Since I was going out of town I decided to move the show to Friday 07/22. Most of the LLL gang still showed up to hang in the chat and let loose after the work week. It was pretty lively and an awesome time. I started things of with some almost meditative deep atmospheric rollers and gradually built up energy into some big room synth stuff. Not usually what I play, but it felt right for this day. Quickly moved into tech territory and dropped some big rollers in the 2nd hour before cooling down with more soulful fare at the end.

In the week leading up to this LLL session I had gone back to listen to some of my recent recordings. I decided I wanted to change up the formula I'd been following, which recently has involved a ton of minimal tech. I do love playing that stuff, but this week I opted for a more analog sort of "classic" approach to the liquid sound. More of a "summer sound". Lots of deep, jazzy rollers, chunky drums, rhodes keys. Some ragga vocals, some jungle, some atmospheric rollers. It's all in the mix. Tons of fun with the LLL crew in the chat this week.

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP68|AUG13|2022)

What was supposed to be a fun makeup of a canceled LLL session kind of took a turn when my main computer sh*t the bed during set prep on the Sunday morning of my birthday. I spent most of the day trying to revive a dead computer and making trips to Best Buy to get parts. By the time 7pm rolled around it was time to play and I still hadn't rescued my music off of it so I just played off USB. Just basically went live, ready to blow off some pent up frustration.

Lots of tech and neuro bits in the beginning and then moved into some true school golden era classics. Techstep and neuro with some classic liquid at the very end. Might have gotten a tiny bit sloppy in places, since I was playing my own vinyl rips of old classics. It was quite hard to keep a constant volume because of all the fluctuations in fidelity (and the 3 beers I consumed in rapid succession 😅)

Thankfully, with all the friends that tuned in showing love in the chat, it was easy to let go of the foul mood I was in when I started. All in all I'm glad I pressed on and did the stream despite the disappointing day. The healing power of music.... Thank you guys so much for hanging with me on my birthday. Much love ❤️

Birthday Special 100922

Recently I had a debate with someone about the term "liquid". He feels it's become an outdated term to describe what's basically become 75% of all DNB music produced today, and in a way he's right. I've long stopped worrying whether "liquid" actually describes what I play in these sessions. Instead I use the term loosely, mostly to set some sort of expectation of what you'll be hearing from me. In all practicality, I like to play across the board. It's deep, it's soulful, it's techy at times, it's dark minimal at others. It's abstract, it's jazzy, it's rolling, it's dancefloor, it's peak time stuff, it's afterhours stuff. Mainly I want it all to make sense in relation to each other. I'm less concerned about what to exactly call it. It's like that famous saying "House is a feeling"... Maybe "Liquid" is also a feeling and not just a specific sound? To be continued...

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP86|JAN14|2023)

This was one of those sessions where I went in with no expectations but  ended up pleasantly surprised at how everything just seemed to fall into place. Some of my favorite friends and close LLL fam showed up in the chat and we were just vibing from beginning to end! I kept things nice and musical in the beginning and pushed up the energy as the homies started showing up. There's a nice little ragga flavored roller section at about halfway where we even got a nice Hype Train going in the chat! (a rarity on my channel lmao). Second hour has a few tech rollers and some minimal bass oddities, before I switched back to breezy uptempo liquid at the end. I had such a great time and big shouts to my LLL regulars for the time, bits and wholesome energy 🖤🖤🖤

Pretty mellow vibe throughout the first hour of this sesh. Some lush jazzy cuts and deeper tings. Some jungle-flavored sounds about halfway, into some dubwise roller selections. This sesh has a little bit of everything. Because of a busy work week I didn't have all that much time to hunt down a bunch of new music. I still fit a good amount in here, balanced out by some classic favorites of mine and picks from the last couple of years that maybe didn't get a lot of spins from me at the time. Things start on a soulful /jazzy liquid note into some more driving, chunky classic-style liquid about 45 minutes in. Second hour is more on a dub roller vibe mixed with some minimal tech rollers ending with some uplifting vibe stuff at the end where I kept playing a bit longer waiting to raid @doughdj's channel. For this particular session I didn't have much of an advance plan or direction but things still seemed to end up on the jazzy/soulful side of the spectrum for a good amount of the first hour. It was a nice crisp spring day in Georgia so I suppose that's pretty appropriate. Some cool deeper/melodic new music got played in that hour before I amped the energy up a bit around the one hour mark. Second hour I settled into a slightly darker dub roller type sound, mixed with some angular minimal and tech rollers. By the end I ended back down into some deeper sci-fi liquid and soulful rollers to close it out. Fun sesh, good vibes as always. Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP94|MAR11|2023)

The 2 hour format of this stream is one I've become so accustomed to  over time that I've fallen into some kind of well-worn routine of how I approach filling the time. The downside of that is that when I play IRL gigs and I only have one hour to fill, I have a hard time jumping right into the explosive sound and pacing you need to catch and hold the attention of say, a festival crowd. I've been digging through my collection and building more expansive playlists than I normally would in order to force myself out of my comfort zone and try out different set structures, but also to play the type of energetic tunes I tend to avoid sometimes. Sometimes the experiments work, sometimes they don't, but it's always an entertaining endeavor trying to find out.

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP98|APR15|2023)

We were still in the throes of the pandemic when I launched the LLL series back in March of 2021. I had dipped my toes into the Twitch streaming pool through 2020 as part of the ATL DJ Collective crew but this was the first time I struck out on my own to do my own thing on my own channel. I had no idea where it was gonna end up but I set some parameters for myself. I wanted to avoid playing the same tracks from show to show and I wanted to make sure that every set I played met a minimum standard of quality to where I could throw the recording up on Soundcloud and it would stand up to some of the best mixes I heard from my personal DNB DJ idols. While I feel like in some ways I succeeded in that task, I think I underestimated the amount of work that would go into unearthing fresh new music every week, time spent organizing my Rekordbox playlists, tagging tunes by key and plain familiarizing myself with every new track, finding relationships between old and new tracks, devising a cue point system to alert me on the fly where vocals come in on tracks to avoid clashes. Not to mention, making artwork, posting on socials... The list goes on and on. I wish it were as easy as "just jumping on and playing for 2 hours". It's actually easy to do that, but can you jump on and PLAY WELL for 2 full hours?

With the benefit of hindsight and 100 LLL episodes under my belt I can undoubtedly say this endeavor has made me a better DJ, even with my 30+ years of experience going into this. The bonus level to all of it has been all the cool people I now call my friends, who log on every Saturday to watch me sink or swim every week. All the banter in the chat, tunes we've recommended to each other and bonding we've done over this music we love called drum'nbass. All the producers who've reached out to me and entrusted me with their exclusives. Everyone who's listened and shared on Soundcloud and socials... I appreciate y'all. I don't know for how long I'll keep this going, but for now I can call this experiment an unqualified success. Thanks for the support and much love 🖤

Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP100|MAY06|2023) *EXTENDED 3 HOUR SET*

This was an unexpectedly fun session. After a hefty work week I was feeling a little unprepared on Saturday and decided to sort of dig in to organize and analyze all the new music and promos and strategize on the direction this session was gonna take. A lot of the new stuff had that summer soul feel to it so I just let that be the guiding vibe. First hour was soulful feelgood lush liquid vibes for the most part. Things got a little darker and driving after the midpoint before settling into a stripped dark minimal roller type groove. Last 30 minutes I threw in a little jungle before bringing things down into some futuristic R&B vocal style liquid towards the end. Great turnout and interaction in the chat this week (We even had a Hype Train!). Really enjoyed myself. Much love to the LLL family 🖤

This episode turned into an unexpectedly sprawling session when I found out about 2 hours in that I was gonna have to keep playing to allow my buddy Subz more time before raiding his channel. I kept things rolling for another 45 min or so. We got lots of deep and soulful cuts at the beginning and pretty vibey feel throughout. Some upbeat tech rollers after the 1 hour mark as well as some weird deep jungle cuts. Always trying to find ways to keep things interesting for myself and the listeners is the name of the game.

This was one of those sessions that ended up all over the place. I started off on a low 173 bpm with some atmospheric / soulful / liquid vibes and gradually tried to inch up the tempo as I made my way through different DNB micro-genres. There was dubby bassline rollers, minimal rollers, tech rollers, some weird glitchy stuff and some borderline cheesy big room dancefloor stuff for good measure — and it was all good clean fun. Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP108|JULY22|2023)

While working this last week I had a continuous playlist on YouTube automatically select the first couple LTJ Bukem's Progression Session mixes. Listening to those mixes again (after a really long time) totally brought me back to that mid to late 90s period when atmospheric (or "intelligent drum & bass" as it was known back then) was really cutting edge stuff. I have such fond memories of that period of time — going record shopping and playing my first big boy raves... Anyway, long story short, that spell of nostalgia made me go digging through my Rekordbox collection for suitable tunes to try to recreate that heady, spacey, blissful vibe on the stream this week, albeit with as current as possible tunes.

A large section of the first hour is all classic sounding atmospheric with that chunky drum programming. Some jazzy and funk-influenced bits thrown in there too... From there it moves into hour two with some drumfunk roller energy before slipping into "endless summer" liquid vibes featuring a nice section of classic amen rollers; some old, some new. I kept playing a bit longer again this week, since my boy Dough who usually follows me was still out of commission. Ended with some of my favorite deep soulful cuts. It felt good to be back behind the wheels this week after an extremely hectic work week for me. One bonus result of having to skip last week's stream is that I had amassed an extra fat stack of new music. The downside of that is the feared "paralysis of choice" scenario where I start second guessing what to play and risk sounding unfocused. To counteract that I tried to stick to my classic formula of deeper organic feelgood liquid bops in the first hour, and moving into the darker tech synth material after the halfway point. I think it  worked out pretty good in the end. Great times hanging with the homies in the chat.

Besides all the new music that came out this week, I went deep into the LLL archives to find older tracks I've played on the stream before but for some reason I never revisited or put more widely into rotation. There's definitely a few gems in there I was able to slip into the mix. EP114 covers some ground starting on a deep and melodic soulful liquid note and expanding on that over the first 45 min to an hour when things get a bit more bassline driven. We move into minimal and dubby tech roller territory at the start of hour 2 into some darker rollers and some big room vocal numbers. For the last 30 we dip back down into some sci-fi and futuristic soul rollers till the end.

You would think that after going to a Sub Focus show like I did Friday, I'd be pumped to play some "dancefloor" DNB, but in reality kinda the opposite happened. I played way more minimal tech rollers and dubby rollers in this sesh than I usually do. I started with some deep and liquid soul vibes and moved into some minimal things about 45 minutes in and cycled through some different energy tech and sci-fi-liquid choons with a touch of austere ragga rollers. Fun sesh with an active chat today, some of my besties were dropping bits and buying Gift Sub Packs to my channel. I was definitely feeling the love — 2 hours seriously just flew buy. Liquid Lovers Lounge (EP123|JAN06|2024)

This week I announced that Liquid Lovers Lounge would cease to exist as a weekly stream, and moving to a monthly format instead. While this is certainly not the end by any means, it definitely marks the end of an era of sorts. When I started LLL as a weekly stream in early 2021, we were all still navigating pandemic times. Like most other DJs, it became the way for me to share music and connect with friends and fans during the uncertain times of social distancing and no live gigs. It was something I looked forward to doing every week as part of a very grounding routine and creative outlet. Lifelong friendships were forged and loyal contacts cemented inside that chat room over that period of time.

We're now quite removed from that. We've all since largely moved on with our collective lives. We're not spending as much time glued to our devices looking for entertainment anymore. I'm playing IRL DJ gigs, we're all attending real shows. In that context it makes sense for me to dial back the frequency of these streams.

Vetting that much new music every week, curating playlists, digging for music on a daily basis... as much as I love doing it, it's extremely time-consuming. My day job has very demanding hours. I've also set some personal work-related aspirational goals that will consume even more hours per week. In order to maintain a proper life/work/creative balance I had to rethink things. This was a tough but necessary decision to make.

Liquid Lovers Lounge is returning in February as a monthly stream and mix upload. Obviously, you can expect the same commitment to quality on my end. I'd like to thank everyone who's tuned in, listened, liked, shared and otherwise supported my content week in and week out. I hope you continue to do so. S/O to all the homies who've been sending me tunes, keep 'em coming ;)

FED — Spring 2024 Mix

Despite the disappointment of having to reschedule the return of LLL as a monthly stream for a couple of weeks, I could not be happier with how this session went down. The chat was thick with positive vibes and the LLL fam was reppin in full force. At the time of this writing I have yet to listen back to the full set but I felt pretty happy with how it was all coming together. Lots of new stuff in the mix with a couple of classics in there. Pretty wide range of sounds , but the overall feeling I was shooting for was just positive, upbeat and fun and by the end of it I was feeling like I had succeeded in that. Always thankful to my friends for spending this time with me. I was definitely reminded how much I miss hanging with the crew. It's been a pretty busy month of gigs for me, but it's always a good time returning to the stream to hang out and vibe with old friends. It being 4/20 and all I'm sure many people had Saturday plans, so it was kind of a low key affair, but the core group of the LLL fam were still present in the chat. I didn't let on when I was mixing live but I was having some severe technical issues with Rekordbox glitching out on my MacBook Pro. I'd have 2 records perfectly locked into the mix and they would inexplicably skip. I couldn't figure it out and rather than stopping the stream, rebooting and killing the vibe I opted to keep going. I'm still choosing to upload this mix with errors and all because I feel like there's some good music on here. D:RC came up DJing (mostly drum'nbass) in the mid-90s while attending the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. As founding member of the local Phungus, Playtheavy and Sleuth Empire crews he found himself at the center of a burgeoning rave scene, collaborating with friends on dance music events in the Athens/Atlanta areas and beyond.

In 2004 he founded Studio:Machina, a graphic design practice geared towards the music industry. Building on his behind the scenes expertise and keen artistic instincts he's become an in-demand contributor on artistic projects in a variety of media. He's toured the US as member of the Smookie Illson bass music trio, serves as creative director for the Chicago-based Illeven:Eleven Recordings label and functions as brand/art director of several nightlife concepts. 

Behind the decks he currently heavily favors the sounds of DNB, but brief forays into breakbeat, house, UK Garage + Bass and dubstep are not uncommon. Get to know.
