We know next to nothing about this band, other than they're from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You might even have guessed that from the distorted thumb pianos which are highly redolent of Kinshasa's most famous recent export, Konono No.1 - but Mbongwana Star (Mbongwana means "change", apparently) are a very different proposition. There's some very strange dubwise production, courtesy of Parisian and sometime Tony Allen collaborator Doctor L, some eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe. They're coming to Europe in April and May and there'll be an album on World Circuit around then too. We will be paying close attention.

In the process of transformation, a new sound is created. Exploring the transformation between different musical genres, the original inspiration for Beijing Opera Rock came from the seemingly incompatible musical forms of Beijing Opera and Jazz. It is built on a short phrase used as bridge (過門) in Beijing Opera music; however, set in a cycle of 7 beats similar to a lehara in Indian classical music. The middle section draws influences from Indonesian gamelan. As each influence presented itself, the contracting, complimenting, and sometimes contradicting natures are explored. The duality of yin and yang exists within each musical genre individually, and also in its relationships to other genres.

Composer and keyboard player based in Rome, born in 1977.
He is author of chamber music, symphonic music, operas, music for theatre, electronics, electro-acoustic, multimedia operas, music for films, song, interactive installations. He’s also an interpreter, improviser, teacher, music producer, band-leader and organizer. He works with artistic directors, institutions, ensembles, authors and interpreters from all over the world.
His music was performed in international festivals, radio and tv broadcasted, published, and it is known in academic and extra-academic contexts.
In 2007 he started the activity of indipendent producer, thanks to the collaboration with classical musicians, improviser and experimental artists.
The most representative works are: Guernica, 2007; Simurgh, 2007 (with Flavio Albanese); Prove di fuga dalla terra, 2008 (with Salvo Piro); Psicosusina Turboaccelerata 2013; Caligola, 2014 (with Vania Castelfranchi); The Zone, 2014 (with Blixa Bargeld and Theodosii Spassov). For most of them he wrote also the libretto.
