BlindSquare is primarily an orientation tool. It uses Foursquare and OpenStreetMap to give you information about your environment when outdoors, or Bluetooth beacons if they have been installed to help you navigate indoors. As the primary focus is providing information about the environment, it is best paired with another GPS app such as Google or Apple Maps which can provide turn-by-turn directions that supplement the information. The app is very powerful and customizable, allowing you to choose exactly how much information you would like to receive as well as how that information is conveyed.

Google Lookout is very similar to Seeing AI for iOS. The app allows someone who is blind or visually impaired to use the camera on an Android device to get information about the world. The app currently supports 5 modes. These are food labels, text, document, explore, and currency.

Jabberwocky uses FaceID technology to turn the latest generation of iPhones and iPads into communication devices. The app is laid out as a QWERTY keyboard with word prediction and message bar where you write the message. The FaceID tracks your face (think of your nose as the pointer), then you select by resting, or dwelling, on a key. The dwell time is adjustable and there is a blank space to allow you to “rest” while scanning with your eyes for the next key or word. You can also “draw” words by quickly “dragging” the cursor through all the letters of the word, similar to the “draw” feature on some phone keyboards.

VoiceDream Scanner is an iOS app that can take pictures and perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on those images. After doing this, the text can be read, discarded, or saved. This app comes from the same developer who made the fantastic VoiceDream Reader. While it is not necessary to own Reader to use Scanner, they work extremely well together. You can even scan directly from Reader using Scanner.

Venmo is an app used to send, spend, and receive money. Venmo can be linked with a users bank, debit card, or credit card, to access funds. Money can be send and requested to and from another Venmo user without fees. This app is free and offers some in-app purchases. This is a digital wallet which allows users to quickly move money to other users.

Doctor on Demand is a virtual visit with a team of healthcare providers, some of them might even be local to your area. This service gives you access to medical doctors practically everyday of the year with one set fee for medical visits. The cost is a similar to a standard copay, but they may take your insurance as well.

The OurHome app is a digital family chore chart to help parents and caregivers manage household tasks. Based around a customized ‘to do’ list, the app guides building a plan for chore assignments, communication of task completion, and a point-based reward system.

Talking Typer is an iOS version of the Talking Typer Windows program made by The American Printing House for the Blind. The app is a typing tool that can help people learn to type on a computer keyboard. The program includes 35 typing lessons with the possibility to create new lessons or edit existing ones. Lessons can be tailored to an individual’s specific requirements or needs. Before opening and using Talking Typer, it is recommended to connect a Bluetooth keyboard to the iOS device. The app works with the touchscreen keyboard, but a hardware keyboard will make it easier to use. It also makes much more sense than a software keyboard, considering the program is designed to teach one how to better utilize a hardware keyboard.

Speech Sound Visualized is an app that can be used by a Speech Language Pathologist to help teach children or adults how to produce speech sounds. The app presents a video x-ray of the mouth as a sound is produced. The therapist can use the video to show the client how to move each articulator to produce a sound correctly.

The app is capable of identifying over 10,000 plant species with an accuracy of 98%, better than most human experts. PictureThis is fun and educational for users of all ages and abilities. The app is available for both Apple and Android.

Easy Scroll app for Android devices helps make scrolling and swiping much easier for Android users who find it difficult to swipe or scroll. After downloading this free app, the user can customize a 'scrolling' bar on the screen. The 'scrolling bar' consists of buttons with arrows you push for up/down/left/right/pause/etc, similar to what you see on a tv remote. Placement of the 'scrolling bar' is always on top of the screen you are on and can be easily moved around the screen so it does not get in the way of your view. Customizing goes even farther as you can program your buttons to the speed that works best for the user. You can also add additional buttons.
