The Barefoot Adventures returns as I dive into Libya, a troubled but hugely historical country situated amongst the Sahara Desert. After speaking to some new friends from Libya, I began to learn of the complicated situation and history of this place. Within Libya there is little to no self-made pop music industry, but various kinds of Arab music are popular, such as Andalusi music, locally known as Ma'luf, Chabi, not to mention Arab classical music, and Libyan Reggae which came to the surface in the 90’s.

In the south the Tuareg (Berber) have their own distinctive folk music. They play a one-stringed violin called an anzad, as well as a variety of drums.
Two of the most famous musicians of Libya are Ahmed Fakroun and Mohammed Hassan.
Rhythmic clapping is also common in Libyan folk music.
Traveling Bedouin poet-singers have spread many popular songs across Libya. Among their styles is Huda, the camel driver's song, the rhythm of which is said to mimic the feet of a walking camel.

This set means a lot to me. Two years ago, I discovered the genre of HipHouse for myself. (Side fact: In the 1980s, Hip House emerged as a crossover genre, combining elements primarily from House and Hip-Hop. Unfortunately, its popularity was short-lived, and it faded away in the early 90s.) Since then, as I've delved into the genre, I've been working on a pure 80s/90s Hip House set. It hasn't been easy, as many songs are hard to find, and the quality of the tracks understandably varies. After months of searching, I finally managed to put it together, and thanks to the support of @luvaffair_vienna, I was able to showcase it at their party with @toytonics. I couldn't have asked for a better venue, atmosphere, and crowd for this set. The dance floor was on fire! Thank you all for that! ❤️

"Some years ago I stopped playing 1-2 hour slots, sharing the stage with 5 other dj's. I figured warming up the dancefloor had become a lost art - and coming after someone who wanted to shine through the use of very obvious and intense tracks was a nuisance. 5 different dj's - 4 of who would play the same crappy overused sound design popping everywhere from Tulum to Berlin.
I decided I would only grace the turntables if I had total control of the night, music wise - which would allow me to explore slower tempos, beatless grooves, analogue disco oddballs, and 30 plus years of dance music - and build the intensity little by little. It would allow me to create a musical context.

Somehow these couple of sets showcase this ideology. My love for electronica and balearic, and my obsession with house music.

First up is a slow, melodic widescreen mix of electronica, progressive jazz instrumentals, and William Orbit's ambient from the 90's that fit the balearic philosophy. The guitar and dubby sounds as main elements throughout the set.
A few tracks in, more Ibicenco sounding tracks pave the road for old school Hardfloor breakbeats, and into what I feel sounds like a post-new wave from Timothy J. Fairplay, before going into the subtle dembo rhythms by Léna and deep house from Roots Unit, with its snare, positioned halfway, as a continuation of the Jamaican sound inheritance. Stubb and Mara keep the dub feel flowing, before closing with a cheesy guitar new age rendition by Alan Parsons.

Second set pumps the bpm's a notch forward. 
Futuristic house music, but rooted in the past as a timeless testament of the evolution of house music. Lysergic synths from Gebby Dibson and Acid Pauli pulse against house drums and loose percussions.
Melodies and minds soar as Above the Clouds and Seven Cities color the skies before some acid house tracks create tension for the dancefloor. The set comes to a close in rave breakbeats and the slow drum & bass of Skanna.

In almost 3 hours we have been able to navigate from electronica instrumentals, ambient, breaks, dubby tracks, deep house, house, acid house, techier stuff, drum & bass and new age parmigiana, similar to what a full night of me playing would be. Playing different flavors, intensities and genres, but in what I believe to be a steady narrative of energy current flow.

The instrument is a Kawai VPC1 controlling a Clavia Nord Stage 2, using a sampled Yamaha C7 grand piano, and... straight from the 80's a sampled preset named "Touch Perco" from the Yamaha DX7 mk2 synth.

I return to my travels and head to the north of Africa, a land of ancient and mystic beauty, Morocco.

There are many traditional music styles in the countries history:
GNAWA 
(a spiritual music from an ethnic group dating back to 11th century slaves encaptured in Morocco, whose music is tightly linked to the connection with Allah, using the main rhythm of a double headed drum)
BERBER /AMAZIGH 
(an ancient style known for its handclapping rhythms, drums flute and fiddles) 
ANDALUSIAN 
(a Spanish/Middle Eastern influenced music of the north part of Morocco which mainly uses vocals, the lute, fiddle, violin, drum and tambourine) and many other ancient styles.
