Fractal

“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating,” John Cage said in his 1937 lecture, “The Future of Music: Credo.” He continued: “The sound of a truck at fifty miles per hour. Static between the stations. Rain. We want to capture and control these sounds, to use them, not as sound effects, but as musical instruments.” In this week’s Disquiet Junto project, we take the proposition literally.

Generated with a fractal algorithm. Based on some vocals I was doing for another song.

Reflection

I sang a bit of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", fractalized it, and put some more vocal harmonies on top.

This is based on the fractal in the picture. 

An audio clip is split into fragments. Up and down represents the location in the clip where the fragment starts. Left to right represents time within the track. Many layers of the fragment starting at different times are stacked together, creating an echo effect.

Kyrie (Geometric Clouds)

This is a slightly new direction for me, I am using python to generate fractals in MIDI and importing them into Ableton to add the sounds. This is using Ableton's Operator synth and basic sounds. This is for the Disquiet open mic. Feedback is welcome, I am especially interested in pointers on how to improve my synth sounds.

Length: The length of your track is up to you.

Title/Tag: When posting your track, please include “disquiet0336” in the title of the track, and where applicable (on SoundCloud, for example) as a tag.

Upload: When participating in this project, post one finished track with the project tag, and be sure to include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. The Assignment: Interpret a painting by Agnes Martin as if it were a graphic score.

Step 1: Look at the work of painter Agnes Martin, best known for her parallel lines.

Step 2: Select an individual work that suggests itself to you as a musical score.

My imagination is not flamboyant today, I just went for some linear playing, both an upright bass linear impro and an harmonica and synth simple straight drone.

Thanks to the lockdown and the lack of proper work on these past 2 months I decided to (finally) open and old box of DAT I got from my storage place in Argentina when I was forced to close it and decide what to keep (bring it home on the plane), what to sell, what to discard.
These DAT (my go-to recording/archival media in the 90s)  included loads of tapes with Jams and impromptu encounters that I recorded there live and never ever listened to.
I realize now how good that attitude was,( just tape everything that happens at home or archival purposes), I did that all the time, stopped later, I promise to do it again in the future.

I discovered many gems, funny and intense moments, I include here one rehearsal for a song I composed in 1985 (one of my first proper composition) . I make a little bass solo that's pretty lame, but my partners live-at-home performance is awesome and I'm glad to make this available for you to listen and criticize.

This happened in Buenos Aires, March 9th 1995 at my home/studio in the Julian Alvarez street of the Palermo Viejo area. Recorded live to DAT (one mic for the guitar, one for the bass, a stereo AT mic for the percussion set.

Peaceful Invitation (disquiet0472)

Live electronics created in Pure Data. 
The tempo is 60 bpm (4000 ms & parts thereof).
In this version the right-hand stereo track has been panned toward the left. If required or preferred, this process can easily be reversed by re-panning it toward the right.
