Live from the spectacular Desert Hearts 1 Year Anniversary at La Jolla Indian Reservation in Southern California, this set weaves deep house and tech house over 3 hours plus from 9pm to a little past midnight on the closing night of the festival.

It was an honor to play such an amazing event!  Thanks to the Desert Hearts crew - Kristoff, Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Matt (Marbs), David (Porkchop), Ryan (Deep Jesus), and what must have been 100+ volunteers to make the party all that it was.  I don't think I've ever seen so much art at an event, super impressive feel and vibe around all the art pieces and deco elements present.  Everyone was buzzing about it.  Such excellent organization and signage everywhere, it was really a sight to behold.  Many people were shocked by the high level of production at this event and the only reason I wasn't is that I have been to the 2 prior Desert Hearts events and also collaborated twice with the crew as "Tropical Hearts" - so... I had a feeling about this one :)  My expectations were high, and were still exceeded...

Last I want to thank the DH crew for letting me extend my set in Treavor's absence (his flight from Canada was cancelled) rather than filling in with someone not on the lineup.  I am biased of course but I believe you made the right call :)

Ben Annand Live at Desert Hearts One Year Anniversary, November 10, 2013

The sound of this set I am beginning to play under Alias - Muska Jen - 

The name was inspired by Chia Jen, an artist in Melbourne who is responsible for the decor and painting/artwork of all my stages, as when we are on festival sites working, she selects tracks very much of the kind in the first 1.5 hours of this mix and has inspired me very much over all the years of working with her.

For the latter half, it is primarily from my record collection I never get the chance to play.

For this mix, I wanted to break it up so it was pleasurable, deep and moody, a bit weird at times, hypnotic but then send it home with a little more dancefloor-friendly music. ;  

I am booked at peak time so often that my deeper sound rarely gets explored. This compilation of music is all tracks that I either have had on vinyl for many years, favourites I listen to at home or tracks I like that are a bit too leftfield to play in my regular sets. 

I also wanted to stay away from my original style of fast pace layering and FX trick style mixing. 
This set honours a more traditional style like when I was playing on turntables and old mixers where essentially EQ and Volume fades where all you had. This was important to me to really capture the essence of these age old tracks that are long, hypnotic and minimal. 

This is much more aligned with music and artists I have a deeper sounding connection with. 

This is an unplanned DJ set mixed live with some minor edits later with an additional three tracks added in ableton at the end to show off some original productions in the closing minutes and make the mix come together on time.

I genuinely enjoy the creative freedom that comes with playing music that may not align with the expectations of my current music project. Brad was born a music lover. By high school he was DJing backyard parties in Long Beach and had already become addicted to the latest 12" vinyl releases. His love and passion for cutting edge electronic music has not abated since that time.

Now a veteran of the West Coast rave community since 1992, Brad continues to perform regularly in the U.S. and Canada. His interest in the environment, yoga, and his philosophical nature are conveyed in his musical choices. He can energize any crowd with his seamless mixing, whether in a warehouse, intimate club, or out in the open desert. Brad defies classification by experimenting with a variety of musical genres, often cutting between techno, minimal, tribal, progressive, acid house, and breaks. He blends many intricate soundscapes to create the flow and funkiness that is essential Brad. His eclectic mixes take the listener on a musical journey where time and space seem to disappear. Using the language of music to unite and celebrate the earth and humanity is Brad's goal. Brad has been a resident DJ with Southern California's legendary Moontribe Collective since 1996.
