In conversation with Delay Grounds:

- What sort of direction did you take with this mix?

All my mixes tend to get a bit gushy at some point or another so I think for me it’s just a matter of working my way up to that point, trying to hold a certain level of intensity and/or riding the energy in and out of the climax points. I love blending the weird/groovy with the emotional, its almost like trying to confuse people as much as possible for as long as possible while maintaining somewhat coherency and then giving them the relief of a big emotional melody… something like that anyway. 

- What sort of music have you been enjoying recently?

Been bang into Severed Heads recently, a fairly new discovery for me but a seriously amazing band. It like industrial/experimental 80s vibes, a lot of there stuff is quite noisy but when it hits right it hits sooo goooooooood. Check out a song called We Have Come to Bless the House. 

I’m a big fan of Henry Greenleaf too at the moment, really top notch productions and sound design going on in his tracks. Theres one inside this here mix which is particularly excellent called Pan Strings, literally no idea what’s going there its fantastic. 

Big Loraine James fan too right now, her tracks are always quite stripped back but have a really interesting arrangement that holds my attention. The music is always cutting corners, flipping back on itself and rarely does what you think it’s gonna do. 

- What other interests do you have outside of music?

Ontologically speaking everything is pretty interesting I think, the Universe is pretty mental in general and I enjoy having my mind blown … I love Outer Space, History, Art, Food, People, Cycling all that good stuff. I just want to learn as much as possible and continue to grow as an individual and as part of a wider community of artist/producers/humans/carbon based life. It would be reductive for me to specify individual interests because everything is connected, my creative process is a feedback loop between my mind and physical reality. I am influenced and influence in return. Hope that answers your question haha..

- What should we be looking out for from you in the coming months?

I have loads of music coming actually, the pandemic has really slowed the process down which is very annoying but also fine I’m just being impatient as I’m just really excited for everyone to hear it. I have two 5 track EPs coming out over the next 5 months and a few remixes here and there. Follow Tropopause Records and Lapsus Records on social media for updates on all of this!

Detroit and techno are inseparable. And it doesn't get much more Detroit techno than @terrencedixon. A master of minimalist sound design and globally recognised stamp of authenticity, he is one of the Motor City's most prolific artists. His brand of "forward-thinking ghetto electronics" has come on cornerstone labels like Metroplex, Tresor and Rush Hour and is never less than thrilling. His recent Reporting From Detroit album was the latest testament to that, and this week's podcast continues on that theme. 

It is made up of all original material recorded on the West Side of the city but starts in an ambient world of distant stars. After those scene-setting sounds come the signature Dixon drums: deep, pulsing, rubbery. They come and go as you voyage through tortured synth tension, suspensory alien life forms and mysterious electronics. It all makes for a storytelling mix that takes you through a portal and into a whole other dimension.

An immensely talented artist, his production & ideas are unique as much as they are banging. 
He's served up an hour of of club tackle, sticking on the cusp of the UK techno & bass spectrum, this got us in the mood for everything reopening. 

What have you been doing recently? 

Pat: Well.. My most recent EP Upcycling has just come out so that was really nice, it's had a really great response so I'm really happy about that. Life has been on hold which has pushed back release dates for my music which has been annoying, the last year has really thrown me out as well so I am just feeling very grateful to have things like this to look forward to. Off the back of this release I am currently putting a live show together using my modular and a couple of other bits, one or two things in the pipeline as well for this so eyes peeled! It's gonna be a dream come true playing in front of a crowd of mentally mashed up people who just wanna hear massive kick drums. I have a release coming out very soon on Lapsus Records too so watch out for that one! 


The process behind your recent EP Upcycling sounds really interesting! Can you let us know a bit more about it? 

It is a collaborative work. Myself and visual artist/sculpture Liz Naden worked together on it, the music and the visuals are made from the same materials and using the same concept so it wasn't a matter of making music to visuals or vice versa; they are inherently linked and related to one another in the purest way. The idea behind the record is upcycling waste materials into hyper realistic objects in our chosen medium. Club tracks and sculpture. We spent a few months collecting and searching for bits and bobs in skips/bins/charity shops to stockpile at our shared studio space. Then went to work recording the materials and coming up with ideas. It seemed to work really well. Taking a more methodical approach when working on a project has been a revelation for me, planning something out and then working my way through each stage of the process helps me to be more productive. I took the same approach to latest productions and it worked really well again, don't think i'll ever just sit and randomly try and make tracks ever again it's too much of a stab in the dark haha.

My next EP coming out on Lapsus followed a similar methodology, I wanted to write a dance record that was produced like some of my favourite bands so I booked some time at a studio and recorded a load of live drums. Did a load of cool things in the studio too like reamping some of the drum sounds through a guitar amp which was very fun. The other limitation I set myself for this record was that I had to start each idea using the same 2 or 3 sounds, hence the record's title "Genus". The tracks are all genetically related to each other through a common ancestor.  

Where & how did you record the mix and was there an idea behind it? 

Was just recorded at home on my trusty Pioneer XDJ-RX's. Not sure if I had an idea for it, I think in reality I'm not really that good a DJ haha (exhibit A see mix above) but it's all practice you know? I've been working on my timings for blends and trying to get a bit tighter. I am actually really happy with this mix, I think it sounds confident and flows nicely or maybe not I dunno slap it on and you can be the judge.  

What ya been digging n listening to recently?

I recently have been getting well into this band called Squid. It like the band I've been looking for for a long time. There's loads of shouty guitar bands about but it's a struggle to find bands that are using electronics at all let alone in a kind of interesting way. So yeah loads to listen to in there for me. Big Fan.

@delay-grounds could almost be seen to embody the plethora of electronic creativity beaming out of Bristol right now. Ahead of his devastatingly good Lapsus record landing, he’s provided a mix to further demonstrate just how fervent the forever cross-pollinating scene there is at this moment in time. Amongst material from fellow UK upstarts like Metrist, Will Lister and Boulderhead, there’s classics in the form of James Holden’s 10101 and early cuts from Randomer on LIES. There’s futurist club gear in plentiful supply from Karima F and Rhyw, plus a couple of tracks from Delay Ground’s new record for good measure.

Flying through funk, soul, psychedelia, and enchanting soundtracks, Adam Wiltzie commemorates the 30th anniversary of Stars of the Lid’s debut Music for Nitrous Oxide with a mix mirroring the album’s spaciousness and throbbing rawness. The lurching guitars of Wiltzie’s Windsor For The Derby band pace out a textural abyss, allowing for the hushed, gentle twitches of Loscil’s ‘Sticky’ to slowly expand as frost growing on a windowpane, and the fluid melismatic bansuri of Hariprasaf Chaurasia to unravel throughout much of the mix. Smooth organ glides and lush harmonies later lead to a convergence of dextrous, emotive guitar plucks on vAntonio Pinto**’s cinematically swelling ‘Maradona Childhood’.

For Tectonic’s 20th anniversary, label boss Pinch rounds up some heaters from the label alongside their Tectonic Sound compilation. Spinning the whole bass spectrum, Pinch goes from broiling two step to scrubbing grime, with frazzled pulse discharging great energy beside Trim’s idiosyncratic, expressive raps. Lighter moments like the whizzing, zipping, euphoric arpeggios of Peverlist’s ‘Feel Something’ are offset by guttural moody bass, travelling from the club convergence of rattles and tings and brightly resonating metals on Bohdi’s ‘Bellcurve’ to the heavy rotating bass of J. Sparrow’s ‘L33T SP33K’, with slippery dub lasers echoing out.

The versatility of On-U Sound shines in this generous mix from the label crew, “90 minutes of deep cuts, lost classics and non-label Sherwood productions, recorded using two turntables and a stack of original vinyl.” There’s the classic fluttering horns, hot sticky bass and guitars, from the likes of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Dub Syndicate, and then there’s the leftfield grooves of African Head Charge with whirring, rattling, thunking drums and percussion, the drilling industrial soundscape of Mark Stewart & The Maffia. Sitting in between are the psychedelic jazz dub fusions of Playgroup with slick dextrous bassline and ricocheting drums, the reggae inflected synth funk of Shara Nelson, and Little Annie’s sensual spoken word drowning in idiosyncratic desire.

To celebrate the release of the Telepathic Fish compilation, we have a special ‘O Is For Orange 2025’ Bleep Mix from DJ Food.

"A version of this mix first appeared in 2013 at a night to celebrate the release of Boards of Canada’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ LP release. It then morphed into an Audio Video DJ set that I toured around the UK in 2019, playing the Bluedot festival to a packed tent that year. The idea was to thread Boards of Canada’s music with original sample sources, tracks they’d remixed, fan remixes or songs that fitted their sonic blueprint.

I recently resurrected and refined the mix for a gig booking, updating it into a new version. This happened to be a week before I was due to deliver my guest mix to Bleep and it seemed to be too good an opportunity to pass up. I abandoned the mix I was going to deliver and put down the first hour of the ‘Orange’ set including a video mix to go with it. I used stem splitting apps to deconstruct some of the tracks into unique versions before video mixing it all on turntables using Serato then editing the footage in Premiere." - @strictly

Earlier in 2025, Wevie Stonder returned to Skam with their first album in 16 years, and such an occasion requires further celebration, no? Sure Beats Living delivers more of the collective’s signature cheekiness, and this mix for Bleep unravels all of the wildly eclectic sounds and styles that have powered over two decades of iconoclasm.

This is probably the only mix you’ll find that travels from drill and bass to Ecuadorian synth cumbia to 40s jazz. Constant stylistic U-turns are the name of the game, and as the group recontextualise tracks with comedic skits and spoken word pieces, you never know which little sonic nugget is going to be the jumping off point for a completely opposite yet cleverly connected world of sound. Wevie Stonder’s own strange crossing between avant experimentation and punkish irreverence sits between the jangling bass guitar of Gary Le Strange, whose reclusive hikikomori-induced paranoia is delivered in an ironic nasally britpop voice, and the wonky synth funk of Devonwho with lush crisp beats and thrumming jazzy keys.

Bucolic Moog wash and lounge piano tiptoe beneath a Radiophonic Workshop-esque segment testing out the possibilities of synthesisers; “Finally, an example of rhythmic electronic music,” says the posh presenter, introducing a full and proper rinsing with some classic Squarepusher chops. Amen breaks are chucked in the shredder and glued back together with thick jungle bass, then dissipate into Hiroshi Yoshimura’s birdsong bliss. With these disparate tracklist transitions, each track in itself brings together unlikely combinations: further melodrama from Gary Le Strange pairs southern crooning with jaunty harpsichord, bass punches and cascading pianos flow between J Dilla’s slow hip hop hits, and Polibio Mayorga merges accordion and cowbells with the theatrics of expressively vintage synth sounds, brass and electronics trading lines on ‘Muñequita Blanca’.
