This entry is for someone who I’m very close with who is a long way from home and waking up in unfamiliar surroundings. I hope this playful little track offers a moment of escapism when waking up & adds a lightness to their day.

>Step 1: You are going to record a piece of music intended for someone to listen to almost immediately upon waking up. Think about your mornings, and what a more optimal morning might entail.

> Step 2: Consider a scenario in which someone wakes up and, rather than look at their work or check the news, they take a period of time to just get centered. Think about how long you might want this to take, say three minutes, or five minutes, or twenty minutes.

Early Bird (disquiet0684)

This week, members of the Disquiet Junto were invited to make a piece of music intended for listening to while awakening from sleep. My first thought was, "I'm going to try really hard to not make this creepy." Was I successful?

The title is an anagram of my full name— how cool is that? My composition is, as Bjork might say, not only musical but scientifical. I'm using binaural mixing to create a 6Hz oscillation that slowly transitions from theta waves to alpha waves, providing neural feedback that guides the listener from a  meditative state to a calmly wakeful one. Note that you can only experience this effect using headphones.

This track features many layers of evolving pads, gentle ebow guitar, and integrated field recordings. You might be surprised at which ones are which. The vocals are organic. 

Please tell me it's not creepy.

For this week’s assignment I wanted to capture not only the tranquility of waking up but also the anxiety. The track’s volume builds – reflecting one’s journey back into consciousness – and there’s a presence of dissonance and tension that is perhaps the anxiety of facing another day (carryover stress from the day before). However, within that dissonance you can hear a steady determination break through – this is the individual taking control of their power, their peace – and then the tension dissipates, the person fully awake and also empowered. Their phone alarm goes off at the end, gently. As I was writing this on my akai mpk mini, the sun was rising over New York City and gleaming through the windows of my Jersey City apartment — almost in sync with the rising tension of the keys. I felt like the sun and I were in tune with one another – that I was playing with the sun.

My first junto project- disquiet0698. Adding the 2nd part of a trio (right channel), to Alan Blip's- B-Drone starter (left channel) .  
You are hearing some shortwave recording of military weather reports, and what is (allegedly) a Russian diplomatic service transmission (time-stretched), bad violin playing and the sound of wind in the trees of my garden. Kinda concerned I've packed too much in here, but hope there's space for someone to add something more in part 3. It's been fun- thanks Alan Blip & Junto crew for the provocation :)

The all-synth background is great. I thought the contrast between those synth tracks and a warm, acoustic tone could be interesting, so I improvised a lead part on tenor ukulele. I also added an infra bass drone playing the tonic, and used a little software I’m beta testing that generates sound from a text prompt using some kind of AI (can’t say more here, but it’s fun for drones!).
It's like a dark, abstract recitativo, hope you like it.

I choose Krakenkrafts (Andreas Winterer) 2nd part of this assignment trio (and used the panned version so both are each one one side https://on.soundcloud.com/6MYaZFnudYJbPVks7) as I like the jazz feel he added to the Meccaniche-del-suono – (Marco Marongiu)  First-tongue-ram-disquiet0697https://soundcloud.com/meccaniche-del-suono/first-tongue-ram-disquiet0697?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0697. Seemed like it was a little uncertain in its tonal center yet firmly good in Bmin. And it felt like a good match/opportunity to add piano. I did one take improvised overdub centered as requested and felt it made a nice glue for the 2 halves. Thank you Marco & Andreas for a lovely piece to seal.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
