SOULEANCE is the result of the partnership between the talented
producer Fulgeance and DJ Soulist of What The Funk.
Fulgeance is one of the artist belonging to the French label "Musique Large". Leading and managing several projects (Claude or Fulgeance solo...), this talented producer and remixer is well known for his devastating beats and his stunning live performances. Focused on hypnotic and electronic Hip Hop, Fulgeance subtletly mixes his different influences in order to extracte a "Low Club" groove, anthem and hit track of his last EP at Musique Large.
SOULIST our « démagogue » French funky president, is known in paris for electic sets and is the creator and resident Dj of the Paris' night events What the Funk, which sixth anniversary has just been celebrated. Disco, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, latin music as an obsession, his mixes have met numerous artists and reknown DJs, such as Cut Chemist, Keb Darge, Dj Vadim, Quantic, DJ Numark, Dudley Perkins, Madlib, Pilooski .
Soulist and Fulgeance met in 2006 while performing and have decided from then to work together on a new project called « Souleance ».... This project is the mixture of Soulist's organic influences and Fulgeance producer 's know how and malice.
An uncomplex project mostly inspired by Black Music which sums up several energies, rythms and beats such as hip hop, tropical, breaks or funky 80’s-boogie- disco style.
Playlisted by Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, LeftO with their Eps "Le Monde" & "Soupape" or "Le Plaisir 7inch" signed on UK label First Word Records their music and explosive live shows have travelled around the world these last two years : Zouk in Singapore, GP's Worldwide Festival in Sète, Nuits Sonores in Lyon, Lodz Kaliska in Krakow, Jazz Café in London, Satta Outside-Lithuania...
They also shared stages with Quantic, Gilles Peterson, General Elektrik, Kentaro, Amp Fiddler, Breakestra, Dj Cam, Benga and more...
Souleance's albums « La Belle Vie » & « La Beat Tape » also released on First Word Records were really welcome by french and worldwide press (Nova, XLR8R, Bonafide, Clash, ...)
Check also the new turn into their special-funk-music with EPs « Brotha », still inspired by soul and black music roots with a spice of bass music & a fuzzy electronic mixture or the afro-discoïde « Tartare » EP (including Débruit & Uffe Remixes).
Last imprint is « Bamboule » EP is a truly eclectic collection, comprised of afro grooves, tropical vibes, b-boy rhymes, head-nodding shakers and intensely hype floor-fillers & a 7" called François, acclaimed by Huey Morgan, Gilles Peterson & more ! This one announces French Cassette, forthcoming tape in 2019.

Got into DJ'ing in the early half of the 80's.Originally i started off off life as a breakdancer but was also  drawn to the scratching element of the music.So,as one did back then,i cut out a slipmatt from an old pillow case and got to work on an Amstrad stack system.I couldn't use the volume control so had to use the function button to cut the sound.This gave it an Eric B style scratch,messy but it did a job.It didn't take long for the turntable to eventually die on me so i used anything that played records until i finally got my 1210's in the early 90's.
I'd constantly be chucking out mix tapes but unfortunately living where i did the want for hip hop wasn't there so i moved onto the club circuit.
I did that for a good few years but got bored as the crowd then was only into what was in the charts and i liked breaking new stuff so eventually i knocked it on the head and only did the occasional house party.
Many years later,by chance,i bumped into an old friend who told me about some software he used to mix on.I got it and started putting some mixes together.This was all cool but i got bored quickly just blending one track into another every 5 minutes or so so started doing mash up mixes.I figured if i was using a program to mix then don't do what i could do on my turntables.
I know many DJ's don't class this art of mixing as real DJ'ing and of course they are right but i use my many years experience as a DJ to make these mixes work.
I've had many mixes played on The Streetsounds radio show with Morgan khan and also been lucky enough to be asked to mix up some albums(turning them into minimixes for promotional purposes).
My preference is old school but i do mix modern music also,basically,if i like it i'll mix it.
If there are any record labels or artists out there wanting to put out a megamix type album then(or minimix) inbox me.If i can work with it i will work with it.

"THE GAME CHANGER"

World Famous DJ Cheese has a long history in this thing We call the 'HIP HOP' He was born in W. Virginia then raised in Potters Crossing – Edison, N.J. and Later Move To Plainfield, N.J. when he was 9Yrs Old. Cheese started to deejay then, and as a teenager he traveled Europe and the states And Other Countries as a professional DJ with major artist like Lisa Lisa and the Cult – Jam, Samantha Fox, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Eric B. & Rakim. Run of Run DMC and Jam Master Jay spoke of Cheese in his verse "Here We Go" (…"My Rhyme Comes Faster Than Dj Cheese, The DJ cut the record … from the valley below…). DJ Cheese's song "King Kut" still gets play on the radio throughout the world, and has received awards here and in the U.K. "King Kut" was the first Hip Hop song to get primetime play in the New York market. This was a special achievement because at that time radio didn't play rap music before 9 pm., 7 days a week. In 1984, Cheese won the DMC World Title at the Disco Mix Championship DJ Battle for World Supremacy in Europe's Hipo Dome 1986. Cheese in is a member of the DMC Technics Hall of Fame. The DMC battle is held annually, with regional competitions held throughout the world leading up to the main event in Europe. Prior to Cheese, the winners had all been mix deejays (deejays who mix music together). Cheese lit up the show by Introducing cutting, scratching And Turntables Tricks, Hand Cuffed, Blind folded, Spinning Around 360 And Cutting & Scratching With A Sneaker On His Hand, techniques the world had never seen before. Cheese's generation helped define the swagger, and confidence of the streets that trickled down into Hip Hop's culture today. His street smarts and charisma keeps him relevant and close to the hearts of Hip Hop hardcore audience's. Showmanship is part of his legacy – smashing deejays, rockin' crowds, and creating a strong following panning generations. Vibe Magazine's chronicle of Hip Hop in an article tiled " The Vibe History of Hip Hop" – edited by Alan Light. The article paid homage stating " Centered around the turntable derring-do of DJ Cheese, "King Kut"'s atomic drum mix and sonic bell hook from "L'International" gave the Garden State its first hardcore hit." Many of his innovations and improvisations are recognizable standards in today's music. DJ Cheese is also in the Source Magazine's: 150 Greatest Moments; 89 "D.J. was the first DJ. to ever introduce scratching and turntable tricks to D.J. competition". He produced a track for Z-3 MC's called "Triple Threat". It's commonly sampled in music and commercials. He was first signed to Beauty and the Beat Records distributed by Profile and owned by Duke Bootee. There, Cheese produced records including "King Kut"; "Coast to Coast"; "What the Party Need" – Point Blank MC's; "Talking Dirty After Dark" soundtrack for Martin Larence's first movie. Cheese produced, scratched, and did drum programming on many big records including "Sun City", a track that featured Bruce Springstein, Eddie Kendricks, and many other huge artists participating to bring attention to apartheid, boycotting South Africa. He transcends time opening up for today's artist including G-Unit in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1999, the World Famous D.J Cheese and a long time friend and partner G man Allah teamed up to accomplish a childhood goal of theirs, making hot records for a living. They actually went a couple of steps further opening Undisputed Entertainment, an entertainment company with a young, urban, hip feel to it. Undisputed is marketing their brand, a way of life that is reflected in Undisputed Entertainment's productions. UndiEnt consists of a production company, publishing company, and recording studios based in Plainfield, New Jersey (birthplace of Parliament Funkadelic). Heavy Stylus: An explosive amalgamation of Jamaican roots, hip hop beats, heavy soul breaks and blaxploitation ghetto-funk.

I’ve been rocking funk/soul/beats/hiphop/roots for around 20 years in various bars and clubs across the South West, and have supported a wide range of acts and artists such including Jelly Jazz, Boca 45, Andy Smith, Quantic, Craig Charles, DJ Food, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Ugly Duckling and DJ Format.

Although I started as a vinyl-only DJ in Bristol, these days I use a pair of battle-scarred Pioneer CDJs as my weapons of choice. I’m currently a resident (of 11 years) at the Angel Bar on Queen Street, and in the past have held Exeter-based residencies at The Monkey Suit, Timepiece, Dr. Inks and Verve (now Urban Underground), as well as DJing regularly for Hold it Down.
