Emerging from the city of Lyon, Caravel has captured the scene by storm with her trademark sound, a concoction of industrial grittiness, unbound energy and relentless assault. Her musical roots reach back into her childhood, where she played the guitar and the drums. Her transition to the world of dark dancefloors and pulsating strobes came about when she first helped out at the Nuits Sonores in her hometown on Lyon. She has been affiliated with multiple organizations such as Pyramiid Production and We Are Rave, but has now finally settled herself with the infamous Tapage Nocturne, the biggest promoter in Lyon. Her unique personality and her undying commitment have made her an artist to look out for. More of her own productions are also underway, so keep an eye out for that!

BCCO Mix Series 113: Caravel

he Berlin-based producer duo Kalte Liebe keeps drawing their inspiration from Post-Punk, Grunge, Dark Wave, EBM, and Techno.
Coming with years-long experiences in different musical projects ranging from beat-making over metal bands, and more they started back in 2019 using a drum machine, a bass synth, and a wasted microphone, only.

Authentically recorded in a 12 square meter room Kalte Liebe started out as an experiment combining diverse influences by the likes of DAF, Falco, Thomas P. Heckmann and more into their distinctively analog, raw, and bassline-driven style.

While their productions are mostly consisting of an elaborated mixture of EBM and old-school Dark Wave paired with technoid characteristics and captivating, roughly distorted vocals in German and English the duo equally stands for tool-ish and highly energetic Techno – modern, pounding, and dirty.

With recent releases on labels like 01010100 Records, Vitus Curse and BFT, even more strongly performing self-releases like „Ego EP“ and their recent work „Dopamin“ they are slowly establishing their name in the scene and quickly growing their audience. With loads of unreleased work and their Vocal Live Performance Kalte Liebe is soon to be heard all over.

"Eines Abends lernte ich dann nach einer langen Partynacht einen DJ kennen und habe ihn zu meinem Sklaven gemacht. Er musste mir dann das Auflegen beibringen und mir mein Equipment zum Üben kaufen, denn ich will besser sein als all die anderen! Damals wie heute findet man mich nun in den Clubs dieser Welt, manchmal auf dem Dancefloor und meistens hinterm Pult. Raised in Berlin based in Tbilisi, Thomas Hessler’s inspirations are deeply rooted within both cities.

Within a short time Hessler played his way from small underground clubs of Berlin all the way to various venues in Europe, South & North America. Earning his respect in clubs like Berghain, Fabric, Bassiani and Tresor is just proving that his approach towards Djing with high energy, emotions, intensive journeys of electronic music and its recent history is the right way to go.

His productions are set within energetic driven techno, deep melancholic electronica, informed by classic Detroit and Berlin sound yet also exploring more modern experimental boundaries. His early releases on labels just as IMF, Graphene and countless remixes gained him the deserved recognition from a wealth of contemporary DJs and further laid out the foundation to his story.

2022's „Intermission EP“ on Ben Sims Symbolism label that Resident Advisor described as „Hood-ian techno of the highest order.“ as a reference to Robert Hood is just another piece in his selective list of releases on labels like Unitas-Multiplex, Bassiani, Blocaus and Crossing.

His art inspired Laurent Garnier to select „Perception“ for the exhibition „Electro“ with a focus on the history of electronic music at the Philharmonie de Paris in 2019 while Luke Slater remixed it in 2018.

The way Thomas Hessler comprehends our fast-paced world is nostalgic but still with a glimmer of hope for the future. Always preferring quality over quantity in his productions, patience and perfectionism are two qualities he prized over all else.

For this Livestream we chose the Documentary Koyaanisqatsi as Background; The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning “life out of balance.” Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds — urban life and technology versus the environment.

Regal86 has published more than 40 albums and more than 400 tracks online, in only a couple years, strongly defining his style.

What was your inspiration for this mix:

Lately, me and homies have been talking about “tracks you want to hear when you are walking into the club.” That’s what I wanted for this mix, a bunch of sassy, vocal heavy, ravey progressive cutz that gave you the feeling that if you walked into the club while any of these tracks were playing you’d be like “damn what is this?” Or “who is deejaying right now”. 

I also always wrap every mix around one song, I call it the “thesis” of the mix. For this one it was Shytalks - Touch The House released in 1995 on Consolidated Records. I imagine what it felt like walking into the club in 1995 and hearing that track blasting.... It was prolly crazy af.... It’s the perfect “club walker” track!

I don’t really know….. all I know is that there are certain aspects of myself that were left in 2023, and certain parts of myself in 2024 I intend on uplifting.

Advice to the new upcoming DJs:

If your goal is to get booked at clubs/raves then your primary focus should be on recording club/rave ready peak time mixes. I think about mixes like the sports homies that go back and watch films of their games. Listen for everything you did wrong (and right!). Record like one or two a month and go back to listen to them a lot. I give myself the 3-6 rule, if I can’t listen to the mix 3-6 times in a row without getting tired of it, then I dump the entire thing and reset the mood/vibe. I know a lot of people say that soundcloud mixes shouldn’t be perfect but I kinda disagree. At a party, you have some of the liberty to slightly mess up or maybe drop the wrong track because most people paid a cover…. so they’re not gonna dip if you kinda mess up. But with a soundcloud mix, people have 100% ability to change your mix in less than a second if the tempo or vibe slips away. If your vibe is consistent, your mixing is tight, your tracks are cohesive, and contribute to each others sound and to the overarching tempo/energy, and you ran that shit back 3-6 times, then fire off those mixes to soundcloud labels/podcasts in different cities so they know your sound and you’re on their radar. That’s how I got my first few out of town bookings. Oh and expect to get ghosted a lot (I still get ghosted all the time lol)

What's next for you in 2024?: 

There’s a few things on the back burner rn, on a low simmer, but I don't wanna speak on them until they’re ready to be served. As of right now, I am just happy to be living in LA and down the street from Trax Unit. Gyration Station has a lot coming up this year and I am so grateful to be working with them. I am just happy to be healthy, have a career I love and that allows me to have fun on the weekend and for having a string of consistent bookings. That’s basically it, I'm excited for whichever gig I get to play next. #every #track #i #blend #is #a #privilege
