"Unlike the other daytime curators, Lena Willikens chose to open La Sucrière's impressive main hall on Friday, playing alongside her usual back-to-back partner Vladimir Ivkovic. The two looked relaxed behind the decks, swaying, smoking and sometimes smiling. The crowd, less dense than during the other headliners due to the early start, were also in a good mood, using the extra space to feel out each beat of the slower selections. Much of the two hours felt like existing in the lagging moment of a sci-fi movie, just before a spaceship launches into warp speed (in a good way, I promise)."

They’re a founding member of TUF, a local collective focused on community-building and creating visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. Proudly presenting TPF–007 from upsammy, the singular Dutch artist with ears trained on the unknown.  

When we asked rising (and rising) star Peach to curate a night with us on November 1st 2019, she reached out to long-time friend and fellow Torontonian Club Fitness, and De School resident, upsammy. The latter, whose refined taste and genre-elasticity has been quietly garnering her a cult following in recent years, steps up to the plate from TPF–007, a live recording from her three hour warm up set that night. 

The result is one of the most imaginative and masterful early door sets we've had the pleasure to host at Pickle. Departing from the high-octane / tempo sounds upsammy often champions, expect a winding journey through dub, experimental bass, oddball techno and plenty more besides.

"I’ve started to embrace some of the things I felt were problems to me earlier on in my DJ life, lately—e.g. how messy, non-linear and confusing my DJ “flow” is, often times things end up sounding like a messy emotional soup. This is no different. I’ve been feeling pretty contemplative lately, it’s funny how the ending of an arbitrary amount of time will do this to you. This year marks a decade of me being involved in electronic music and more than half a decade that I’ve been working in social work. I’ve changed a lot over this time period but a few things have remained constant. Both in my work (talking to people who are suicidal) and in myself, one of my biggest takeaways this decade is human being’s remarkable capacity to heal themselves. Music was a huge part of this process for me, so I wanted to put together a mix that reflects this. The mix contains a lot of tracks that remind me of specific times, feelings and people this past 10 years. As Russell EL Butler says, “I play healing music because I need to be healed”." - @ccl-tuf

Last December @CCL-tuf and I were invited to play an all night back to back set at a party called High & Tight in Seattle. H&T is one of those parties that you dream of playing, where every detail from the sound to the setting is perfectly thought out and where the crowd stays with you for every twist and turn. We ended up playing for almost 9 hours (although actually I had to leave for the airport before the end.) This excerpt is the first 3 hours, slowly and carefully heating the soup before bringing things to a boil.

There's nothing quite like a trip down memory lane, especially if it means we get to re-live one of our absolute favourite On the 5th Day gatherings.

Go back in time to July 21st 2018... following a good few months of excited anticipation, we finally welcomed the hugely talented, boundary pushing electronic music virtuoso, ASC (James Clements) to Corsica Studios, and heck was it immense!

The night left a beautiful imprint on our hearts and minds. The love and appreciation in the room for what was ASC's only European gig of that trip was cosmic, and the energy on the dance floor pure magic from the start to finish.

We couldn't help but dig through the archives to retrieve his hybrid set from the night and we've no doubts that settling into it will give you as much happiness as it did us.

DJ Plead is a comparatively new alias for an artist who has been busy on the Melbourne scene for years. Jarred Beeler started as part of a DJ trio, then played in a percussive dance duo known as Poison, but as DJ Plead he has made most impact. Drawing on the Arab influences that come from being half Lebanese, he layers Middle Eastern percussion on top of lithe club rhythms and the results on labels like Nervous Horizon and DECISIONS are electrifying. 

This week's podcast proves he's also a master of threading together unhinged grooves and weird syncopations in the club. At times the drums are piled up so high and unevenly they feel like they're about to collapse in a heap around you, at others they're drawn out and deeper, sinking you into a hypnosis. Worldly drum sounds and intoxicating eastern melodies colour in the airwaves throughout, making this a series of glorious sonic collisions that up to one hell of a dance.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Never thought of myself as an artist. I'd say casual beatmaker and varied dj.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. Since 2012. Things have changed so much, way more interesting DJs and diversity in the scene. 

3) Tell us a little bit about this mix.
I wanted to include old and new music but with a cohesive mood. Dub, jazz, psychedelic down tempo that progresses into a bit more upbeat stuff. It's more of a challenge to mix those types of songs and it's something I don't get to do in the club as much as I'd like, so it made it really exciting to put together.
