I was joined for a very special conversation discussing the work of Nik Nowak and Jessica Edwards from  http://sounding.systems/ - for my Learning Curves show on @thfradio. 

We discussed concepts of sonic warfare and the use of sound as a weapon. Nik Nowak has created an exhibition entitled 'Schizo Sonics' shown at the KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst with a specially commissioned text written and performed by Jessica Edwards. As part of the exhibition, the 'Symposium' was created - an 8 hour online streamed programme including discussions and performances from Dr. Steve Goodman aka Kode9, Boda Mrozek, Dr. Keratin Meissner, Uta Sarah Farina, Perera Elsewhere, Scotch Rolex, Lord Spike, Heart Hyo Jin Shin  & Sojin Assembledhalf.

The connecting themes of her radio show “FEELS” on Bristol’s Noods Radio, her productions and her eclectic DJ sets are bass and dance music. Bakläxa loves all things bass-heavy and danceable. She moves through genres like hard-drum, grime, hyperpop, footwork and bubblegum bass as if she has never done anything else in her life.

AM: Hello! What have you been up to recently?

Hiya! I’m always up to a lot. I’m a freelancer hustling around town all the time so if i’m not teaching music production to kiddies, I'm editing videos to pay the rent. In terms of my music endeavours I'm regularly rehearsing with my band TONI&MASH, we’ve been playing fairly regular shows over the past few months so that feels good. Other than that I'm usually at home with my cat Pam, cooking or chilling with friends. Winter is coming...

AM: Where & how did you record the mix & what was the idea behind it? A theme as such or?

I recorded the mix at my mate’s house, they have a far better setup than I do so I always prefer to record there. I didn’t overly have a theme behind it but I do like to bend in weird directions when I can. I felt for AM you’d like some freakier sides to my selections so I was happy to go there :p

AM: What have ya been digging and listening to recently?

NTS all the way. I recently deleted my spotify subscription as I realise how much I disagree with that format of representing (and not paying) artists. So NTS in general has become a vital staple even more than before. Through them I've locked on to a few new artists I've been quite excited about. Been enjoying SHILOH: Lost For Words by John Glacier & Body of Water by dolphin midwives a lot recently.

AM: So, you also have a bi-monthly show on Noods called ‘Feels’ and a show on THF Radio in Berlin, ‘Learning curves’. Both contrasting with very different themes, with LC touching on more social change issues and Climate topics. Can you tell us a bit more about them please? Themes and reasoning for the shows etc?

‘Feels’ with Noods is my baby. I started that show shortly after just starting playing out myself and it’s served as a fantastic way to connect with other selectors, practice mixing regularly and to showcase my music discoveries. The show has now evolved into having its own themes, everything from Feels Wet, Dreamy, Dope, Calm, Polyrhythmic...and beyond.
Learning Curves was predominantly born out of the pandemic but had some roots growing before. I had been involved in different community based exchange groups where important topics and conversations were regularly being brought up for the past few years. I had started to notice that I am a bit of a workaholic and I have the tendency to let important books/lectures/podcasts/research papers slip to the side and not be able to fit them into my schedule. Learning Curves was me trying to discipline myself into actively engaging with my direct community here in Berlin. Specifically within projects that I find interesting or better yet, would love to find out more about. I feel it's a way for me to keep myself informed and engaged in things I give a shit about whilst also hosting hopefully a half decent podcast at the same time :)

AM: Whats next for ya?

Got a lil project rolling out next year under the alias of ‘Neutralised’ which is starting to take shape. We (me and PBL.FYI) will be releasing quite a special EP with Club Qu so keep your eyes peeled for that. In my solo work I've been producing more than ever, got an EP planned next year dropping on a new label from one of my grime producer icons but I won’t say anything more on that just yet. I’m also just about to start a party series - unrar.me is a quarterly online/ IRL party founded by myself (she/her) PBL.FYI (they/ them) and lloydfears (he/ they) exporting mutant strains of global bass, transgressive performance and new media art from the internet and beyond. With a focus on dance, solidarity and militant kindness, unrar.me seeks to surprise it's users and build bridges between disciplines. First one of the series kicks off on 02.12.21. :D

It was created by African and Afro-diasporic associations, as well as by Black-owned businesses. Since then, with the support of over 800 volunteers, the Tubman Network has provided accommodation for more than 1200 refugees from Ukraine.

Every day many black refugees arrive at their door after experiencing racism, extreme prejudices in the legal system, or straight up mistreatment on the street. Tubman Network is there to help organise accommodation, warm meals, 24 hour medical support, evacuate people from Poland and Ukraine, send out legal information from their team of trusted black lawyers, and help integrating people through language courses.

It's been a beautiful 4 years with the noods fam who have helped me feel connected to my UK roots since moving to Berlin 10 years ago. This final send off was accompanied by a stunning guestmix from MM - exploring the moments of consciousness between saying goodbye to one moment and hello to the next, like the passing of night to day 🌙 🌉

Learning Curves is back after a long break, inviting this month @radioplato founders on for a talk on the origins of the station, online community radio and political challenges. Based in the Belerus' capital city of Minsk, the station was launched back in 2018 by journalist, sound engineer and music selectors Aleksandr Korneichuk and Pavel Kirpikov.

Through their social and cultural project of Radio Plato, the station has created a community in Minsk encouraging support for local artists. I invited them on to talk about the growth of the station, the challenges that have stood in the way for their community from the Belerusian Revolution, the side effects of the Russian invasion on Ukraine and the future of both the station and the community of Belerusian artists after fleeing their homeland.

Gaby is a community powerhouse, working together with multiple organisations to open up, not just Berlin’s music scene, but provide access and opportunity to everyone looking to share their story through the mediums of music, radio and journalism. Gaby works with Refuge Worldwide (@refugeworldwide) as their Head of Community Development and Education, she is the co-founder of Open Music Lab(@openmusiclab). OML aims to create safer spaces for music creation, giving opportunities for Berlin's diverse communities to connect at free music workshops.

Yosa Peit (@josa-peit) is the vocalist, producer and founder of Error Music don’t delete! She has sung on tour with Holly Herndon and just released an incredible album on Tax Free Records (@taxfreerec) called Phyton - I love this album! Error Music – don’t delete! is a new experimental sound x tech edu format for girls, trans, inter* and non-binary kids. The project engages students in the idea of E
error-culture and the joy of making 'mistakes'. Through building synths, theremins, live performance with music industry mentors and schooling in the history of female pioneers of computing and electronic music.

We sat down for a discussion one rainy morning in the @thfradio studio to talk through the origins of their projects, how to get involved with creative social engagement work and future prospects.

Learning Curves w/ Bakläxa & Lauren Uba from Climate Action Community Berlin THFRadio 09.03.23

Ecke Records is proud to present a new release series: ‘dECK’. Each release comprises tracks in digital & tape format. The work is from a selected artist with remix(es). The tape run will be a limited edition of 50.

For dECK1, we are joined by Tash Todd aka Bakläxa, with her debut solo outing, ‘Swordfish EP’. The artwork is styled upon everyone’s favourite ‘Bassmate by Probe 2000’ fishing computer from 1984.

"The EP is named after the literal sighting of a Swordfish from a boat in Sicily, with the title track being made on a train trip shortly after, which was the starting point for the whole project. This has been many moons in the making, consisting of tunes of hope and heartache."

Tash Todd (she/her) aka Bassmate 'Bakläxa', is a DJ, producer & radio host who plays a mix of left-field bass, hard drum, grime, dancehall and percussion-driven dance music.

Her 'Learning Curves' show on THFRadio aims to explore projects that are running in and around the city of Berlin that are working in the sectors of social change, activism and cultural awareness.

She has released productions on compilations including Ecke Records’ ‘F.O.E.’ Series and Paloma's ‘Paloma Vs. Virus 005’. Alongside these she has also released a ravey two track EP CiV / VIC on ClubQu as Neutralised - a Cybernetic DJ Duo formed with pbl.fyi.

The release can be best described as being in the middle-ether between three pillars: deconstructed UK Bass, cinematic sound-design pieces & soul-filled pop-driven UK Techno tools.

The signature track ‘Swordfish’ sets the scene with a heavily emotion laden outing. Sensual vocal hits are inter-spliced with a evocative melody line, complemented with movie-scene worthy sound-design distorted bass hits.

Next up is ‘Tool’, a straight up no nonsense club track that has what can be described as a certain cheeky nature. Pokey percussion intersects the mix, a warm bass and viber pads can be found complimenting each other as the tune unfolds.

‘Have Faith’ is up next, washing pads find themselves complemented by a subtle breakbeat that teases the listener before a huge kick switches up the pace. Again we see a warm bass introduced to wrap the listener in a fuzzy blanket as they cross the finish line.

Ecke’s own Xantrax is up next with a remix of ‘Tool’, the pokey percs of the original become crispier, with creepy vocals and an absolutely churning synth line counter-playing against more playful, almost future garage facing, that keep the listener guessing what could come next.

‘SMH’ is a track that can be described as a ‘pop-tool’ - blissed out piano and vocalisms that explore the relationships we have with love & loves lost. A 4/4 kick is introduced to drive the track forward, making this a perfect melancholic tool for a desired moment.

‘Haze’ is the penultimate track on the release, which sees Bakläxa partaking on a deep, sound design enriched journey. Epic pads, with richly effected percs take the listener on a fuzzy adventure into the unknown, with an eerie grating synth line creeping in and out throughout.

To finish, Suno Soniason comes with the ‘Escap Verte Mix’ of ‘SMH’. Vigorous resampling sees Suno present a dub facing half-time 160 adventure across seven and a half minutes. A long stomping intro evolves into 3 different bassline sections, suited for the long-blend selector.

Started in 2015 by @this-is-noia and @itsmetorres , XXIII (reads 23) has created a name both local and online. The global mindset influenced by afro-diasporic sounds and nightclub culture is embedded across all ramifications of this brand - music releases, parties, artists and clothing line.

Bakläxa's 'Learning Curves' show on @thfradio aims to explore projects that are operating in and around the city of Berlin. Working across sectors of social equity, climate activism and awareness, creative cultural education and music industry sustainability. 

Bakläxa has released her first solo EP on @eckerecords and has released singles with @palomabar . @toniandmash are a vocally-driven, neon R&B duo who have a string of independent releases alongside an EP out with Black Diamonds records and @palomabar 's VA digital compilation. Neutralised are a Cybernetic DJ Duo from @bklxa & @peterbasmalord - they dropped a ravey two track EP CiV / VIC on @clubqu in summer of 2021.
