphs over them with the greatest weapon of all, the human mind.

In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars“, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet recounts a pivotal, emotionally charged episode from the poet’s shared past with his beloved: a clandestine evening visit to her dormitory, guitar in hand, during which he sang “Into the West“, the elegiac song from The Lord of the Rings films. The poem juxtaposes the solemn beauty of the moment with its underlying transgressions—its secrecy, its breach of boundaries. Drawing on Tolkien’s mythology, it frames their relationship through the lens of permanent wounding and unattainable healing, aligning their love with Frodo’s mortal suffering and the longing for a redemptive passage to Valinor.

The shrine ordained for me was always you.

The universe tipped sideways as I sighed
Within your doorway. Never should I leave!

Of simple hearth and home, a life we’d weave.

I played for you a song from Elder Years,
Of Mithlond, where the scarred seek Valinor.
Sobs wet your sculpted cheeks; you shook with tears.
Our pathos pled for salves from healing shores.

Into the West

Atomic Cataract is a creative  project bringing together songs written over a 3 year period by Adam Smallwood and Ryan Morse.  Themes range from Insomnia, dystopian worlds and social dysfunction with tracks typically starting as hour-long jams which are recorded then cut down, re-arranged and re-written before adding vocal parts.

All tracks are recorded at HP Studios in Ringwood and feature studio musicians Harrison Perks & Andy Smooth.
