Prof. Douglas Hannah, a distinguished researcher and Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University, shares valuable insights from his research on “Beyond Prototypes: Rethinking Innovation in Complex Ecosystems.”

Prof. Hannah explores how innovation extends beyond the development of initial prototypes to thrive in complex ecosystems. He examines the challenges firms face in scaling innovations, coordinating across industries, and navigating uncertainty. Through case studies and research-driven insights, Prof. Hannah highlights strategies for managing interdependencies, fostering collaboration, and driving long-term success in dynamic markets.

He studies strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship in dynamic and ambiguous settings like cleantech, digital health, and pandemic-era supply chains and conducted his doctoral research at the Stanford Technology Ventures Program in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University. He later worked at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He draws on and contributes to research and theory in economics, sociology, and psychology, employing a variety of research methods, including inductive field research and formal modeling.

Dr. Douglas Hannah holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University.
