From 2000 through 2008, Ryan Adams fans and Whiskeytown holdovers could enjoy a new album from the Jacksonville, NC native every year (and two in 2005). After a slight break, Adams and his band The Cardinals is back with III/IV. An ambitious double album of previously unreleased material, it features songs captured during the same six month's worth of recording sessions that produced 2007’s winning Easy Tiger. Song moods range from spirited (“Ultraviolet Light”) and reassured (“Happy Birthday”) to wistfully observational (“The Crystal Skull”) and melodic (“Death and Rats”). On “Kisses Start Wars,” Adams and his bandmates demonstrate that their swagger dues are fully paid, while “Icebreaker” may very well get both heads banging and hips swinging.
