Known as one of the premier diggers in Amsterdam and as one part of the @sentinelislanddisco crew, one can expect anything from feel good, uplifting disco to the most wanted Caribbean records we all drool over from the man in charge.  

For this mix, Barney has put together a summertime compilation consisting of UK street-soul, boogie, funk and anything that’ll make you want to order another drink (social distanced of course) and let the night continue!

INTERVIEW WITH SFDM

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Hello boys, thanks for having us! Usually when we prepare a regular mix (with no "theme" or such) we try to be as wide as possible in terms of genre. we like our mixes to be something fluid and natural , evolving from track to track into a different mood or kind of sound,  from downtempo to uptempo (and sometimes back)
So our scheme usually is like this: we choose a bunch or records to create the spine of the mix and then adjust by substituting or adding other tracks until we reach the point when we enjoy playing it without having the feel "oh i miss something here". 
We are happy with the final result of this mix , hope listeners will enjoy the ride too!

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

We have a  strong bond with a lot of records we play, some have a story, many others don't. Most of the time is about feelings that records is capable of  giving to us. This mix has the peculiarity of containing few finds from "quarantine online digging" which is something we could never imagine to experience in our like (i mean the quarantine part). One of these special one is Madeleine Uzho - Satisfied. no better medicine to cheer up a day of lockdown that finding a good record like that for cheap.

Q: Do you have a special digging process and/or what kind of things do you look for in a record when you’re out digging?

We have no science behind this, when we go crate digging we try to look for different elements  that catches our attention like label, musicians involved, date, sometimes just artwork or logo. the step after is searching for a reference on YT or SC in case there's no record player at disposal (we do enjoy a lot flea markets so sometimes is just blind buying!). Online things are easier because of search filters : )

Q: Is there a record, that has continued to be in your wantlist over the years?

There are a lot of records always in the wantlist. first one i recall is  Unique - Sankofa

Q: Music bonds people together. Any local heros/parties you would like to shout out? 

We would like to shout out to all the nice guys and crews in Milan we've met along the road, especially Eternal Love, Luca from Rocket Radio and the crew of Polifonic for inviting us to play in their festival, unfortunately postponed to covid. we were so happy to be invited to play there, but who knows, maybe in the future we will! ; )

Ivy Barkakati is a Barcelona-based dancefloor doyen with music out on Hospital Productions and Modern Obscure Music, and vocals gracing tracks by Cardopusher, Furious Frank / Mind Dance, and Roza Terenzi. She recently teamed up with Venezuelan producer Phran to form IVAN, and on their Delicious Fantasy EP they make soundtrack music for transcendent dancing experiences. His music took him all the way to Tokyo, Copenhagen, Brussels & Stockholm in 2019, and in 2020 Richard has remained busy sharing his music discoveries in radio shows at (Rinse France, Ola Radio Bordeaux, IMR Paris, Rocket Radio Milano, Depot Radio Copenhagen), mix series (De Kat Memwa from St Petersburg) and with a 60 min film/mixtape exploring lots of Caribbean and Brazilian rare grooves and epic films for the Danish crew Back To Future Sounds. We are very pleased to present Tem from Freedom of Groovement on the Bside Incoming Series. He’s an event promoter, music researcher and a bit of a music obsessive.

The ethos is : No Borders on the Dancefloor. Not only does the music break the bounds of geography and explore all avenues but their projects also have a global outreach. Contributing to Amsterdam’s Radio Tempo Não Pára, more recently with HMTW in Curitiba Brazil, but it was with Bristol based 1020 radio where the journey began.
Each episode on 1020 explores the music of one Nation, the underground, the sub-genres, the particular taste of a land.

Bevan's influences as a DJ first started with the deep, garage house sound from NY and Chicago. From here he built up a record collection largely consisting of modern soul, disco, boogie, house and UK garage. You can expect to hear these genres in his mixes along with newer influences he has picked up in recent months
