Vanishing Patient (tegan) est une DJ dysfonctionnelle dont la sélection de tracks exprime principalement le chaos de son propre cerveau, et son addiction sidérée aux musiques en mouvement.

Elle espère que ses dj sets pourront proposer un endroit où trouver un répit - ou une rupture - à travers l’expérience abrasive et polyrhythmée de musiques expérimentales animées par toute forme de percussion : hard drum, amapiano, baile, dembow, ainsi que tout ce qui s’entrecroise actuellement en Angleterre ; une île banale dont elle est originaire, mais qui est parfois sauvée par la richesse de son expérience de la musique.

Elle a une émission mensuelle sur @lylradio pour des sets clubs, et co-anime le projet @channelhole sur @threadsradio, qui passe de la musique expérimentale de toute sorte , organisant également des soirées de soutien sous ce même nom. Elle est passée sur NTS, Refuge Worldwide, et d’autres radios, et a d’autres passages sur Kiosk Radio et NTS prévus. When I called this piece “A Large House” it was a title I thought up in a hurry, for no specific reason, and it just seemed to fit. In retrospect, it fits because this piece more than any other made me feel like an architect. I was writing something that was a large space, open, but perhaps with huge pillars holding it up. The piece is stationary, it doesn’t move, it’s grounded in one place, and maybe it even resonates like something with a lofty ceiling. As for any other connection between this piece and a large house, you are welcome to make it as you like.

Last year we invited flutist, composer and educator Nicole Mitchell to make her London debut at OTO. Though originally lined up to play with semi frequent collaborator Joelle Leandre, Joelle had to pull out at the last minute. Instead, we asked Mark Sanders if he would like to play. Having never met before, Mark’s restrained approach to the kit, with skipping brushes on toms and light touches to a ride, a bell or wooden blocks gives remarkable space and air to Mitchell’s unique synthesis of flute and voice. Together they create  a strikingly sparse and minimal sound, but one which is no less full of joyous melodic hooks and grooves reminiscent of a stripped back Art Ensemble.

From Another Mother launches a series of unique mixes presenting an idiosyncratic storyline deriving from each guest

The first mix is DJ Marcelle's Secret Recipe - a one hour shimmering of punk attitude, loco drum lines, deep basses and all sorts of tribal vs metallic things banging including opera hints, zips, haunting alarms and rotary phone rings, serving us a taste of her distinctive artfulness in the blending process

'Ray' is Ashley Paul's bright, sensual return to Slip: a lifting, delighting suite of yearning winds, loose beats, and cocooning, humid bass coming together and falling apart as songs. 

The LP airs Paul's new trio, alongside bass clarinettist Yoni Silver and bassist Otto Willberg, who fatten out and shine light on her singularly intimate, multi-instrumental with mystery and grace. 2018's 'Lost In Shadows' wrote into the bewildering ecstasy of recent motherhood with a tingling resolve. On 'Ray' - recorded remotely during lockdown - Paul's deliciously hesitant songcraft is an outpouring and an anchor in freshly tumultuous times. 

Says Ashley:

"Over the past six months I’ve found myself needing music in a new way, a way of coping. I found again albums I had loved in the past, full of melody and humour, to cancel out the barrage of terrible news happening outside. I think this album is a reflection of that need. There is the playfulness of spending my days with our four year old, and the hours spent tending to plants in the garden and examining bugs, and also the pain of missing family and friends. It’s hard for me to fully comprehend the breadth of emotion I've felt recently but maybe this is a small window.
The trio idea had been formulating in my head for months, and then lockdown happened. At first I was very disappointed and thought I'd be waiting forever to finally make it a reality, but time passed. I started working on a new album and could only hear it with these guys. We recorded remotely. I sent material in a variety of ways; written, aurally and verbal ideas/queues, sometimes with just a shell of a track and other times nearly completed. I wanted all our voices to be present, and to allow freedom in the parts for interpretation and improvisation. Maybe because we’ve all worked together in various situations and are friends, I’m not sure, but it came together naturally, magically and quickly."

Cafe OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music almost seven nights a week. 

OTOROKU is part of OTOProjects - a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that has been set up to manage the programme at Café Oto. Any profits from OTOROKU are put back into supporting what we do and will help us to continue programming the best musicians and performers from all over the world.
