Grace Jones - Williams Blood (Yam Who? Electric Dub) - 2014 Remaster

The prolific Manuel Costela has worked in a range of house and disco styles over the years, but this three-tracker for Bengoa's Athens-based B2 Recordings finds him firmly in deep house mode. Opener 'Unpleasant Dreams' is a suitably drifty and abstract affair, albeit still underpinned by a hefty 4/4 kick and with sampled, spoken vox to stop it washing over you. It's 'I Feel It Coming' and 'Inner Journey' that work better for yours truly, though: both (the former especially) are just a little more uptempo and driving, and both add garage-y elements that help infuse proceedings with a little more soul and groove.

Name Simplex Motive has been roaming through some releases for quite some time, just giving us a glimpse of his production occasionally In the form of remixes and singles. Not known to many, Simplex Motive is Igor Gonya's side project, which serves as a vessel for his creative expression to explore the territories of Deep House.

"Clouding Of Concessions" is the first capital EP as Simplex Motive, which we present with pleasure as the 15th release on FRI.

The opening track, Clouding Of Concessions, defines the sound that the Simplex Motive project stands for. Hypnotic grooves, liquid scapes carried on tight drum and baseline foundations,and arrangements imbued with awkward dialogues on breakdowns

For the right contrast, collaborations on the track Let Us Know How We Feel" with Dobro Labels head Iner and the track "Tell Ya" with vocalist Charlie Sputnik showcase a brighter shade of the EPs while keeping the characteristic sound of the Simplex Motive project.

Kaninchenbau's main collaborators Sokur and The Funk District helm this latest intergalactic journey in the form of 'All Over You'. It's a superbly tasteful and deep disco joint with lush synth work and the sort of groovy drums that make every head to the floor and get down. Next to the original is a classic 'House Mix' version and then comes two epic remixes on the flip. Both are from accomplished and ever busy Razor-N-Tape producers Nenor and DJ Vas who bring a real touch of classic to their work and offer a different look than the A-side.

The chunky "You Decide" is a brand new slice of modern boogie-fied house built around a killer Malavasi-style chord progression. Maurissa provides a sultry vocal, sounding somewhat Patrice Rushen-ish, with a plethora of analogue synth riffs happening behind her. For those who shy away from a full song, check Maurissa’s Message, in which an old-school answering machine takes centre stage, whilst also bringing some of the jazzier instrumentation to the fore. The album London / Detroit drops at the end of Feb.
