Andrea Taeggi, Snd, Tim Hecker, Alva Noto, Andreas Tilliander, Sutekh/Rrose, Pole... Many of my heroes were found on the Clicks & Cuts compilations or on the Mille Plateaux label.

Such sounds brought me depth.
Peace.
Space...

So much left to discover.

I started with the abstract beats that I love so much in the work of the artists cited above.
Trying to give most percussions their own sound…
Until I reached the limit of capacity of the machine.
Then I added some sad yet cheerful synth in the background…
To get the mix of sadness and closure that I can feel when someone has passed whose work I admire and will forever keep living in my heart.

Although I've heard plenty of glitch inspired electronica through the years, I don't think I've listened to a Clicks + Cuts compilation till now. The tracks gave me a good understanding of what to strive for.  I'm not familiar with Achim Szepanski and Mille Plateaux records, so this has been a nice learning process. Condolences to his loved ones, friends and fans on his untimely passing.

This was created in Ableton Live using a variety of its instruments, samples, and effects – along with Max for Live devices, Slate + Ash Choreographs and Spectres. A vocal sample of a lecture from freesound.org was also used. This turned out a lot less abstract and sparse than I originally envisioned, but I had a good time putting it together.

This Disquiet Junto prompt in honour of the late Achim Szepanski and the "clicks_+_cuts" compilations issued through his Mille Plateaux label made me revisit my past: I used to produce clicks'n'cuts tracks and perform them live with my band. That work was inspired by Jan Jelinek/Farben/Gramm, Andrew Pekler, Pole, Akufen, Swayzak, Perlon, ~scape and, of course, Mille Plateaux.

I found this to be an exhiliarating ride upon wave after wave of inspiration. Couldn't help but extend it and name it Chaiselongue -- so much fun working on this, hope you're having at least as much listening to it!

This was quite a rush job, starting with sample hunting in my very own treasure trove, finding micro samples of cuts, bursts of noise, vocal snippets -- then proceeded to recording some sub bass lines with my Fender Jazz bass, Boss Octave and Moogerfooger Lowpass Filter -- shuffled everything around until it felt halfway right -- et voilá!

The Assignment: Record a track in honor of the late Achim Szepanski.

Background: Achim Szepanski (1957-2024), founder of the Mille Plateaux record label, among numerous other accomplishments, died this week. This project is in his honor. You needn’t know much if anything to begin this project; just follow the instructions. As always, discussion of the topic at hand in the project’s llllllll.co message thread is encouraged.

Step 1: Listen back to the first Clicks + Cuts compilation album (originally released in 2020). It is streaming on YouTube (the first hour or so of that playlist).

Step 2: Consider the common elements in various tracks: the glitch effects, the sense of space, the attention to tiny details, the industrial minimalism, the emphasis on sampling, the tempo, the groove. What else do you hear?

Step 3: Record a track in the spirit of that first Clicks + Cuts album.

My notes:
I had not heard of the label, but was familiar with some of the artists on that compilation. I enjoyed the music and it was fun to try and make something inspired it. I used various samples including my handpan, camera, bathtub and water sounds from a Mr. Bill sample pack. The only non-sample part was is the bass track, which is from Ableton Drift synth. Processed the handpan samples with the excellent PitchLoop89 device in Ableton.
I imagined attempts at taking photos of, under and around water as this evolved.

sound art for disquiet0666.

Took some found objects I had been using like gongs and bashed them up with a hammer to get more of a wonky sound out of them (pedal bin lid, paint tin, bbq lid). Then played them with animal bones and a stick that landed on my head when I was out for a walk. Added a bit of nail violin. No effects, just EQing.

Part of making art/music is embracing the daemonic aspect of yourself as something useful, and creating a space where mischief is a positive.

took the barcode on the most recent module i bought - intellijel auxmix - and turned the barcode into a step pattern - at least the first 64 steps. narrow/wide meaning 1 or 2 steps.

this barcode step pattern goes through clock divider to get the same pattern at different resolutions. the most obvious (and fastest) one is the hats, slower divisions go to fm voice + granular triggers + various modulations
