Hourglass without Sand

I had been working on this piece when our beloved cat, Tobi, suddenly passed away. A few days before, he had started to fade, but we didn't realize it would happen so quickly in the end.

I was playing my guitar, searching for harmonic notes while he sat in front of me. It made me sad to see that he was in his twilight days. In response, I played my arpeggio in reverse, so it sounded like falling rain.

By the time I finished working on the guitar piece, Tobi had sadly already passed away. I wanted to find a Buddhist chant for animals to help him cross to the other shore. I discovered that "Om Mani Padme Hum," meaning "Jewel in the Lotus," could be used to assist both animals and humans in planting the seeds of practice for their next lifetime. This beautiful chant also helps with the process of grief after losing loved ones, guiding them as they cross to the other shore. "Om Mani Padme Hum" is widely recognized as a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, often associated with Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. 

The ending felt like a way to send him off and into the light.

Each of the six syllables carries a unique quality and meaning.
