Container's productions seem to be so full of sounds and styles it transforms into a uniquely chaotic maelstrom of distorted noise; industrial electronica at first listen, yet loaded with all kinds of intricate detail and idiosyncratic flourishes. As such, @gentledefect's exclusive Bleep mix can’t help but wheel around genre at the highest speed. We begin with a grungy pop banger from Juliana Hatfield before wheeling right into some scum-sucking industrial D&B with Orgonon Pit before making a couple of pit stops at the edges of 1990s radio rock with Dandelion and Stone Temple Pilots and a snarling cut from his latest EP for Richard Fearless' Drone imprint.

Back in March 2018, Container performed  live in one of our nights at Temple Athens.  It was the night that we met for the first time, the majesty of Ren Schofield. His live was sick. 
Usually you find Ren performing behind his machines, making you freak out with his distorted and groovy weird dance electronics. This time he shares an exclusive of selections recording for the Phormix streaming on 15th of November at Mission London. With his latest solo album Quiet Pieces initiating his imprint Soft Echoes, Abul Mogard mixes composers and collaborators that have permeated his discography and inspirations. An impeccable sense of flow and continuity defines these selections, as Mogard says: "I imagined this mix as an atmosphere you could inhabit – a quiet weave of pieces I’m drawn to. It’s a sound collage of old and new music, where tracks meet and overlap gently, carrying you along in a flow while subtly shifting the scenery beneath your feet." From groaning ambience to trilling winds and warm washes of glitching noise comes a frisson of flutes on Stefano Pilia’s ‘CADUX / Plectere’ over an all consuming rumbling bass drone. Mogard highlights vocals in the midsection: the hissing of ‘Anticredos’, Meredith monk’s harmonic conterplay with arrays of pointillist vocal notes, Félicia Atkinson’s spoken word barely rising from its quietude, before brewing a dense buzzing electrical storm of swirling currents and gyres with the final few tracks, the rugged and visceral clockwork of Rafael Anton Irisarri mechanically crumbling as William Basinski’s piano notes eternally intone.

Mark Van Hoen has been enjoying a retrospective moment in his career as he has collected for his albums on Dell’Orso Records, and this mix takes a look back at his many collaborations and bands since the 90s. Showcasing great range, Van Hoen has moved from complex analogue synth blips to snarling, sneering, sizzling shoegaze with ease. Sarah Peacock’s vocals come through bright and clear on Scala’s ‘Words & Thoughts’, while later tracks dive into gently shaking bass buzz with angelic voices swooping and gliding, and pulsating hypnotic slowburns. Soon, bittersweet and explorative sweeps of strings evolve into deep guitar grooves, plaintively tiptoeing synthpop, and thrashing blasts of guitar shreds.

Flying through funk, soul, psychedelia, and enchanting soundtracks, Adam Wiltzie commemorates the 30th anniversary of Stars of the Lid’s debut Music for Nitrous Oxide with a mix mirroring the album’s spaciousness and throbbing rawness. The lurching guitars of Wiltzie’s Windsor For The Derby band pace out a textural abyss, allowing for the hushed, gentle twitches of Loscil’s ‘Sticky’ to slowly expand as frost growing on a windowpane, and the fluid melismatic bansuri of Hariprasaf Chaurasia to unravel throughout much of the mix. Smooth organ glides and lush harmonies later lead to a convergence of dextrous, emotive guitar plucks on vAntonio Pinto**’s cinematically swelling ‘Maradona Childhood’.

“It was great fun while it lasted but unfortunately it only lasted a short time. I am appreciative that after all these decades we can return & acknowledge this time capsule from my past & for the mix i suppose If a song is worth anything, its about the life of the listener....”

For Tectonic’s 20th anniversary, label boss Pinch rounds up some heaters from the label alongside their Tectonic Sound compilation. Spinning the whole bass spectrum, Pinch goes from broiling two step to scrubbing grime, with frazzled pulse discharging great energy beside Trim’s idiosyncratic, expressive raps. Lighter moments like the whizzing, zipping, euphoric arpeggios of Peverlist’s ‘Feel Something’ are offset by guttural moody bass, travelling from the club convergence of rattles and tings and brightly resonating metals on Bohdi’s ‘Bellcurve’ to the heavy rotating bass of J. Sparrow’s ‘L33T SP33K’, with slippery dub lasers echoing out.

The versatility of On-U Sound shines in this generous mix from the label crew, “90 minutes of deep cuts, lost classics and non-label Sherwood productions, recorded using two turntables and a stack of original vinyl.” There’s the classic fluttering horns, hot sticky bass and guitars, from the likes of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Dub Syndicate, and then there’s the leftfield grooves of African Head Charge with whirring, rattling, thunking drums and percussion, the drilling industrial soundscape of Mark Stewart & The Maffia. Sitting in between are the psychedelic jazz dub fusions of Playgroup with slick dextrous bassline and ricocheting drums, the reggae inflected synth funk of Shara Nelson, and Little Annie’s sensual spoken word drowning in idiosyncratic desire.

Bleep Mix #307 - On-U Sound

Sammy Dee needs very little introduction, his 20+ years involvement with Perlon and Get Perlonized events are evidence to his legacy who is an example as such that we have as role model. 

One thing I can talk about extensively however is him as a Dj. Sammy possesses an extremely wide taste in music and a record collection that follows that,  crossing over many genres of music. His ability to adapt to day or night sets, early or late slots and so on  is incredibly precise, as seen here at Sunwaves Festival last May. He was handing over to Dragos Ilici who crossed over to Binh. Please note that this set has intro / middle and ending, a feature that should be standard to us all but surprisingly it is not, hence my emphasis on it, it is a beautiful progression and killer structure. 

Sammy was one of my first bookings for the Toi.Toi.Parties and has been a close friend ever since.  I lost my shit during this set at Sunwaves with him and when finding out it was recorded I pestered him to allow me to release it as it has been on 'repeat' ever since. 

My due respect and thankfulness to this amazing soul and artist I truly admire.
