Across the last year Oldboy has established himself as an integral figure within the UK Garage and Breakbeat revival. Through releases on Fly By Night Recordings, Noire State, Outhouse Sounds, Ratface Records, Reloaded Sounds, Da Demolition Squad, algo:riddims, Singularity UK, Special Blends, Over and Out, GLBDOM, 40GRIT Records, Diamond Hands Records, and Slippery Sounds, Oldboy has crafted a truly distinctive production style characterised by playful sampling, sharp drum patterns and club-ready basslines. 

More recently Oldboy has expanded his musical palette from his foundation in 2step Garage, Breaks and Speed Garage to Dubstep, Electro and the “Niche” sound of his hometown Sheffield. 

As the first returning artist on Gimme A Break Records, Oldboy’s “Mule Kick EP” melds numerous musical influences to construct a carefully balanced release. The EP’s opening track “Get Em Up” offers a rolling breakbeat composition founded upon a mischievous organ house bassline. “Sound O’ Da Metro Centre” and “Mule Kick” see a return to Oldboy’s rawer and more sonically aggressive production style with particular reference to Sheffield’s Niche scene in the former. In “Unsettled”, Oldboy experiments with percussive electro while maintaining the EP’s scratchadelic soundscape. Closing the release, Paris-based producer and DJ Pépé Elle provides a mind-warping 808 Remix of “Unsettled” fitted with a contorted half-time second drop for added pleasure.

CDMUSIC009 - the next instalment in our electro VA series.

This eclectic collection of tracks showcases the talents of both emerging and established artists, drawing heavy inspiration from the legendary Detroit and Chicago electro scenes.

Our previous release was designed around peak time music and this new pack lends itself to the more experimental and heady side of the genre. If CDMUSIC008 was the party, this is the after-party.

CDMUSIC009 captures the pulsating energy and innovative soundscapes that have defined the genre for decades. Each artist on the compilation brings their unique perspective, blending classic electro elements with contemporary production techniques to create a sonic experience that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

With tracks by Greazus, Footclan, label boss Sharkki and a handful of new comers, listeners can expect a journey through the rich tapestry of Detroit & Chicago electro history, paying tribute to the visionaries who paved the way while introducing exciting new voices to the genre.

After a long hiatus HEFTY BRUISES is back with their second release. Steering towards the sound they want to push label boss SDS MAX slaps together another outing on the label with the help of Vere.

Ring Leader SDS MAX opens things up on the A side with familiar sounds of Grime, Dubstep and techno. Warping basses and squelching synths are backed up with weighty low ends and tight percs.

London based Vere shows off his production skill with his b side bruiser. Into The Hollow is a full drum workout which will leave you sweating, Skippy percussion added with subtle textures is all the ingredients you need.
