‘Weather Patterns’ is a 5 minute and 44 second point-source, acousmatic piece composed for 5.1 surround sound orientation. The main sources featured are the human voice, via field recording and in-studio capture, and modular synth, using both VCV Rack and analog modules, namely the Doepfer A-100 and MakeNoise’s Spectraphon, 0-Coast and Strega. 

The piece functions as an etude in sound design via the combination of parametric modular synth and the human voice and is comprised of three movements. 

‘Weather Patterns’ was processed and mixed entirely in Logic Pro X, using a variety of specific effects such as reverb, tremolo, echo, distorting and EQ and volume automation to enrich the timbre and spatial depth offered by using five channel composition and is intended to be listened to in complete darkness.

‘Steel Wool’ is a 2 minute 3 second etude-based point-source Electroacoustic piece composed for 5.1 surround sound orientation. The compositional choices and form were instigated by a ‘scaffolding’ of speech to be replaced with sounds manipulated to share similar parametric qualities and changes. 

The primary sound sources featured are field recordings of a groaning metal seesaw, a wooden bench, jangling keys, an indoor fountain, a toy gong, and a Roland Juno-106. ‘Steel Wool’ was processed and mixed entirely in Logic Pro, using a range of plugins, namely a noise-gate, reverb, echo, compression, distortion and pitch, EQ and volume automation to enrich the timbre and spatial depth enabled by five channel composition, while allowing for an accurate reinterpretation of speech parameters. 

The piece constitutes four movements: groan, tumble, rest, and groan II, each containing their own iterations of different parameters of speech.

‘There is an ocean underground’ is a five-minute, six-second point-source, acousmatic composition in 5.1 surround orientation. Built entirely using processed field recordings, analog modular synthesis, and Alchemy - a sample-manipulation virtual synthesizer - the piece serves as an etude in texture-lead composition, agglomeration, and tension and release. It features iterative moments of stasis that crescendo into immersive sound masses. 

Field recording samples consist of metal sheets, a seesaw, chains, marbles, glass cups, running water, mechanical drones from escalators and generators, and horse hooves. Each was selected for its distinct timbre and granular character, then paired with complementary synth patches to accentuate its innate spectral qualities. Many sounds were sculpted to evoke the sensation of rippling and splashing water, contributing to the piece’s submerged and tactile atmosphere. 

All processing was done in Logic Pro X, using reverb, distortion, echo, and precise EQ and automation to enhance the spatial depth and timbral richness of each sound and their collective Gestalt in the five-channel space.
