[BD009] "Mazen Kerbaj – Walls Will Fall: The 49 Trumpets of Jericho"

A site-specific composition, recorded live and in binaural audio, in the big water reservoir of Berlin-Pankow.

"Walls Will Fall" is a site-specific composition by Mazen Kerbaj which premiered on May 19th 2018. The piece guided 49 Berlin trumpeters through the unique acoustics of a large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, whose winding corridors are reminiscent of a labyrinth as in early depictions of Jericho’s ancient city map: According to the old testament, Jericho’s walls collapsed under the sound of seven trumpeters, blowing their horns for seven days while circling around the city. Far from the religious background of the story, it is the idea of music breaking walls and barriers that is central to this composition. During the performance of "Walls Will Fall" the water reservoir’s natural reverberation becomes the accomplice of every sound and movement. As the musicians walk in the space while performing the seven parts of the composition, an acoustic labyrinth unfolds. 

This performance was mainly captured by the 3D-perspective of a binaural “Kunstkopf KU-100“ microphone. Thus, headphones are recommended for listening.

Hi Folks! I hope you will enjoy listening my set recorded live from vinyl and mixed with a rotary mixer. I was, as always, considering uploading this set to Soundcloud because playing with vinyl and analog gear is somehow I little bit more challenging and mostly im not really satisfied with all transitions ~ ... but playing my favourite records live and see all of you dancing is so fulfilling and sharing these 2h hours full of emotions with you is what's all about. Enjoy, keep dancing, never stop smiling nor raving and in case there are some around, hugging hedgehogs! :D

The Berlin based label “bohemian drips” was founded in 2011 by Alexander Meurer and Fillipp Vingerhoets and is specialized in developing, publishing and staging site-specific compositions in settings with distinctive acoustics. The inclusion of the spatial sound in as a compositional dimension forms the basis of this production process: To capture a three dimensional image, those productions are recorded in binaural audio ("Kunstkopf-Stereophonie"). Following this approach, the label organizes a yearly festival for site-specific music in two old water reservoirs in Berlin, Pankow. Since 2016, "bohemian drips" also releases studio LPs.
