Process notes

First day -

- Not intending this to be for the next Junto - it was Wednesday - I decided to program a samba beat in FL Studio from a book of drum patterns for four percussion instruments and then added a second snare. 
- Nothing especially out of the ordinary, it just felt like practice. I went to sleep wondering if I could take it apart somehow.

Second day -

- Spent probably too much time getting MIDI out of FL and into Ableton Live.
- I used a template that I developed last June for this particular concept, (”band”), I call Smile Puppy I used this concept for Juntos 0546 and 0599. This concept started for me in a very primitive way in FL 3.5 back in 2001-ish, so I always try to include FL somehow, so it seemed natural to use that concept name.
- Juggled the percussion tracks to have the thing build as it went, with some open spots too. Didn’t want to be linear, it felt less musical to me.
- My template included a track for raw audio that I removed and a track with a marimba sound and another one with an Operator pluck sound.
- I used a Max For Live thing called TreeSEQ by Gross9978 to generate the notes for the two melodic tracks, with the pluck aiming for the bass sounds. I then captured these two parts in two MIDI receiver tracks.
- I liked the pluck sound but not for bass. It didn’t have any hint of bass oomph and what can I say, I’m really fussy with bass.
- So I duplicated the bass part and with some messing around, I found something in Kontakt that was more bass-sounding to me but also a little off. That was it, I was going to stick with that.
- I took the original bass part, cut it in half, increased the octave I was in and half timed it as a solo near the end of the track. I also processed it with some of Live’s guitar-oriented effects but also a gate to gently tame it. Still it eventually took over without any intention from me and I liked that happy accident for an ending.

Update - third day 11/10
- after posting, I was not happy with the balance and I did another mix.

I Am As Dry As A Fish (disquiet0619)

hello everyone,

i took one of my favourite lines from wallace stevens

"sad men made angels of the sun"

and converted it to morse code midi, which i then used to trigger the different parts of a sampled drum kit.

kick = steady beat

sad = hihats
men = snare
made = floor tom
angels = rack toms
of = ride cymbal
the = agogo
sun = finger cymbals

the drums slowly fade into a return track (shifter at -12st >> reverb >> distortion)

the cymbals slowly fade into another return track (arturia efx fragments) which then slowly bleeds back into the first return track

[disquiet0619] beat the sun

I seldom work like this: creating a charged “full steam” pattern and placing it at the end of a crescendo, then moving backwards removing stuff till there’s nothing left at the beginning. I did it with drum programs a lot, but also with repetitive stuff (pianos, guitars) à la Reich/Riley. I like to have an idea of my “tutti”, my maximum peak in density and intensity, then going there from zero.
This track, recorded today Friday November 10th 2023, started with a programmed drum beat (using for the first time in decades my good old Alesis D4 module that remained unplugged in my rack, just to fill a space)
To complete I added two tracks of a Matrix 12 synth and cello samples (noisy)
The patter is 16 beats long but never in 4x4 time signature, it does something like 7x8 + 6x8 + 3x8
The synths are in straight 4/4.
The weirdness of the drum patter becomes evident as we progress and more elements appear.

The photo is mine, I can’t recall what that is. Paris 2019, it says in the folder…

I made a beat with Poly 2 and added some sort of bassline. Then I had the idea to sort of turn this into a live recording, so I slapped a snippet of a show by DJ Gruff on it. DJ Gruff, one of the pioneers of Italian hip hop, is also on the cover drawing. Much love to DJ Gruff - and to YOU too!

Disquiet0619 - Gruffetti

I play the drums so this disquiet assignment appealed to me. 

I decided that complex for me meant complex timing. I wanted to play something in odd time signatures, and I feel like the number 23 is underrepresented in music. Here was my process:

1. I improvised a 4 bar drum beat in 23/8 time (which I really counted as 8/8, 5/8, 7/8, 3/8), and recorded it in Ableton. 

2. I experimented with a few ways to “accrue” the beat, and decided to accrue by time rather than by part.

3. In Ableton Live, I edited the beat to repeat, but only play a section before repeating. I chose Fibonacci numbers for the length. For the first repeat only 1 8th note of the 4 bar 23/8 repeat plays. Second repeat, 2 8th notes. Third repeat, 3 8th notes. Fourth repeat 5 8th notes, etc until the entire beat is revealed. It took on the feel of a breakbeat.

4. For more accrual, I copied the original 4 bar beat to another track, and used a filter slowly introduce it beneath the Fibonacci cut breakbeat. They are not aligned at first, so there is a kind of beating that takes place between the two until the last full repeat where they are completely aligned.

Disquiet Junto Project 0619: Beat Accrual
The Assignment: Rebuild a complicated rhythm from scratch.

I created this beat using my voice, finger snaps, hitting the mic, etc. After chopping up all the components, I began layering them and playing with syncopation as well as eq and effects to create a sort of inhuman soundscape. 

This piece incorporates words I find myself using a lot either to please others or to show that I'm listening and empathizing. By creating an intentional rhythm with them, I'm exploring the mechanical quality these words can take when they're said out of habit or a sense of obligation.

I started initially with a 6/4 framework but hopefully the meter is fairly unclear and confounding throughout.

The Assignment: Rebuild a complicated rhythm from scratch.

As is generally the case with any instructions, it’s best to read all the way through before beginning.

Step 1: Create a complicated beat (define “complicated” as you see fit). Keep track of the individual parts.

Step 2: Record a track in which the beat from Step 1 slowly accrues over time. For example, break the original beat into its constituent parts and then add one at a time, repeating the arrival of each addition for four beats (assuming you’re doing the project in 4/4). That’s just one way to accomplish this.

Also: You might adorn the beat with other elements while it’s accumulating, or after, or you might simply leave it on its own.
