There are plenty of peculiar tunes to soak up this week on CheapShow. The segment may be called Silverman’s Platter, but on this edition of the podcast, Paul’s brought along a few interesting records to listen to. A song based on popular TV show “Minder” and styled after Chas N Dave brings Paul and Eli’s attention to the work of The Firm, a music group that churned out one of the 1980s biggest novelty pop hits. Apparently, they had a whole album, so the cheap chaps take a quick tour of their output. There is also a strange album to listen to that was designed to help raise fund for children’s charity NSPCC in 1984. It’s packed with some obvious and not so obvious celebrities from the period, but we focus on Dennis Waterman’s rock n roll Lollipop song and Felicity Kendall’s moog flavoured ditty about fairies! It’s also time to return to the Country Urban Noodle Test Lab International Cuisine Kitchen with a few instant noodles that are new to Eli’s palate. Mr Silverman takes on a Lucky Me beef bone marrow treat and whatever the hell a “Milky Me” is! To make things more interesting, Paul and Eli also have got their own deities in small boxes. This isn’t going to be a problem at all!

Ep344: Firm Milky Lollipops

Some weeks on CheapShow, things get a little weirder than usual. This is one of those episodes. This week, Paul and Eli enter into the world of “Miss World” competitions. They’ve been given a board game, from the 1970s, that allows young girls a taste of a glamourous pageantry lifestyle. As they learn more about the world-famous beauty contest, the cheap chaps uncover some quite surprising facts. During gameplay, they’ll travel the world, putting on Vegas shows, auditioning for TV adverts and smuggling diamonds out of South Africa!! Who will win the crown? Whoever wins, we’ll all lose. Before all that, Juicy Jeremy has sent a parcel of pop, with three new, cheap soft drinks to evaluate! What will they make of Inca Cola, which is described as a “champagne cola”? Will the two limited edition Irn-Bru drinks pass muster? All will be revealed (maybe too much)!

Ep 345: The Miss World War

It’s not been much of a Summer this year, so while the sun is shining and while there are plenty of cheap eats to sample, why not go on a picnic? Paul & Eli gather up all the PO Box snacks and head off to Wimbledon Common in South London for another outdoor misadventure. As ever, there are thrills and spills as the cheap chaps stumble, sometimes drunkenly, through the woods looking for little nooks and crannies to stuff their greedy faces. Over the next two hours, you’ll hear them question the existence of some awkward porn, get typically lost, discover an ancient well, get spooked by a lady in the woods, and force all manner of great and grim snacks down their gullets. There’s bickering, laughter and disgust… but will they find a bloody Womble? Find out!

Ep 346: Come Hungry!

Whilst Paul and Eli have carried on regardless, there have been nefarious plans developing in the background and its not good news for the “much loved” economy comedy podcast. Following the shocking events of Red Nob Day, Richard Brandoff and Jimmy Biscuits are living in hiding on a busy roundabout. The other characters are also off the radar, and it looks bad for the extended CheapShow universe. To make matters worse, all those copy characters created by Brandoffski are making a push for dominance and it looks like they're going to succeed. Richard and Jimmy find out about the unbelievable success of “Thrift Pod” starring Saul and Levi and decide to check the podcast out. Turns out it’s pretty similar. Maybe TOO similar. Something is not right here. Why not make up your own mind and listen to both CheapShow AND Thrift Pod… Is this the end of everything we know and love?

Ep 347: Thrift Pod

Things are tough at CheapShow HQ, their rival podcast clone, Thrift Pod, is casting a long shadow over Paul & Eli and they wonder if their beloved economy comedy podcast can survive much longer! In a decision that definitely won’t bite them in the ass later on down the road, they agree to let Richard Brandoff sort the situation out, once and for all. On the off chance he is successful, what will his act of revenge cost the cheap chaps? While they wait for Brandoff to put his plan in action, it’s time to delve into doing what Paul and Eli do best. Whatever that is! This week, they have two weirdly flavoured hot sauces to sample, one of which takes Paul by surprise. There is also a chance to down some booze when they discover a range of Northern Monk ales that tastes like a range of Aunt Bessie desserts… and a roast dinner. It can’t be that bad, right? Do they taste… custardy?

Ep 348: The Custard Note

Special Guest: Gareth Reynolds
Things are looking up for Paul and Eli this week. The big wedding is just around the corner and Thrift Pod has been defeated! To celebrate, Paul ruminates on the dream guest for CheapShow and imagines what it would be like if comedian Gareth Reynolds was on the show. Sadly, this means that the only thing that can ruin this experience is his own imagination. Which it then proceeds to do. Poor Gareth is subjected to perverted personal electric blankets, a rude and vulgar board game, an album from 1980s icon Roland Rat and wraps it all up with a book that seemed more exciting when Paul first saw it… But in actual fact? It doesn’t go well. Along the way, Gareth will learn about “posh wanks”, Kunt and the Gang and tell us all about the Milwaukee Milverine! Thankfully, it’s all in Paul’s head. Or is it?

Ep 350: The Wedding Of Squishy Jim & Madam Ladyplops

Now that the dust has settled on the apocalyptic 350th episode, Paul and Eli can now concentrate on delivering great podcast entertainment. It’s time to reboot! They’re going to be more mainstream, more approachable, and far less crass from now on! At least that’s the plan. As ever with CheapShow, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It doesn’t take long for all the bad habits to roll back in, in fact they barely get past the cold open! Luckily, there is a great “Price of Shite” to investigate, kindly sent into us by the folk at the Killer Rabbit podcast. There’s also a surprisingly difficult “Off Brand/Brand Off” for Eli to take on. Are the knock-off Pop Tarts, Top Twists, better than their more recognisable competitor? Or are Pop Tarts pretty horrible to begin with? As ever, take a dive in at the deep end and indulge in more economy comedy podcast goodness.

Ep 351: Reboot

If there is one thing we love on CheapShow, it’s the Charity Shop Showcase. It’s the part of the show where we can spend a little more cash and show off something weird or wonderful. This week Eli has found something Pirates of the Caribbean shaped, and Paul has a Kenny Everett annual from 1981. Which will join the “showcase” and which will end up in “no place”? There is also a rather curious challenge ahead for the Cheap Chaps. They’ve been sent a range of Dr Peppers, each with an unusual flavour twist. Can Eli differentiate between the many variations, or does it all taste the bloody same? To make things a bit spicier, Paul is well up for a fight this week, which Eli finds unnecessary!

Ep 352: Dr Pepper's Flavoured Soda Cans

In a happy happenstance, this week’s episode falls on National Noodle Day, and to celebrate Eli and Paul have managed to get their hands on something a little bit special. Only available in Japan, the Nissin company have released two new products designed to appeal to “gamers”, the Gaming Cup Noodle Energy Garlic & Black Pepper Yakisoba and the Gaming Curry Meshi Energy Ginger Keema Curry. How will they fair with the UK’s self-proclaimed noodle super tasters? The cheap chaps are also gifted with some very special Chinese treats when a lovely listener sends them a range of mooncakes. Although a wonderful snack, Paul is going to have a very violent falling out with one of them. But which one? As ever, the answers can be found in this episode of CheapShow!

Ep 353: Noodles and Mooncakes

Just when you weren’t expecting it… BAM… More Winkie news! It’s been a few years since our epic documentary “Ep 181: Winkie: The Untold Story” and we were recently informed of not one, but TWO developments to what we already know! Thanks to the incredible work of Ivenne, and the translations skills of Markus Lindstrom, we have something a little special this week. There’s a recently discovered video on YouTube (see the video on the accompanying webpage for this episode) that contains footage from a French TV series, recorded in 1985, that shows the infamous Winkie billboard competition in action. However, with it being in French, Paul has had a clever idea… and it’s going to involve calling on some of the CheapShow family to help out! And yet there is even more new Winkie news than that! To top things off, Eli has more platters to share, one of which may be the rarest record they’ve ever discovered. But just because it’s rare, doesn’t mean it’s going to be any good. It’s a surprisingly packed episode, it even comes with a Singing Postman!
