Disquiet Junto Project 0602: Choice Words
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that strives to express a specific word.

Step 1: Choose a word — either a favorite word, or one at random from a dictionary, a book your reading, or any such source.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music that expresses that word as best you can. Perhaps it communicates an underlying concept, or follows the shape of the word when spoken, or utilizes it as an extremely short lyric. Come up with your own approach, which might be determined by the word, rather than imposed on the word.

I have 2 deadlines next week so have been working a lot of extra hours.  Resigned myself that I probably wasn't going to make it this week, but if I did -- it would have to be FAST.  

This gave me the idea that my word would be "jaunt" -- something light and bouncy and upbeat; a break between work sessions.  I found a bit of time this warm, rainy morning and got a couple short sequences going along these lines...

I felt tired and not at all looking forward to starting work again soon.  I just wanted a bit of peace.  Decided to slow everything down, add a field recording of the outside sounds, and plink about a bit on the piano.  My word is "respite."

Process notes 
- I didn't want to be too specific on this one over and above the words "animated" and "suspension." Leaving lots of space, using high-pass filtering and then contrasting by adding some lower stuff about midway gave me the impression of floating germs - or perhaps nuclear fallout!
- 3 tracks of my voice, originally recorded on 29 Oct 2005, processed with Ableton Live and Puremagnetik's Sphine.
- I'm very slowly working on an album using my voice as source material. This was something initiated with Disquiet 0548 called "Prelude In Preparation." I've since released a track named "Forgot" for a Magpie Pirates compilation called Memory, Reflections under the Yeast With Teeth name too.

Compose a piece of music with three times as much silence as sound.

Once again, I did not exactly follow the assignment. 75% is a lot of silence... but I had fun creating a piece of music in a style different from what I usually do. I will definitely consider incorporating more silence into my future work.

Three To One (disquiet0606)

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0608 (see below for details);
A field recording made on an IC train in the Netherlands (and already used for the track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/aankomst-amsterdam-zuid) was fed into the free transcription tool https://editor.flixier.com/transcribe/. The resulting Spanish text was translated into English. The free text-to-speech tool https://ttsfree.com/ was then used to create the voice pronouncing this text.

The field recording and the voice are accompanied by various instruments improvised to the existing soundscape.

The track-title is one of the translated sentences the AI has thought to recognize from the sounds of the train's interior.

The lyrics created by this magical approach are:

Disquiet Junto Project 0618: Burying the Lede
The Assignment: Turn old news into new music.

I googled for local newspapers from 1973 and found a review of a Pink Floyd concert (Dark Side Of The Moon, which is one of only a small number of CDs I still own) in Munich on Oct 15th 1973 in the daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. I used some middle part of the review, which describes the sound and talks about how Pink Floyd integrates noise in music. I used ttsmp3.com to read it in bad german. I added the speech to a ambience layer that has something of a concert atmo and of something nois-ish, both not well integrated.

The 1973 newspaper I found was this:

Today we might no longer imagine, what kind of ultra hot shit this album must have been at that time.
