The opening of Jose Macabra's composition "London is Dead" (Blacksilk Records, Berlin) is ominously quiet.    The sonic journey begins.    An unsettling, surreal atmosphere is immediately established and the intensity quickly builds into a most intense and richly layered texture.    What screech, what existential howl, is that?  What darknesses, what monsters, lie ahead?   The ability to conjure such a richly populated, complex, and above all dark, sonic world is jawdropping, masterful, sublime, wondrous.

The power to paint such palpable sonic pictures is cinematic.  Yes, "cinematic" is the right word, insofar as words can even describe these astonishing, compelling, challenging and yet ultimately uplifting sounds.    Listening to this music, one is reminded of some of the themes of isolation, dislocation and atomization that permeate T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land": think zombies crossing London bridge, triggering incredulity that death has undone so many. In turn, both Macabra and Eliot conjure spirits from Dante's "Inferno".  One is also reminded of the subsequent tropes of catharsis and redemption, bringing me back to the earlier suggestion that these massively macabre sounds are ultimately celebrations of the prevailing human spirit.    I warmly recommend the richly challenging, darkly epic and utterly compelling sounds of this release to you, in the highest possible terms.

As the selector of the whole era of dance music his sets might be better described as master classes.
Wills built up his reputation fast throughout the world and locally at places such as Ultraschall, Trouw, Golden Pudel, and Concrete. Mick Wills is also a dedicated producer.
Mick is a freak and an avid record collector playing like every night is his last. Again and again and again...

Sariim is the dark lord of the Moscow scene, one of the co-founders of "Rabitza", which remained a bright flash in the memory of the indifferent public, and also the creator of the Temple Of Joy series of experimental practices. His sets embody the raw power of electronics, and this particular recording was made at our Delta festival in Mutabor, on the Medium stage.

For their 3rd outing, Duncan Forbes and his 49North imprint choose to dish up their 4-track EP wares, in a slightly more traditional manner - a Double DF A-Side, with a single remix of each OG on the flip.

First up is 'Omnite' - a proper behemoth of a track, that's anchored around raw and dynamic break beats and an elastic lead that radiates this thick, unearthly magic. Then we have the wintery, acid-lined grooves of 'Silence Runs Through It' - a track that lures us down a more heads-down and hypnotic kind of path.

On the flip-side meanwhile are super hot London collective, Denham Audio - who deliver a delightfully aerial and versicolor interpretation of 'Omnite'; as well as Benjamin Frohlich and his super respectful rework of 'Silence Runs

Through It'... one which essentially sees the PermVac boss dial up the dark and amp up the acid ever so slightly - whilst leaving the heart and soul of the OG - very much intact.

“London Is Dead” is a journey into the realms of London Life these days. Mainly composed using field recordings, processed  vocals and processed acoustic instruments. This 60 minutes piece will take you in to a full cycle of life and death. Most of the ideas to compile this release came together while taking part in a collaboration with Vj London and Disenters’ Gallery called  London Is Dead. Turn the light off,  lay down somewhere comfortable, light up your smoke  and press play.

Jose Macabra is an inimitable Live artist . His presence at any event is sure to raise temperatures and provide a memorable experience. Specialising in “Teknoise”and "Electronic Ritual", expect Jose’s sets to rock a venue to its foundations, whilst always favouring audio innovation over safer territory. His magnetic stage presence and professional attitude ensure repeat bookings that have followed him throughout his career.
A Spanish native, Jose moved to London to study Sound Design at London College Of Communications. It was here he was introduced to the city’s vibrant electronic scene. As a result he’s played at countless underground parties, but his popularity has seen him take his sound “overground” across Europe, touching down in techno institutions. He’s had residencies at legendary parties and is held in high regard by promoters throughout the continent. He has been an integral part of the teams behind nights such as Behind Bars and Antagony.
Deviance is at the heart of everything Jose does. And "everything he does" turns out to be quite a lot. You see Jose is not only extremely talented but also something of a Renaissance man: as well as his storming club sets, he's also a performance artist, sound designer, improvised noise creator, producer and a beguiling solo live act. It’s this interest in performance that’s seen Jose receive commissions for galleries, artist collaborations and more, with his work performed in art establishment venues including The Barbican, Tate Modern , BFI and The Photographer’s Gallery. Works involving Jose’s sound design have toured major festivals in Madrid, Berlin, Athens, Brussels, Milan, Barcelona and other cultural centres.
Collaboration is at the heart of Jose’s work, be it in a straight-forward club setting or a soundtrack commission for theatre, a body-piercing performance or high art concept work. “If you book me, it’s because you like what I do”, he asserts with confidence. “You tell me what to do, but I will do it my way”. Jose has worked with Ernesto Tomasini, Ron Athey, HR. Giger, Sally Mann, Empress Stah, Lydia Lunch, FFIN DANCE Company, UCL, Unite The Union, Katerina Valstur and many more, but it’s with Sammie Joplin that he’s found his longest-standing collaborative partner. Performing as Brood, the due have been known
to challenge audience’s preconceptions with drone sets that sometimes last for hours on end.
Seemingly a mix of contradictions, this fierce, larger-than-life persona betrays a quiet, sensitive soul underneath. His early interest in the Catholic church prompted a lifelong understanding of the power of ritual that has carried over into his music. Jose’s father’s attempts to keep his son from this lifestyle proved flawed; “he told me that if you go to a Catholic school, you will become a priest or a homo. I wanted to be both!” Ultimately, the sense of danger and unpredictability Jose brings to performance is all part of the act. “Everyone’s life is a performance”, muses Jose. “The only thing that isn’t a performance is death.”
