This is a concept piece based on the act of guided improvisation for any instrument. Darlene (a wonderful composer, singer and cellist) had a single sheet of A4 with some harmonic guidelines in front of her. We then recorded the piece three times. Each time Darlene played the improvisation, she listened to herself playing the previous version. When all three improvisations were layered, we played these back into the room and recorded them again and again, until the original version became unrecognisable. This then became the backing track to another (final) improvisation of the piece.

An instructional text score for any sustaining instrument and live electronics.

I made a Max MSP patch to analyse the first two notes of the piece and send data on the eight most resonant frequencies within them to several electronic chimes, along with very narrow EQ filters which are applied to the live instrument, creating a unique set of resonant 'strings' for it.

The piece begins meditatively, with the resonances reacting quickly to the live input. But with each of Dr Willie Ong's tips, the strings are increasingly delayed to create a textural frame for the player, who is encouraged to become more gestural and to explore the resonances that are swirling around them.

Lochaber no more was written for the Explorathon Festival in a joint project between RCS and St. Andrews University. It was written in collaboration with Emily Betz, a PhD candidate researching the history of melancholy in Britain, 1580-1780.

The initial tune comes from Farewell to Lochaber, a Scottish traditional tune. We found it in 'The Merry Musician; or, A Cure for the Spleen: A collection of the most diverting songs and pleasant ballads set to the violin and flute, adapted to every taste and humour', published by Walsh, Hare, Bettesworth and Brown, 1716. This tune is in turn thought to be based on Limerick's Lamentation, by 17th century Irish harper Myles O'Reilly, although 'provenance is claimed by both Ireland and Scotland'.
