Groove In My Soul

The hum of the ship’s engines was a constant reminder of how far from safe Neon truly was. She stood near one of the narrow viewports, watching as Mastika's barren surface shrank into the darkness of space. It should have felt like freedom—leaving that twisted world behind—but the weight of Thorne's words pressed heavy on her chest.

"You’re quiet," Thorne remarked, stepping into the control room behind her. He moved with the ease of someone who always had the upper hand, every gesture calculated, deliberate. His gaze locked on her, assessing.

Neon glanced at him but said nothing. Her mind churned with possibilities, every scenario darker than the last. She had the Coranthium, but at what cost? The Vantoth would come collecting, and from everything she’d heard, their methods of settling debts were brutal and non-negotiable. But Thorne, as always, was an enigma—was he just another cog in the machine, or did he have his own game to play?

“You didn’t mention the debt when we made this arrangement,” Neon said finally, her voice cutting through the low hum of the ship. “I don’t like surprises.”

Thorne leaned against the bulkhead, arms crossed. “If I’d told you, would it have changed anything? We both know you were out of options.”

Neon stiffened. He wasn’t wrong, but it grated on her all the same. “I prefer to know exactly what I’m signing up for.”

A slow smile crept across Thorne’s face, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You knew enough. The Vantoth don’t deal in charity.”

Her fists clenched at her sides, a hundred retorts bubbling to the surface. She forced herself to focus, to stay calm. If she wanted to survive this, she needed to keep her wits about her. There was always a way out. There had to be.

“So, what now?” she asked, changing the subject. “Where are we headed?”

Thorne walked past her, adjusting something on the console. “We’ll rendezvous with a Vantoth cruiser near the Helios Expanse. They’ll take the Coranthium off your hands, and then we part ways. What happens after that... is your concern.”

Neon watched him closely. There was always an angle with Thorne, and she had to figure out what his was before it was too late. “You’re not staying with them?”

Thorne paused, his fingers hovering over the controls. For the briefest moment, his confident façade cracked. “No. I have my own business to take care of.”

Before she could press further, alarms blared through the ship. Red lights pulsed along the walls, and the view outside the port shifted as the ship dropped out of hyperspace with a violent jolt.

Neon grabbed the edge of the console to steady herself. “What the hell—”

Thorne was already moving, his expression grim. “We’ve been pulled out by a gravity well.”

"Pirates?” Neon asked, her voice tense.

“Worse.” Thorne’s fingers flew over the controls, but the strain in his jaw told her everything she needed to know.

The ship lurched again, and outside the viewport, a massive shadow passed. Neon’s stomach dropped as she recognized the silhouette of the vessel.

Vantoth.

“They’re early,” Thorne muttered. “This wasn’t the plan.”

Neon’s pulse spiked. “What do they want?”

“They're here for the Coranthium. And if they don’t get it, they’ll take us instead.”

Why the name Dark Side of Synth? Because it’s cool and it sums up my fascination with the dark side and with synthesizers. Dark side not just as negative but also as obscure, unknown, unexplored...

Don’t worry, you won’t be finding only darksynth, heavy, scary and sad tunes and tones here but quite a wide range and lots of happy, upbeat things too. Again, it is just a name – not a mission statement set in stone forever.
