Across the last year Oldboy has established himself as an integral figure within the UK Garage and Breakbeat revival. Through releases on Fly By Night Recordings, Noire State, Outhouse Sounds, Ratface Records, Reloaded Sounds, Da Demolition Squad, algo:riddims, Singularity UK, Special Blends, Over and Out, GLBDOM, 40GRIT Records, Diamond Hands Records, and Slippery Sounds, Oldboy has crafted a truly distinctive production style characterised by playful sampling, sharp drum patterns and club-ready basslines. 

More recently Oldboy has expanded his musical palette from his foundation in 2step Garage, Breaks and Speed Garage to Dubstep, Electro and the “Niche” sound of his hometown Sheffield. 

As the first returning artist on Gimme A Break Records, Oldboy’s “Mule Kick EP” melds numerous musical influences to construct a carefully balanced release. The EP’s opening track “Get Em Up” offers a rolling breakbeat composition founded upon a mischievous organ house bassline. “Sound O’ Da Metro Centre” and “Mule Kick” see a return to Oldboy’s rawer and more sonically aggressive production style with particular reference to Sheffield’s Niche scene in the former. In “Unsettled”, Oldboy experiments with percussive electro while maintaining the EP’s scratchadelic soundscape. Closing the release, Paris-based producer and DJ Pépé Elle provides a mind-warping 808 Remix of “Unsettled” fitted with a contorted half-time second drop for added pleasure.
