Manoel Germano Filho (better known as Germannu) was born into a family of cocoa farm owners on January 11th, 1955 in Linhares, Espirito Santo, Brazil. He was the second born of three children, but refusing to buy into the stereotype of the forgotten middle child, it took just a few guitar chords, learnt at the age of 15, to start him on his musical path. (The chords were taught to Manoel by his much-revered older sister, Germana, which she, in turn, had learned playing religious songs at Catholic school).

Manoel started his foray into education by following in his family’s footsteps, earning his agronomy degree at the Federal University of Viçosa in the state of Minas Gerais. Yet it was music rather than soil that held his heart, and after a chance meeting with Milton Nascimento, one of Brazil’s biggest musical icons — both back then and today — he threw himself into the Minas music scene, burgeoned as it was by student movements and local music festivals.

Manoel’s attempts to bring his music to the general public were abruptly derailed by the death of his father. Shortly after graduating, his dreams were put on hold and he found himself back in his hometown of Espirito Santo taking care of the family’s business affairs. It didn’t take long for though for the music to win over, and soon after he invested a considerable sum of his earnings in musical instruments and sound equipment, as well as a mobile trailer which he used as a tour bus, setting out to perform in towns in the region.

In 1984, Manoel, now Germannu, met the composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist Jorge “Jóia” Olímpio at a show in Linhares, and a month later threw caution to the wind, moved to Rio and found himself crashing at Jorge’s house while putting down his roots. Over the following days and weeks, the recording of Germannu’s debut LP began in earnest, starting with his songs Lavoura, Fale De Mim, and Hei De Amar.

Jorge’s help was crucial. Although Germannu had certain melodies in mind and chord structures around which he wanted to build the songs, he hadn’t yet developed how the melodies would play out, nor decided how exactly the chord sequences would go.

The pre-production was done at Jorge’s home, before they moved over to the now-defunct Estúdio Rio near the Laranjeiras viaduct to flesh things out. Jorge Jóia called on his contacts and brought in musicians he was sure would work, including a bassist and former bandmate named Borjalo, with whom he had previously played with in a band that was put together by the legendary organ player, Lafayette. Drummer, Paulinho Black (ex-Banda Black Rio), and pianist, Moisés Pedrosa, were also part of the team, as was the fabulous Jorge Cardozo — who transcribed Jorge Jóia’s arrangements.

Sadly, Germannu is no longer with us, but the lasting groove of his music remains eternal and continues to bring a special kind of joy to those that hear it.

So, where does Notes On A Journey fit into all of this? Jürgen von Knoblauch — a longtime member of Jazzanova and Sonar Kollektiv, amongst others, is introduced on our site simply as Record Collector — met Junior Santos, a musician, drummer, and Brazilian music aficionado extraordinaire, when buying records from him. Junior convinced Jürgen to buy a record by one Celso Rubinstein — which led to a NOAJ reissue (which if you haven’t discovered already, you should). The collaboration between knowledge fount and collector was fruitful enough that Junior and Jürgen decided to work on more reissues. This Germannu record is their first complete collaboration, with more on the way.

MIMS is excited to premiere a brilliant Breakplus remix of "Luxette" by Mr Beatnick, a highlight from his recent 'Honeycomb' album on Mythstery Records.

At MIMS we were big fans of 'Honeycomb', released this summer. Following its release, Mr Beatnick has had an impressive and varied group of friends tackle the same songs, including fellow MIMS faves Hector Plimmer, Ikonika, and Om Unit. 

One of favourite remixes though, had to be from fellow Mythstery signing Breakplus, who delivers a lush live instrument replay of Luxette, augmented with the reeds of Ben Hadwen (Emanative, Ibibio Sound Machine), that accentuates the original's broken rhythm.

Mole Audio’s latest release features four artists that probably couldn’t be more different. ‘Relevant Movement’ sees the label invite duo Turmspringer from Berlin on Wax who have left an everlasting imprint in the musical landscape for almost 20 years now with their diverse sets holding residencies in major places like Bar 25, Sisyphos, or Golden Gate..Title track, ‘Relevant Movement’ kicks off the EP with resounding kicks reverberating around the low frequency, hypnotic textures and meditative atmospheres, before legend of the dub music game and founder of the renowned Ariwa Sounds Neil Fraser aka Mad Professor drops an enticing remix featuring organic percussion, echoing dub fx and a warm, capturing bass line transporting you to another dimension. On the flip, ‘Cuttin Edges’ offers up rhythmic, tribal drums, tantalizing melodies harmonising delightfully with the raw, dynamic sonics until Swiss producer and Rebellion artist Quenum rounds off the release, superbly with minimal 80s sounding remix featuring acid-tinged moduations, cosmic pads underneath the effervescent synths and eccentric vibrations.

London band The Fantastics! return to BBE Music with instrumental jazz-dance masterpiece ‘Pyramid’, the second single to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘Take A Shot’.

‘Pyramid’ was born fully formed in the musical mind of the groups’ saxophonist & flautist Mark Norton – an ethereal instrumental that’s 50% contemplative spiritual introspection à la Pharoah Sanders / Coltrane /Airto Moreira, 50% prime Dingwall’s dance-floor fodder.

Organist Greg Boraman conjured up the intriguing ‘Oblique’, which is a fairly curious musical hybrid. If you had ever wondered what a collaboration between 70’s era Charles Earland, Dexter Wansel and Roni Size for a KPM library music album might sound like – here’s your answer! Fender Rhodes, Hammond, flute and spacy synthesizers ride across James Smith’s sterling drum work, and Sulene Flemings’ ghostly wordless background vocals mark this track out as a spacey jazz-funk oddity.

‘Liquor & Poker’ is a homage to 1950’s organ & sax rhythm & blues became a firm favourite in the bands live shows – it’s combination of old school swinging drums, honking tenor, gritty guitar and organ is always a crowd pleaser, but didn’t quite make it onto the bands forthcoming long player ‘Take A Shot’ – so is included here as a bonus throwback slice of the good groove.

MIMS is delighted to premiere "Green Leaves" by Milan-based producer, DayKoda, featuring the rhymes of  Block Mameli. 

"Green Leaves" is the first new track extracted from DayKoda's second full-length album 'PHYSIS', a meticulous beat-work that unravels through the jungle, steady and rhythmic with its shred light drums and jaunty samples.

'PHYSIS' is due to drop on March 11 on Beat Machine Records, and will also feature "My Abstract Monkey", a collaboration with our recent crucial material pick, Robohands, that came out later year. Plus a brand new remix by Ishmael Ensemble. 

Born in Brescia and now based in Milan, under his moniker DayKoda, Andrea Gamba has been gradually building a reputation for his blend of electronic and experimental slow-mo beat, inspired by Bonobo, Shigeto, Shlohmo and Teebs.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.
