Protis has been writing music since 1998, when he was still in high school. The name Protis came about from watching the TV show Pokemon; his original name was Piggy, and just how Pikachu evolves into Raichu, well he decided that Piggy would evolve into Protis. The name has stuck ever since then.

Protis is a big fan of computer-based music.  The first computer program he used for music purposes was Cubase Lite on good ol' Windows 3.1 operating system.  Over the years he moved on to Cubast VST, where he further developed his skills as a songwriter.  Most of his early recordings were instrumental works, as at the time he was unable to compose decent lyrics.

After a while, Protis decided to leave the realm of General MIDI and progress into the world of loops and samples.  He accomplished this by using the ACID range of products.  Countless hours were spent with this brilliant piece of software, coming up with lots of cool beats.

Protis has also dabbled in the FruityLoops software, now called FL Studio.  He utilised FL Studio to write songs which contained his first self-penned lyrics.  He was surprised at just how well his lyrics came across in each song, fitting in well with the music.  And all this from someone who could never write words to his songs!

Inspired by alternative acts such as alt-J, Perfume Genius and Frou Frou, and energised by dynamic performers like Billie Eilish and CHVRCHES, their dramatic musicality showcases a band who’s shifted into a higher place.

Brisbane-based soloist Quarter Short fuses the brooding alt-pop storytelling of Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” era with neo-soul into 90s inspired anthems to carry you home. The driven and nostalgic tracks are delivered by a disarmingly honest voice and are tickled with quirks inspired by Eminem, Offspring and Blink 182.

Bella Deer is an Australian singer/songwriter and performing artist from Geelong, Victoria known for her emotive storytelling, powerful vocals, and expansive sonic landscapes. With a sound that blends raw lyricism and heartfelt melodies, her music is often compared to Florence and the Machine, though she maintains a distinct voice all of her own. Bella has steadily built a dedicated following, captivating audiences with her emotional depth and raw performances.

Her live shows are a true testament to her talent, headlining sold-out performances across Australia and sharing stages with notable acts such as Husky Gawenda, Thirsty Merc, and Thando. Bella's single "Care Too Much" earned her finalist spots in the prestigious APRA AMCOS Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Competition, as well as an Honourable Mention and finalist recognition in the International Songwriting Competition, further solidifying her place as one of Australia's most promising emerging artists. Internationally, she performed in Seoul, South Korea and Italy at the Ferrara International Buskers Festival.

With the upcoming release of her debut EP in late 2024, Bella continues to push the boundaries of her sound. The EP delves into themes of personal growth. As she prepares for a series of EP launch shows, Bella Deer is firmly positioned to leave a lasting impact on both the Australian and international music scenes.

You’ve probably seen or heard some of WASHINGTON’s stuff over the years, what with the operas and TV soundtracks and TED Talks and voicing cartoon characters and that really dark eye shadow she wore while bringing showtunes back at the ARIAs in 2010. 

Maybe you forgot during all the colour and noise that while Meg Washington can do heaps of impressive stuff, the most impressive thing she does is write great songs. Meg doesn’t blame you for that; for a while there, she almost forgot that herself. 

So here we are, then. Dark Parts. Dark Parts is the single that begets the album, but we’ll talk about that later.  A bonkers, kind-of pop song that’s in ⅞ time.  It’s the sound of pop music tearing at its own fabric, writhing in the darkness as Washington, ever the maestro, conducts this chaos from the centre.  

She worked with Sam Dixon (Sia, Adele, Meg) and Konstantin Kersting (The Jungle Giants, Mallrat, Tones and I) and the animated video is stuffed with intriguing creatures Meg’s been hand-drawing in her daydreams and wickedly assembling in real life.

Honestly? It’s just some really impressive shit.
