Sixth lecture of the Aula Arabe Universitaria 4 programme, by Adam Hanieh, professor at the University of Exeter.

The Gulf states remain a critical zone of global oil production and exports, despite some recent diversification in their economies. For this reason, Adam Hanieh`s lecture, Professor of Political Economy and Global Development at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, will survey the new trajectories of the Gulf’s oil in global capitalism, focusing on the deepening interdependencies that are emerging between the Gulf states and East Asia in both crude oil exports, and crucially, downstream sectors such as petrochemicals.

The lecture will map these interdependencies, including the new forms of corporate power that are consolidating between the two regions, and it will also ask what these developments might mean for the political economy of the Gulf states and their traditionally strong alliances with the US and Western Europe. Finally, the lecture will explore the implications of these new inter-regional linkages for the struggle against an oil-centred global economy.

Casa Arabe is organising this sixth session of the Aula Arabe Universitaria 4 programme in collaboration with the UAM's Master's Degree in International Relations and African Studies and the Master's Degree in Political Science and Public Affairs at Saint Louis University (Madrid Campus). Representing those university programs, the session will count with the participation of Marta Íñiguez, Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and Barah Mikail, Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations Programme at Saint Louis University – Madrid Campus. Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe's Education and Economics Coordinator, will moderate the lecture.

Adam Hanieh is Professor of Political Economy and Global Development at the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His current research focuses on issues of political economy, oil, and capitalism in the Middle East. His most recent book is Money, Markets, and Monarchies: The Gulf Cooperation Council and the Political Economy of the Contemporary Middle East (Cambridge University Press, 2018), which won the 2019 British International Studies Association, International Political Economy Group Book Prize.

AAU 4.6. The Gulf States and East Asia: Rethinking Middle East Oil in the Global Economy

To mark the occasion of the opening of the exhibition “Los viajes del agua,” artist Sara Kamalvand will be taking part in a round table discussion in Madrid, where she will be presenting her research process and delving into archeological features of the water which travels through Madrid.  

Water is the element closest to us, lying at the origin of all cities. Waterways forms an underground network of water which has been abandoned, going back to the very founding of Madrid as a city by Emir Mohamed of Cordoba in the ninth century. This system was used for over one thousand years before being discarded upon the advent of the industrial revolution. The technique belongs to the water heritage coming from ancient Persia, known as qanat, whose infrastructure takes advantage of underground aquifers instead of surface water, giving rise to the civilization of hidden waters. Muslim expansion throughout the Mediterranean basin was made possible in part by the qanat, which gave rise to garden ecologies in arid landscapes and prospered through a horticultural economy.

With his interpretation of these invisible ruins, Kamalvand undertakes the reconquest of a forgotten heritage and deciphers this urban palimpsest, in search of the indestructible traces of societies that have succeeded each other in time and will continue to do so. The exhibition analyzes this infrastructure in Madrid, not only from a technical perspective, but also by examining the cultural legacy from the origin of the network, when the Persian garden was invented, to its counterpart in Renaissance Spain. Madrid’s qanats gave rise to gardens and fed into public fountains for eight centuries before being abandoned. Today, at a time when Madrid is suffering water shortages, this infrastructure continues to passively and uninterruptedly irrigate underground passageways. In addition to the well known water journeys that supplied the Villa de Madrid, these same systems also existed in many towns within our region, with examples of lesser importance, but which did in most cases supply the only drinking fountain in the place in question.

This round table will address the research process by artist Sara Kamalvand and will delve deep into archeological aspects of the water pathways in Madrid. The event will include attendance by the artist, archeologist Mónica Major and the art director at the Casa de Velázquez, Claude Bussac. Sara Kamalvand is an architect and artist with a degree from the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. In 2012 she founded HydroCity, a Canada-based research platform aimed at developing work about qanat, an abandoned ancestral Iranian irrigation infrastructure, about which she has held workshops, conferences, exhibitions and publications. Her work questions the reorientation of urban protocols and alternative scenarios for infrastructure, resources and public space. Her work has been exhibited at the Nicolas Michelin Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran and the Kunstfort in Amsterdam. In 2018, she was selected by Manifesta 12 to work on the qanats in Palermo.

Sara Kamalvand has been a guest lecturer at the École Spéciale d’Architecture from 2015 to 2018 and has taught at the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage de Versailles. Sara Kamalvand’s project in Madrid, for which she has been awarded an artistic residency by the Casa de Velázquez, is based on the very origins of the city around water, through the interpretation of an age-old, invisible underground network.

Waterways: From garden to cosmos (FRENCH)

Con motivo de la inauguración de la exposición "Los viajes del agua", la artista Sara Kamalvand participaen una mesa redonda en la que expondrá su proceso de investigación y ahondará en aspectos arqueológicos de los viajes del agua de Madrid.   

El agua es el elemento más cercano a nosotros, el origen de todas las ciudades. Los viajes del agua son una red de agua subterránea y abandonada que se remonta a la fundación misma de Madrid por el emir Mohamed de Córdoba en el siglo IX.  Este sistema se utilizó durante más de mil años antes de ser descartado con la llegada de la revolución industrial. La técnica pertenece al patrimonio hidráulico procedente de la antigua Persia conocido como qanat, cuya infraestructura aprovecha acuíferos en lugar del agua superficial, dando lugar a la civilización de las aguas ocultas. La expansión musulmana por la cuenca mediterránea fue en parte posible gracias a los qanat, que dieron pie a ecologías ajardinadas en paisajes áridos y prosperaron gracias a una economía hortícola. Con su interpretación de estas ruinas invisibles, Kamalvand emprende la reconquista de un patrimonio olvidado y descifra este palimpsesto urbano, en busca de las huellas indestructibles de sociedades que se han sucedido en el tiempo y que seguirán haciéndolo.  

La exposición analiza esta infraestructura en Madrid, no solo desde el punto de vista técnico, sino también examinando el legado cultural desde el origen de la red, cuando el jardín persa fue inventado, hasta su contraparte en la España renacentista. Los qanats de Madrid dieron lugar al nacimiento de jardines y alimentaron las fuentes públicas durante ocho siglos antes de ser abandonados. Hoy, cuando Madrid sufre escasez de agua, esta infraestructura sigue irrigando las vías subterráneas de manera pasiva e ininterrumpida. Además de los conocidos viajes de agua que surtieron a la Villa de Madrid, estos mismos sistemas se reprodujeron en las numerosas poblaciones de nuestra Comunidad, ejemplos de menos entidad, pero que surtirían, en la mayoría de los casos, a la única fuente potable que hubiera en la localidad.   

 La mesa redonda abordará el proceso de investigación de la artista Sara Kamalvand y ahondará en aspectos arqueológicos de los viajes del agua de Madrid. El acto contará con la presencia de la artista, la arqueóloga Mónica Major y la directora artística de Casa de Velázquez, Claude Bussac. Presenta Karim Hauser, coordinador de Programas Culturales de Casa Árabe.

 Sara Kamalvand es arquitecta y artista, licenciada por la École Spéciale d’Architecture de París. Los viajes del agua: del jardín a lo cósmico

Tras el levantamiento popular que condujo al derrocamiento del presidente Omar al-Bashir en 2019, Jartum, la capital sudanesa, vio multiplicarse el número de galerías que promocionaban la obra de artistas sudaneses, y el arte pop-up proliferó por todo el país. Los asombrosos murales de la revolución fueron parte de una efímera efervescencia que terminó amargamente con el inicio de otra guerra, el 15 de abril de 2023. Un conflicto que, hasta la fecha, ha provocado el desplazamiento masivo y la incertidumbre de más de 10,5 millones de sudaneses.

"Agitación en el Nilo" hace honor a su nombre. Las obras reunidas en esta exposición abandonaron Sudán días antes de la actual turbulencia y han encontrado refugio en el sur de Europa, Lisboa primero y ahora Madrid. La muestra representa un esfuerzo por afirmar que, incluso cuando se arrancan vidas y hogares a una comunidad, la voz y la expresión colectivas de un pueblo no pueden silenciarse.

El desconocimiento de lo que ocurre en este singular país, nación de los dos Nilos, representa una oportunidad para realizar un viaje por el arte moderno y contemporáneo a través de la obra de once artistas sudaneses, la mayoría procedentes de Jartum.  

La mesa redonda organizada por Casa Árabe previa a la inauguración de la exposición, contará con la presencia de tres de los artistas: Rashid Diab, Eltayeb Dawelbait, Bakri Moaz, acompañados por uno de los comisarios Rahiem Shadad, responsable de la selección en colaboración con el portugués António Pinto Ribeiro. Agitación en el Nilo: la revolución artística sudanesa

To mark the official opening of the exhibition “Disturbance in the Nile: Modern and contemporary art from Sudan,” the exhibition’s curator and three of the artists will be taking part in a round table discussion. 

After the popular uprising that led to the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019, the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, experienced a large increase in the number of galleries promoting the work of Sudanese artists, and pop-up art became widespread throughout the country. The amazing murals created during the revolution formed part of a short-lived boom which ended bitterly with the outbreak of another war on April 15, 2023. Up to now, that conflict has resulted in mass displacement and uncertainty for more than 10.5 million people in Sudan.

“Disturbance in the Nile” lives up to its name. The works brought together in this exhibition were taken out of Sudan days before the current upheaval and have found refuge in southern Europe, initially in Lisbon and now in Madrid. The exhibition represents an effort to affirm that, even when lives and homes are torn away from a community, the people’s collective voice and expression cannot be silenced.

The lack of knowledge about what is occurring in this unique country, the “nation of the two Niles,” provides an opportunity to go on a journey through modern and contemporary art by viewing the work of eleven Sudanese artists, most from Khartoum.

The round table discussion organized by Casa Árabe prior to the official opening event for the exhibition, will be attended by three of the artists: Rashid Diab, Eltayeb Dawelbait and Bakri Moaz, along with one of the curators, Rahiem Shadad, who was responsible for selecting the works, in collaboration with António Pinto Ribeiro of Portugal. Disturbance in the Nile: Sudan’s artistic revolution (ARABIC)

Meet Medusa on Acid - 10/04/2024

Casa Árabe proyecta en su sede de Madrid el tráiler del documental "Ziryab y la huella árabe en España", de Alan Cantos, dedicado a los personajes que, como Ziryab, influyeron en la música y la cultura desde la Córdoba andalusí hasta nuestros días. Habrá además un coloquio con Eduardo Manzano y un recital de laúd a cargo de Hames Bitar. 

Abu l-Hasan Ali ibn Nafi`​ fue un poeta, gastrónomo, músico y cantante musulmán. Más conocido con el apodo de Ziryab ("mirlo", en árabe), emulando así al probable color de su piel y a la voz melodiosa de este ave, recibió una sólida formación literaria y científica, especialmente en geografía y astronomía, y aprendió música en Bagdad con el célebre cantor Ishaq Ibn Ibrahim al-Mawsilī (767-850), durante el califato de Harun al-Rashid (786-808). 

Nacido en Mosul, Iraq, y fallecido en Córdoba, su historia es la de los orígenes de nuestra cultura. Durante el siglo IX llega al califato de Córdoba este personaje irrepetible que revoluciona la música, el canto, la percusión, las costumbres y la gastronomía existentes. El documental de Alan Cantos pretende acompañar el periplo de Ziryab desde Bagdad a Córdoba en el espacio y en el tiempo, de la mano de músicos, artistas y chefs.

Mediante esta exploración audiovisual, Alan Cantos sugiere que el conocimiento de esta fascinante historia puede servir como antídoto contra la xenofobia y motor de la tolerancia. Posterior a la presentación del tráiler del documental, el acto contará con la participación de Eduardo Manzano, quien contextualizará la contribución de Ziryab en la historia de España y y el mundo. El laudista Hames Bitar acompañará musicalmente el acto. Presenta el acto Karim Hauser, coordinador de Programas Culturales de Casa Árabe.

Ziryab y la huella árabe en España

Decimosegunda conferencia del ciclo Aula Árabe Universitaria 5, a cargo de Glaire Anderson. 

Los videojuegos se han convertido en una poderosa herramienta educativa, una de las formas más significativas con las que el público se conecta con el pasado. Además, los juegos y las experiencias digitales inmersivas ofrecen a los historiadores del arte islámico la posibilidad de dar forma a percepciones del pasado más inclusivas y auténticas para el público general, haciendo que la investigación académica sea ampliamente accesible a audiencias fuera del ámbito académico. Los académicos reconocen el valor educativo de los juegos al hacer que el conocimiento sea más accesible e informando las percepciones públicas sobre el pasado. Dicho esto, los juegos que presentan historias y tradiciones visuales islámicas siguen siendo relativamente raros.  

En esta conferencia, Anderson hablará de la investigación que está llevando a cabo, en la que aúna el desarrollo de juegos con las colecciones de museos, arte e historia islámicas en juegos desarrollados por el Laboratorio Digital para Colecciones y Cultura Visual Islámica (Digital Lab for Islamic Visual Culture & Collections), en colaboración con socios de la industria, el mundo académico y GLAM (Galerías, Bibliotecas, Archivos, Museos).

Organizada en Córdoba en colaboración con el Grado en Historia del Arte de la Universidad de Córdoba, en representación de dicho grado, tendrá lugar el miércoles 17 de abril. Presentará a la ponente Rafael Blanco, profesor de Historia del Arte de dicha universidad. Modera Javier Rosón, coordinador de Casa Árabe en Córdoba.

En Madrid, se organiza el jueves 18 de abril en colaboración con el Máster El Mundo Ibérico Medieval: Hispania, al-Ándalus y Sefarad y el Grado de Historia de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Glaire D. Anderson
Glaire D. Anderson es la fundadora líder del Laboratorio Digital para Colecciones y Cultura Visual Islámica (DLIVCC) además de profesora titular de Arte Islámico en la Universidad de Edimburgo, donde dirige el Programa de Máster en Historia del Arte, Teoría y Exhibición en la Escuela de Historia del Arte.

Doctora por el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) en Historia, Teoría y Crítica de la Arquitectura y el Programa Aga Khan de Arquitectura Islámica, posee también un Máster en Historia de la Arquitectura y Preservación Histórica por la Universidad de Virginia.

Es autora de dos monografías que han sido premiadas A Bridge to the Sky: Art and Science in the Age of Ibn Firnas (Oxford UP, 2024), y The Islamic Villa in Early Medieval Iberia: Aristocratic Estates and Court Culture in Umayyad Cordoba (Ashgate, 2013), de numerosos artículos y de la coedición de The Aghlabids and Their Neighbors (Brill, 2018) y Revisiting al-Andalus: Perspectives on the Material Culture of Islam Iberia and Beyond (Brill, 2007).

Videojuegos para el arte y la historia islámica medieval

Twelfth lecture in the Aula Árabe Universitaria 5 series, to be given by Glaire Anderson. 

 Video games have become a powerful educational tool, one of the most meaningful ways for audiences to connect with the past. In addition, games and immersive digital experiences provide Islamic art historians with the ability to shape more inclusive, authentic perceptions of the past among the general public, making scholarly research widely accessible to audiences outside the world of academia. Scholars recognize the educational value held by games in making knowledge more accessible and shaping public perceptions about the past. Having said that, games which feature Islamic histories and visual traditions remain relatively rare.  
 
At this conference, Anderson will be discussing the research he is conducting, which combined game development with museum collections, Islamic art and history in games developed by the Digital Lab for Islamic Visual Culture & Collections, with the cooperation of partners from industry, academia and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums).
 
Organized in Cordoba with the cooperation of the University of Cordoba’s bachelor’s degree program in Art History, in representation of that degree program, it will be taking place on Wednesday, April 17. The speaker will be introduced by Rafael Blanco, an Art History professor at the University of Cordoba. Moderated by Javier Rosón, Casa Árabe’s coordinator in Cordoba.
 
In Madrid, we have organized for Thursday, April 18, with the cooperation of the Master’s degree program on “The Medieval Iberian World: Hispania, Al-Andalus and Sefarad“ and the Bachelor’s Degree in History at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Representing both programs, there will be participation and an introduction of the speaker by Santiago Palacios Ontalva, Vice-Rector of Bachelor’s Degree Studies and a Medieval History professor at the UAM, and Javier Albarrán, a professor of Medieval History at the same university. Moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe’s Training and Economics Coordinator.

Glaire D. Anderson 
Glaire D. Anderson is the founding leader of the Digital Laboratory for Islamic Visual Culture and Collections (DLIVCC), as well as a senior lecturer in Islamic Art at the University of Edinburgh, where she directs the Master’s degree Program in Art History, Theory and Exhibition in the School of Art History.
 
With a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Architectural History, Theory and Criticism and the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture, she also holds an M.A. in Architectural History and Historic Preservation from the University of Virginia.
 
She has authored two award-winning monographs titled A Bridge to the Sky: Art and Science in the Age of Ibn Firnas (Oxford UP, 2024), and The Islamic Villa in Early Medieval Iberia: Aristocratic Estates and Court Culture in Umayyad Cordoba (Ashgate, 2013), as well as numerous articles, and the co-editing of The Aghlabids and Their Neighbors (Brill, 2006), and Revisiting al-Andalus: Perspectives on the Material Culture of Islam Iberia and Beyond (Brill, 2007)

Video games for art and medieval Islamic history

Gaza journalist Wael Al Dahdouh, head of Al Jazeera’s bureau in Gaza City and a role model for Palestinian and Arab world journalists, will be giving a conference on Monday, April 8, at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba.

The session, organized by the Chair of Conflict Resolution at the University of Cordoba, with the support of the Provincial Government Office in Cordoba, will be taking place on the occasion of the awarding to Al Dahdouh of the seventeenth Julio Anguita Parrado International Journalism Award in the city of Cordoba. The jury for the seventeenth Julio Anguita Parrado International Journalism Award, organized by the Andalusian Union of Journalists, met at the Rectorate of the University of Cordoba and unanimously decided to bestow this award to the journalist from Gaza, Wael Al Dahdouh. With this award, in addition to distinguishing Wael Al Dahdouh’s career and his commitment to defending human rights, the jury explicitly wished acknowledge the Gazan journalists who are being subjected to extreme violence in Israel’s offensive. To drive this home, the jury pointed out that 75% of the journalists killed in 2023 worldwide were from Gaza. 

Wael Al Dahdouh became known around the world as a result of his coverage on Al Jazeera, after his family was intentionally bombed by Israel on October 25, 2023, leading to the death of his wife, son, daughter and grandson, just 18 months old. Al Dahdou was in Gaza City that same day to report on the latest developments when he was informed of his family’s death. 

Hours after that attack, Al Dahdou was back on the air, despite his personal tragedy, this time to be interviewed by a colleague, just as he had interviewed so many others before. Dahdouh was also injured in December when an Israeli strike hit a school in Khan Younis where he and a co-worker, Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa, were reporting. Abu Daqqa was killed in the attack. 

On January 7 of this year, Dahdouh’s eldest son, Hamza Dahdouh, also a journalist and cameraman for the Qatari television network, was with other journalists on a road between Khan Younis and Rafah when he was killed by Israeli drone strikes. Just a day before his death, Hamza had shared a post on X praising his father’s perseverance. “You are patient, so don’t give up.”

Wael Al Dahdou has since become an icon for the the Palestinian population of Gaza’s resistance and how journalism has been a key element in showing the resilience and dignity of a people suffering an unprecedented massacre in history. They call him “Al-Jabal,” which in Arabic means “the mountain,” for still standing tall as tragedy befell him throughout the course of the war. 

Al Dahdouh, 53, was born and raised in Gaza City’s al-Zaytoun neighborhood. Dahdouh worked for several local media outlets, including Al-Quds newspaper, Voice of Palestine radio channel and Sahar satellite channel. In 2003, he signed on with regional broadcasters, working briefly for Al-Arabiya before joining Al Jazeera. Since 2004, he has reported for the pan-Arab network and has managed its Gaza bureau. Dahdouh has reported extensively during each successive Israeli war against the besieged enclave. In 2013, he received the Peace Through Media award during the International Media Awards held in London.

El periodista gazatí Wael Al Dahdouh, jefe de la oficina de Al Jazeera en la ciudad de Gaza y todo un referente para los periodistas palestinos y del mundo árabe, ofrece el lunes 8 de abril una conferencia en la sede de Casa Árabe en Córdoba.

La sesión, organiza por la Cátedra de Resolución de Conflictos de la Universidad de Córdoba con el apoyo de la Diputación de Córdoba, tiene lugar con motivo de la distinción de Al Dahdouh con el XVII Premio Internacional de Periodismo Julio Anguita Parrado en la ciudad de Córdoba.

El jurado del XVII Premio Internacional de Periodismo Julio Anguita Parrado, convocado por el Sindicato de Periodistas de Andalucía, reunido en el Rectorado de la Universidad de Córdoba, ha decidido por unanimidad conceder este galardón al periodista gazatí Wael Al Dahdouh. Con este galardón, además de distinguir la trayectoria profesional y el compromiso con la defensa de los derechos humanos de Wael Al Dahdouh, el jurado quiere hacer un reconocimiento explícito a los periodistas gazatíes, que están sufriendo una violencia extrema en la ofensiva israelí. En este sentido, el jurado ha destacado que el 75% de los periodistas asesinados en 2023 en todo el mundo eran de Gaza.

Wael Al Dahdouh fue conocido en todo el mundo a raíz de su cobertura para Al Jazeera después de que su familia sufriera un bombardeo intencionado por parte de Israel el pasado 25 de octubre de 2023, en el que murieron su mujer, su hijo, su hija y su nieto de apenas 18 meses. Al Dahdou estaba en la ciudad de Gaza ese mismo día para informar de los últimos acontecimientos cuando se le comunicó la muerte de su familia.

Horas después de ese ataque, Al Dahdou volvió a estar en antena, a pesar del dolor, esta vez para ser entrevistado por un colega, del mismo modo que él había entrevistado a tantos otros antes. Dahdouh también resultó herido en diciembre, cuando un ataque israelí alcanzó una escuela de Jan Yunis en la que él y su colega, el cámara de Al Jazeera Samer Abu Daqqa, estaban informando. Abu Daqqa murió en el ataque.

El pasado 7 de enero, el hijo mayor de Dahdouh, Hamza Dahdouh, también periodista y camarógrafo de la cadena de televisión qatarí, se encontraba con otros periodistas en una carretera entre Jan Yunis y Rafah cuando murió asesinado por los ataques de un dron israelí. Justo un día antes de su muerte, Hamza había compartido un post en X elogiando la perseverancia de su padre. “Tú eres paciente, así que no desesperes”.

Wael Al Dahdou se ha convertido desde entonces en un icono de la resistencia de la población palestina de Gaza y de cómo el periodismo ha sido un elemento clave para mostrar la resiliencia y la dignidad de un pueblo que está sufriendo una masacre sin precedentes en la historia. Le llaman "Al-Jabal", que en árabe significa "la montaña", por seguir erguido mientras la tragedia se abatía sobre él en el transcurso de la guerra.

Al Dahdouh, de 53 años, nació y creció en el barrio de al-Zaytoun, en la ciudad de Gaza. Dahdouh trabajó para varios medios locales, como el diario Al-Quds, el canal de radio La Voz de Palestina y el canal por satélite Sahar. En 2003 se incorporó a emisoras regionales, trabajando brevemente para Al-Arabiya antes de incorporarse a Al Jazeera. Desde 2004 informa para la cadena panárabe y dirige su oficina en Gaza. Dahdouh ha informado ampliamente durante cada una de las sucesivas guerras israelíes contra el enclave asediado. En 2013, recibió el premio Peace Through Media durante los International Media Awards celebrados en Londres.
