Edit: It is most likely a pine marten. I had another recording with visual contact and the sounds were pretty similar.

Arctic Geese migrating - 4/10/2020 - Makholma Night

I sat down to make music with the intention of finding a way to express my emotions at the moment, and I was confronted with a wall of mental noise, presented to me by all the music technology at my disposal. While I struggled to find my heart, my mind was busy thinking about technology and technique. After a bit of discussion with @dr.no and @Hawthorn, decided to run with that as the concept for the piece. This is the result. 

I decided to also take inspiration from #disquiet0460 and start with a tortured, complicated sound (evocative of the mental "noise" that comes from using music tech for expression) and transitions to the starting point, then returns to the chaos. 

I started with a simple arpeggio on a nylon guitar (which I later changed to a synth sound). Added a Bitwig Micro-pitch device set to an obscure Wilson scale, and added a send track with Output Portal (granulated pitch transformations in this case) & Thermal (more glitchy feedback fx) on it. Added automation to start with Micro-pitch wet, FX send volume, and global tempo set very high, decrescendo, and then re-crescendo, over the course of the track.

Sonic Ontology of negligence is a continuous research evolving from listening to abandoned places and landscapes reshaped by extensive intervention of human presence and exploitation, and eventually “given over“ to Nature to reclaim the space. In the process of conceptualizing Sonic Ontology of negligence, Manja Ristić resided in places that were heavily exploited and forever changed by the human urge to build, comprising thousand years-old quarries as well as present-day mega-structures, abandoned as a result of corruption and consumerist socio-political turmoil. The nucleus of the compositional structure is devoted to abandoned construction building site of the Stožice mega-structure, while layers of mnemopoetic sonic imprints are derived from an old lime-stone quarries from the island of Korčula in South Dalmatia, such are Glogovac, Lenga, Defora and Vrnik, but also abandoned mineral mines and lime pits from Fruška gora in Vojvodina, North Serbia, and other sites such is the military compound placed in the middle of the Avala forest in the suburbs of Belgrade. The poetical accent is given to the dynamics and textures of waters and aquatic micro spaces, which are building the formative/reproductive environments in the process of re-establishing bio diversities.

Manja Ristić graduated from the Belgrade Academy of Music and later also completed her post-graduate diploma in Solo-Ensemble Recital at the Royal College of Music, London. Besides performing in the field of instrumental electroacoustic music, her sound-related research is focused on an interdisciplinary approach to sound art, field recordings and experimental radio art.

The Absence started from listening to an old recording of the Wind Quintet by Serbian composer Ljubica Marić. After learning the composition well, I simply fell in love with the noise hidden in-between sounds produced by an old vinyl crackling and web compression. I made myself a little drone and soon realized the psycho-acoustic qualities of it. The narrative is wrapped around the noise pollution, from both below and above the Adriatic sea.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the second in a sequence intended to encourage and reward asynchronous collaboration. This week you’ll be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0472). Note that you aren’t creating a duet — you’re creating the second third of what will eventually be a trio. Keep this in mind. Leave space for what is yet to come.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to the pre-existing track. I lived in Houston for 9 months in 1997.  Lived and worked on Westheimer Rd.  I worked near River Oaks at a tech startup.  My wife worked somewhat nearby on Greenway Plaza at what is now Invesco.

The food in Houston was excellent.  One time, Dusty Hill from ZZ Top was behind us in line at a BBQ joint and ordered "a quart of jambalaya".  Yes, he was dressed like he was on stage.  I thought it was the perfect Texas moment.  Although a close second was going out with Ann's co-workers to somebody's horse farm in the country and one her co-workers rode a horse backwards very fast.  Nice people.

There should be more cars on whatever road this is.  I remember the traffic was crazy.  And the air often smelled of gas, the result of being close to oil refineries.

This track is a combination of several pieces of mine:  Aleodeology's "Time Travel Destination in the Past", "Simulated Gravity", "Aleodeological Travel", and "Empty Interstate Due to Microaggressions", along with my side band Vibrating Wires' "The Long Drive Out", "The Path to REM Sleep", and "Southwestern Desert" - and some field recordings of rain that I recorded.
