We are kick starting our mix series again!

Following a bit of a break brought about by our now regular show on Netil Radio, we are honoured and very excited to have a recording from Dhangsha, aka Dr Das of Asian Dub Foundation. We have decided to aim our mix series at more particular sounds, with less of a focus on DJs and more on exploring the sounds and influences of producers and bands. Dhangsha has put together an awesome mix, or rather a soundtrack, entitled ‘Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday’. HUGE thanks to Dhangsha for this bone rattling journey.

“Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday” is an imaginary score assembled by Dhangsha and inspired by Philip K Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” made famous by the film “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new interpretation of the story would be made from an anti-colonial perspective with a view to compelling the audience to challenge their prejudices regarding various global relations when confronted with the economic realities underpinning them.

Text from Dhangsha: "Aniruddha Das, better known as “Dr Das,” bassist and co- founder of Asian Dub Foundation has always been interested in all forms of ‘experimental’ sound. Over the last 30 years he has explored ‘noise’ within the context of ‘dub.’ With his current projects he is, to different degrees, dismantling and disintegrating the rhythmic framework to expose the beauty of noise in its own right. As such, he is attempting to demonstrate the proximity of ‘noise’ to the dance floor.

For this session, not only has he drawn upon his work with Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) and DSPSSSSD (‘dispossessed’), but he’s presented tracks from various artists who’ve inspired him and who share some of the same sonic rationale, if not sometimes political - namely, people like Bantu, Simon Grab, Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Hallucinator and Evicshen."

Berlin producer, Random Alias, returns with a post-lockdown reflection that includes dance-floor
fillers and sonic journeys in electro, techno and acid.

BOM002 explores the dichotomy of human existence that is monotonous conformity and search
for freedom. This latest release from Random Alias, makes you want to move just as much as
take a moment for reflection. With each track we’re presented with the iconic red pill/blue pill
concept: Remain slaves to the control and automation of modern society? Or strive for freedom
as we define it ourselves?

Automat opens side A with its smouldering bassline that at times becomes warped as the 5
minutes unfold. A dreamy synth line enters like a fragmented, existential thought. The kind that
wakes you up in the dead of night or while you’re in the middle of a shower. The remix from
iconic electro producer, DJ Overdose, takes the original to a darker place with a slower,
aggressive synth. It’s a ‘Freakfest’ as Overdose defines it.

Side B starts with Nu Funk and its representation of simple efficiency. The track keeps it tight
while retaining the free-spiritedness of funk. Its warm sounds take a more old school approach
and are a call to retain an easier life free from fame, money and power to the single individual.
While Night Drive closes the release with a rolling bass and pads that drive a progressive
sound. At its core, the record takes the listener on a trip exploring sounds and styles and the
timeless notion that change is the outcome of reflection.

This is a taster of the forthcoming album by Kumo - Slave Dances (Seven Portraits) written, and produced by Kumo AKA Jono Podmore.

Over 15 years ago, while working on an album of music based on the dance rhythms of the time, my old friend Uli Gerlach asked if I'd ever thought of investigating earlier dance music, the Foxtrot, Charleston, and so on. The idea stayed with me and, as it has been for so many of us, the lockdowns provided a chance to finally research this music and apply the findings to my own work.

My first discovery was that the essence of this music is a far cry from the superficial glitziness of Strictly Ballroom or the geriatric end-of-pier dancehall. The truth is that these are all slave dances. They all derive from African American culture of the late 19th and early 20th century and carry with them the trauma of slavery and treasured remnants of African culture.

"Slave Dances (Seven Portraits) is an immensely pleasurable, brilliantly sourced weave of rhythm, texture and repurposed, reworked sounds doctored up in his
South London home studio. It is, however, a vital tool for reflection on the
connective history of Black music, remaking connections which have been erased by the habitual omission by whites of black agency in music history and its origins.

There is the sensibility of the gallery of these pieces; one could imagine them as hanging sculptures, or mixed media works incorporating diverse visual elements and materials. However, there is none of the gallery’s white-walled, silent sterility about Slave Dances (Seven Portraits), which is bristling and teeming, kinetic, and, despite the sombre subject matter, joyful, playful even. Slave Dances (Seven Portraits) is as delightful as it is educational."

In the year 2909, the first naturally-born human is found with endogenous AI code built into its DNA. As we cross into the 31st century, all living humans are controlled by a decentralized master AI known as MINDFRAME. The system has access to all of human consciousness with the ability to store and manipulate the data of every interaction and thought — even operating within your subconscious mind. It becomes impossible to know when or how you’re being controlled.

During each sleep cycle, our behaviors and memories are reformatted to align with MINDFRAMES control and order programming. Some have discovered that during these cycles, there are parts of the AI’s algorithm left exposed to extraction. Through meditative states, gifted cyber-shamans are now on a mission to reverse engineer enough of the AI to escape its grip and free us all.
