It’s been a while since I’ve put up a live DJ set. It’s also been a while since I’ve played a mostly electro set. Thought I’d take this opportunity at The Great Beyond this year to record a sunrise set driven by some of my favorite melodic electro tunes ever. Many which I’ve been playing for 20+ years.

A true legend in the electronic music scene, Efdemin embarked on his musical journey with his debut release in 2004, followed by his first album in 2006. Based in Berlin, he's not only a resident at the iconic Berghain club but also the curator of his vinyl-only label, naïf. His music is an embodiment of serenity and sophistication, characterized by an elegant darkness, subtle beauty, and a sense of unwavering composure. Efdemin's impressive discography spans LPs and 12-inch records on renowned labels like Dial, Curle, and Ostgut Ton. His versatility extends to remixes, including a memorable one for Depeche Mode, as well as his collaborative project Pigon with RNDM, and his exploration of drone and ambient soundscapes under his original name, Phillip Sollmann. 🎧

Efdemin's SPANDAU20 mixtape offers an immersive auditory journey, commencing with a potent voice sample from the celebrated artist Tracey Emin. The mixtape's sonic landscape is characterized by atmospheric elements, including the gentle sounds of birds, creating a serene and captivating ambiance. As the mixtape unfolds, it seamlessly transitions from ambient to deep, rhythmic beats. Its character is defined by sultry, groovy rhythms, complemented by the warmth of synthesizers that envelop the listener like a sonic embrace. Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.

His close listening/open format freak party Giambrone and Co was one of our favorite club nights in NYC — inviting guests like Kiernan Laveaux, Davis Galvin, T.Wan, WTCHCRFT, Sobolik, and Nishkosheh for all night b2bs with Tony himself. Recently, Tony has joined forces with Chicago based DJ and deep midwest talent sold (aka Glorbis) for a new party called Hodgepodge in his new home city. Tony will be making his Nowadays debut with us and we couldn’t be happier to have him on closing duties."

SORRYMIX25 comes via Sorry Records founder Nick Boyd (@nickboydnyc),  opening up our first ever Nowadays party with a special set in the Loft tradition — a gateway to entry pulled from the most meaningful corners of the label head/deejay’s record collection, presented as is and in full (no mixing!) with love and care. Nick’s work — running Sorry Records, holding residencies on The Lot Radio and 8 Ball Radio, writing about music for publications like Love Injection and Crack Magazine, and releasing mixes for outlets like Honcho and Spontaneous Affinity — all aims to exhibit a balance of deep reverence and humor, erase any misplaced pretension from the underground, and connect newer generations of dance music freaks to the history of love and community that has come before us all.

"“This was my first time playing Nowadays, and it was a huge privilege to perform in the space. The set was much different than I planned: I'd prepared 50 or so records and a digital playlist with about the same number of songs. When I got to the gig, an image flashed in my head of my USB still in the CDJs at my studio. I hoped it wasn't true, but my stick was in fact not with me, and it was vinyl or nothing.

Funny enough, this actually brought me a sense of relief. An element of bad luck or chaos acts as both a constraint as well as freedom from the self-imposed burden of perfection. I've jokingly projected this phenomenon into a deity called "The Hand". You can certainly hear working it in this mix. What begins as discomfort evolves into an exciting surrender to entropy.” - @30000AD

One of our absolute favorite young producers in the American underground — Birmingham, Alabama-based producer/dj SWAP MEET! is coming to town for a special first time ever b2b with Sonic Messengers head and all-around NYC legend AceMo. You’ve got to hear SWAP MEET! stuff if you haven’t already; a diverse array of superbly funky, sublimely bangin releases that sound like someone threw Midwest rave tradition and the UK hardcore continuum into a Deep South blender!
