This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features @deforrest-brown-jr, a writer and cultural theorist based in New York, who also makes music under the name @speakermusic.

In 2022, Brown Junior released his first book “Assembling a Black Counter Culture”, which in his own words, is a “historical science-fiction book about Black contributions to the electronic music industry.”

The book opens with a map from the album “The Quest”, by legendary Detroit electronic duo @drexciyaofficial, composed of James Stinson and Gerald Donald – who are the primary focus of this month episode’s mix. 

Created by Brown Jr., “The Myth of Drexciya” is a mix which features a sprawling selection of Drexciya’s discography from 1991 to 2002, revealing the “sonic fiction of the underwater civilizations’ aquatic invasion of the surface world.” 

The mix is accompanied by an interview with Brown Jr., who discusses collaborating with Detroit visual artist Abdul Qadim Haqq on his recent book, the influence that Drexciya have had on his work, and the best scenarios to enjoy their music in. Read the talk at www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music.

This particular time we have Prague-based magician Sasha Nevolin offering up a beautiful mixed bag of pure audible nourishment. Sasha delivers a pinball machine approach to an organised pandemonium-esque operation, bouncing around between all states of being with an overarching deep sense of joy. This month’s show features the Belgian record label and music festival @meakusma, which began in 2004 as a series of events across Brussels and the small eastern Belgium city Eupen, before evolving into a record label in 2008, and a festival in 2016, aiming to celebrate the unclassifiable, through music, installations, and lectures.
 
Since the label’s inception, Meakusma has continued to release a selection of records which defy genre and categorization, from artists such as Madteo, Viola Klein, Tomaga, Charlemagne Palestine, Don’t DJ, Lord Tang, Sam Gendel, or Pretty Sneaky.
 
For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Meakusma’s founders created a sprawling mix exploring the label’s back catalogs, abstract sounds by Roger 23, minimal techno from Detroit’s Terrence Dixon, and twisted electronics by Berlin’s Peter Kock. Love Injection is happy to welcome Omo Igi (Olu), a Brooklyn native whose love of music is apparent whether he’s on the bass or behind the decks. He’s played in bands such as Conclave and Standing on the Corner and supported/collaborated with artists such as MIKE, Caleb Giles, and even Peter Zummo. In 2020 he released an EP, ‘Prone 2’, a sound splatter of heavily sampled house, techno, and electronica that’s as varied and far reaching as his DJ sets. Tune in expecting anything from Zamrock Rock all the way to Dub Techno. If you listen closely you can hear all the influences of growing up in the inner city and spending all your free time browsing record shops!
