It’s a good day too.

A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

Fresh from the cauldron, I present a corrosive transmutation from silver to gold! You can even hear the ingredients crack, pop, and sizzle during the process.

What's the recipe? I used two takes from an old session (called Silver and Gold) with my beloved Cocoquantus (hence the crack, pop, and sizzle). A new plugin called Secta can split an audio file dynamically into different frequency ranges - it works nicely on some material but not on others. I managed to extract a low-frequency version ("copper"), some high mids ("tin"), and an envelope-gated version ("sulfur"), the latter. 

My initial idea was to phase-cancel the generated parts with the original track. That didn't work, as I was too stupid to apply the technique on a stereo track. So I faded out the original loop, built a transition with copper, lead, and sulfur, and ended with the gold track.

The third of these stages is “Separation,” which is symbolized by the element of air. Trying To Find Gold In The High Mids [disquiet0628]

Recorded, mixed and mastered on 12 May 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa. This was also Day 1381 of the 100 Day Project.

Process notes - 

After recording and assembling a track based on Oblique Strategies for a future Magpie Pirates community collab compilation, I started in VCV Rack with a number of Stochastic Telegraph devices - Embellish, Ruminate, Memory, Drifter - and a pair of Bifaco Even VCOs, Atelier Palette, the wonderful Seriously Slow LFO by Frozen Wasteland, the SurgeXT delay and Bifaco’s Spring Reverb and then Biset’s Tree as a sequencer, along with VCAs, AD EGs, a clock, attenuverters, a limiter, scope, I/O and Nysthi’s Master Recorder2. 

I made three passes - 

- A 2:11 first pass, intended as raw material for the slow track
- A 0:02 mistake
- A final 3:49 pass, intended to not be slowed down.

I decided pretty quickly that I would use the mistake as a loop and that I would pitch things down 2-4 octaves. Too much high end for me.

I transferred these to three tracks in Live 12, repeating the 2 second one as the loop for dead center and panning the others left and right. I pitched down, drew fades in, ran it through Ozone 9 and that was it, really.

In some words:
Composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist. Born in Argentina,
I studied music in Buenos Aires, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Paris.

For 20 years, I developed an important career as a session and backing musician in Argentina and Europe, playing, among other instruments, the bass, touring and recording with many jazz, rock, fusion, world, Latin and tango bands.

At the same time, I worked as an arranger, producer and musical director with many projects and artists in the USA, Argentina and Europe.

From 1992 to 1997, I performed my compositions live with my own band in Buenos Aires and began a solo recording career with the worldwide release of my first album "The Years Alone" on the North American label Green Linnet/Xenophile. On this album I arranged and performed 11 of my songs written between 1986 and 1993. I played most of the instruments, but included guest appearances by some great South American players.

My recording career continued with "Segundo Ciclo" (1997), released worldwide by Timeless Records, and 12 more albums released between 2000 and 2016.

Currently, I work as an on-demand film/TV composer while continuing to play live and produce.
