Sub Signals Vol.2 is a deep dive into underground bass, guided by artist and producer soundcloud.com/gaudi. Featuring predominantly unreleased originals and versions by some of the biggest names in the worldwide dub collective, Sub Signals Vol.2 intricately combines analogue elements with digital grooves to stunning effect. 

Much more than just a compilation, the Sub Signals series is a celebration of the evolution of the sound of dub, from its original roots in reggae to its fusion with a much wider spectrum of sounds and influences. Gaudi curated the first volume back in 2006 for the cult Canadian label Interchill, sourcing tracks and dubs from High Tone, Zion Train, Manasseh, Almamegretta, Noiseshaper, Creation Rebel, Greg Hunter, Bill Laswell’s Dubadelic and more.

15 years on, Gaudi has created the second volume, blending contributions by established reggae names Steel Pulse, Dennis Bovell and African Head Charge with next generation dub producers Alpha Steppa, Radikal Guru and Paolo Baldini Dubfiles, headline acts Groove Armada, Dub FX and The Orb with underground artists Deadbeat, Pitch Black and SUBSET, to create a seamless 75 minute mix.

“With Volume 2, I wanted to create a deep vibrational experience by shaping an aural trajectory that encompassed the many aspects of dub and its related sub-frequencies. To achieve my goal, I reached out to the artists I regularly work with to ask for contributions, in some cases digging in their archives to find what I was looking for. As the project developed, it became like a soundtrack for a non-existent black and white film that allows the listener to make their own movie based on the soundscape, frequencies and emotions within the sound-bed I designed.”

As a solo artist, Gaudi has recorded over 20 albums, while as a producer he has hundreds of productions under his belt. He has worked with legends of the reggae and electronic music worlds including Lee "Scratch" Perry, Horace Andy, Dub Pistols, Hollie Cook, Youth, Mad Professor, Prince Fatty, Lamb, Trentemøller and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Dedicated to the sound of dub in its many forms, Gaudi’s latest excursion of his Sub Signals series is pure bass therapy, designed to excite your eardrums and worry your woofers.

"Above all else, what I love about DJing is the endless hunt for incredible and unique music that I can share with others. I'm an introvert by nature, I don't really like being in crowds and I tend to overanalyse everything. What brings me peace is the music itself. 

I've spent more than half of my life listening to all types of electronic music. It's a huge part of my life and through the love of music I've met most of my best friends and my beautiful dance floor warrior princess (now my wife). 

I love techno. I always have and always will. This however is only one piece of the puzzle. Outside of DJing clubs and festivals you'll find me listening to a huge range of sounds and styles. An unquenchable thirst for sonic brilliance. 

One style in particular is that which blurs the lines between electronica, modern classical, ambient and downtempo. Music that I can listen to through headphones to turn the volume on the rest of the world down. My own microcosmos in a fast-paced world.

Rainbow Serpent Festival is one of my favourite places on earth. It revives me each year mentally and musically. Having the opportunity to contribute music alongside my heroes is a huge honour and one I do not take lightly. 

This set took months to compile and saw me dive deep into the archives for tunes that have inspired me over the past two decades. It's a representation of all that I love about music.

With this set and the time it was played, I wanted people to wake up to warm ambient and soft keys, before building to glitchy electronica and broken beats that would revitalise sore heads. As the morning sun bathed the festival grounds, smiling faces filled the dance floor.

"I’ve titled this mix “Into the Wild” for a few reasons. Firstly, I was inspired by the film of the same name. It’s the story of a young man who attempts to leave behind everything that he knew and reject what society expected from him, only to realise that life is about the connections you make with people. 

Throughout I’ve included samples from the film which helps transition between chapters / sections of the mix. I also see ‘Into the Wild’ as a metaphor for launching oneself into the unknown and accepting the challenges that lie ahead. Ultimately this is what this set means to me as this resonates with me with where I am with my life right now. 

Rather than a linear journey that builds to a crescendo like I traditionally would create, I attempted to let the set ebb and flow, meandering through a variety of sounds and feelings. Hopefully you enjoy the journey as much as I did."

"Putting together this set was an immensely cathartic experience and helped me deal with some grief I'd been going through at the time. In some ways I feel this reflects the journey it took. 

A few key pieces of music were specifically chosen to convey the sense of sadness one might experience when knowing they have to say goodbye to a loved one. 

Likewise, there are a few that I hope convey the sense of happiness one might experience after realising that they were simply lucky enough to have that loved one in their life to begin with.

With that said I'd like to dedicate this to my Godmother, Antoinette <3 ".

About the DJ...
Narel (Nick Simmons) was introduced to electronic music from a very young age.  As a teen he began experimenting with synthesizers, samplers, decks and mixers which led to DJ performances from the late 90’s and his signing his first releases to Bonzai Records in 2009.  Narel tunes are drenched in atmosphere, effects and melodies with a distinct old skool vibe.  As a passionate advocate of underground dance music, clichés are not found and trends are not followed in Narel tunes.  What you will find is a blend of progressive trance, progressive house, trance, progressive breaks, melodic techno, ambient & downtempo.  Narel is a multi genre DJ ranging from progressive house/trance/melodic techno sets to completely ambient.

About the mix...
Narel’s mix for Breathe showcases a collection of atmospheric, melodic and often melancholy tracks.  The mix was designed to ebb and flow, to engage you and then let you drift away until it claims you again.  It spans many years and genres from early 90’s Caustic Window to recent psybient, sparse ambient soundscapes with spoken word vocals and lo fi dub techno.  It was mixed live by Narel with additional layers and production added in the studio to create an immersive experience.

About the artist:
Rick Inserra has been mixing up tunes since the late 90s. Influenced by older siblings’ music tastes, he would take any opportunity to get some time on the equipment and play around.  Since then, the musical journey has taken him through the Melbourne underground scene, playing in some of Melboourne’s most iconic dance venues, supporting some of the most influential Local and International DJs in the scene.  Showcasing a variety of dark Prog and Techno, to deep house and funky house, Rick definitely keeps an open mind and ear when it comes to music selection.  But there has always been a love for the ambience of electronica and chill, and the calm of afterhours and early mornings. 

About the mix:
"Some of my all-time favourite compilations are from the Global Underground series, when it comes to chilling out I always get into their Afterhours mixes, and also Nick Warren’s Reykjavik disc 1 was an early standout and influence for me.  

During the long hours online looking for fresh dance music, I sometimes come across ambient, beatless music that would instantly calm me.  I would slowly collect these, and others, until I have enough to put a set together.  So far there are 3 ‘Depth Perception’ mixes in my series.

This set I tried to push the boundaries of chill and build this up to almost make you want to get up and dance in the end, but not quite.  The gathering of tunes took almost 12 months to get together, and with this very select collection, putting the mix together was pure fun.  

I really hope you all enjoy the journey of this mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together".

We're proud to follow up our “Third Light” album with a companion selection of remixes entitled “The Light Within”, with the remixers hailing from across the globe *and* the bass music spectrum. The resultant ten-track collection is playful, spiritual and sensory, with upbeat tempos and slithering effects woven deep into the rhythmic pulses and dark undercurrents of our original tracks.

Bookended by uptempo versions of “Daylight Wasting” from International Observer and Berlin bassheads qnp, “The Light Within” features contemporary bass cuts from Portland’s Bodie and Christchurch’s Akcept, downtempo grooves by Argentinian dubsalon and South Korean mcthfg, dancefloor dubs from Mexico’s Tor.Ma in Dub and Brisbanite SUBSET, as well as drum and bass by Wellingtonian Zuke and the legendary UK producer Adrian Sherwood.

Contemplative but cheerful, either way, as “A Doubtful Sound” states, ‘The rhythm IS gonna get ya!’
