I heard this Ravel piece about 15 years ago for the first time in a concert, and was an immediate fan of it, one of my overall most favorite piano pieces (the whole set).  And it is one of the most difficult ones to play. Fabulous job here, Bernard, it was a pure delight to listen!

Thanks, I am more satisfied with this recording than any other I have done, I suppose because of the long time I've spent with it, and that I think I let the the melody stay just below the surface of the water, as Ravel suggested. It is an awesome piece of course!

Revered pianist Alexis Weissenberg's gorgeous solo piano arrangement of an equally gorgeous song by French singer/songwriter Charles Trenet. The story goes that Weissenberg himself never performed this piece in public because he was afraid programming popular songs (amongst other trivialities) would damage his career and image as a classical pianist. I share no such reservations and firmly believe that great music will always be great music regardless of its genre or who is playing it. This piece was originally published along with five other Trenet arrangements in an incognito album under the alias 'Mr. Nobody', the identity of whom was not revealed to the public until many, many years later.

This is a piece that I have been enamoured with since the very first time I listened to it. I finally began working my way through it over the summer and the end result has brought me a truly immense amount of joy. I'm certain that this is a work that will stay with me and find its way into my programs for a very long time. Inspiration was drawn from the always great, always extraordinary Marc Andre Hamelin who is also the one that brought this piece back into the concert hall by transcribing it by ear from its original 1950s recording by Weissenberg, or rather, 'Mr. Nobody'.

I am a pianist from the United Kingdom. I studied Piano at Chethams School of Music with the late Charles Hopkins (a pupil of Gyorges Cziffra, John Ogdon and Alexis Weissenberg).


While at Dartington College of Arts I continued performing solo piano and contemporary chamber music. During postgraduate study in Manchester I gave public recitals including one of the earliest performances of Maxwell Davies' piano sonata.
An extensive twenty year career in music and creative arts education followed, alongside incredibly exciting meetings with John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Toru Takemitsu and Karlheinz Stockhausen, whose Klavierstück XII I studied with Ellen Corver at the composer's first course in Kürten 1998. In 2010 I began widely expanding my repertoire of romantic and impressionist music.
I have also studied Japanese language both at London University and in Japan and I also play the Koto a little.
I am grateful to all the listeners around the world who enjoy my musical examples every day here on Soundcloud! It is very encouraging to find new audiences this way.  Especially thankful to all of you who have bought a track or whole album from iTunes, Amazon or CD Baby in full CD quality.
