Summer is here!  Bright sunny skies, and warm nights make way for some fresh new tracks (and classics too).  The following compilation contains the music that got me all up and bumpin for the month of June.  

It's been a fantastic month for funky soulful music lovers, as a result the track selection larger then normal. Another standout track from the recent Sunburst Band album is the boogiefied house cut ‘Definition of Luv’ featuring Diane Charlemagne. 

Rising star Sean McCabe once again comes through with a brilliant remix adding his trademark deep and soulful house sound using Diane’s vocals to great effect. His Main mix is one for the soulful house heads while his Definition of Dub goes a bit deeper and dubby.

Following on from the likes of “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” “GoGo Get Down”, the well-received and growing Under The Influence series and the ever-popular Soul of Disco albums, Z Records continue to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, soul, funk and boogie. Now ZR returns with a long overdue Gospel album compiled by David Hill. 

A word from David Hill...

“Gospel music has often followed the prominent trends in secular music, probably in the hope of widening its audience by giving the subject matter a sprinkling of cool. In the 60s it happened with R&B and then funk-flavoured gospel, the 70s brought sweet-soul crossovers, and by 1975 the sounds of early disco had started to permeate the genre. This compilation brings together overlooked gospel gems that have their production rooted in disco and boogie, the sound of the early 80s that followed in disco’s wake. It’s only recently that this music has begun to be appreciated by fans outside of its original target market, and I’m glad to help it finally reach a wider audience.”

David began his music career in 1994 as a member of the Ballistic Brothers, together with Ashley Beedle and Rocky & Diesel of X-Press 2. In 1994 he co-founded the Nuphonic record label, where he managed the creative aspects on almost a hundred releases, with artists including Faze Action, Norman Jay, Andrew Weatherall, Maurice Fulton and David Mancuso. In addition to the record label, Nuphonic also produced the Sony award winning London Xpress radio show for Xfm, which led to various club nights. 

David has also acted as a music consultant to several record companies, one of these being Soul Jazz records, who he produced a series of successful albums for - in 2004 the ‘World of Arthur Russell’ and more then the acclaimed ‘Soul Gospel’ series. He was also production consultant for Auralux, the London based reggae reissue record label, where he worked with Lee Perry, King Jammys, Sly & Robbie and Linval Thompson.

He continues to work on personal projects such as Rootikal, the monthly roots reggae Night, and has a number of reissue and compilation projects currently in production. He is also currently overseeing the production of a book and an accompanying touring exhibition that will showcase Bill Bernstein's photographs of New York nightlife in the late ’70s.

Overdose Of The Holy Ghost compiled by David Hill - Promo Mix

We've seen this story in music time and time again; Al Kent - the ambitious producer who spent his life's earnings making his dream project. The project was the Million Dollar Orchestra, an army of musicians whose sole mission was to complete a fully orchestrated Disco LP born in Al's mind and inspired by the lost sounds of classic '70s material much in the vein of the Salsoul Orchestra or MFSB. The MDO LP achieved just that. The music was rich with lush strings, thick brass sections and filled out with arrangements of epic Disco proportions. The LP was magnificent, however much like history has also shown us time and time again; this ambitious project left the producer completely spent, both emotionally and financially.

As we all know any producer worth his salt rises from the ashes and always comes back, usually with a newer stripped down sound and condensed studio budget. This is Al Kent's rise from the ashes that sees him coming at us full throttle even with his bruises and broken bones. This is part of the natural cycle we've seen before in Disco history. Private press Disco records sell for hundreds of dollars on ebay because of the mixture of raw energy that is harnessed in one studio take and the underfunding involved creates a distinct sound on those vinyl platters that can't be replicated. That is unless of course like Al Kent, you record much of your new secretive LP in your bedroom hence using a lot less musicians than you did last time around and then complete the rest of the project in a fully analog studio called The Barn.
 


Al dug out some old tracks he'd been working on previously. Some were half finished, others were little more than ideas, and a few were demos he'd put together for the Million Dollar Orchestra. He got some musicians back together to record a few bits and put these nine new tracks together. It didn't take as long as MDO, but then he didn't record a brass or string section this time. However the tunes do focus on neck snapping drum breaks, heavy boogie bass lines, the bottom heavy aspects of Disco, or as I like to think of it - the underbelly of real independent Disco. It was all mixed at The Barn again, "because that desk and reel to reel tape is just too nice." On the technical side, the difference between digital and analog especially in the right hands is night and day. When it goes through a proper desk where all the effects and all the reverbs etc, are real, it makes a massive difference. It throws up all sorts of challenges which on a computer would be fixed in seconds with some preset. It takes a lot of time and thought to do this using more traditional methods but it's worth it when it works out. 

The finished mixes were bounced to tape - i.e. played back through the mixing desk to a reel to reel machine then recorded back to the computer via valve compressors and other gizmos. That process just pulls everything together and the tape adds a certain something - a warmth that's totally missing in digital recording. 

On the creative side Al thought that an album of all up tempo tracks that were primarily DJ friendly didn't make for a particularly interesting album, except to DJs. He wanted to find a way to make it more interesting for the general public to listen to as well. The LP starts off with a banger and track tempos vary from fired up dancers to mid tempo hustles and down tempo steppers, all the while woven through recordings of lost DJ interviews, commercial advertisements for old Discos, and even revisits the Disco Sucks riot in Chicago's Comiskey ball park over the course of the LP. Al expropriates the Disco Sucks chants and even including it in one of the tunes. The phrase "Disco's Revenge" immediately comes to mind. Don't forget Al got his start as a soul boy and the star tune of this LP may even just be the vocal anthem "Come Back Home" featuring Tyrone Taylor on vocals. This is a welcome addition to Al's discography and brings his sounds full circle.

This independent Disco LP is woven from the mind of a true Disco aficionado (some may even say Disco obsessive) using both real history and new sounds to create a modern disco fantasy for all to enjoy on their headphones or on the dance floors. Come Back Home

Vince Montana Jr left us on April 13, he was 85 years. 

He spent most of them writing, playing and arranging beautiful music. You can hear playing vibraphone (or vibes for short) on pretty much EVERY recording that came out of Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio from the late 60s to the mid 80's.

He was playing the vibes with MFSB, composers Gamble & Huff's studio supergroup, the core of what is known as the Philly Sound. He conducted the same musicians as his own Salsoul Orchestra giving them many classic Disco songs, amongst them the infamous Runaway with Loleatta Holloway on vocals on which you can clearly hear Vince's trademark vibes licks. 

In the 90's newer school House producers got him back in the studio and he arranged strings for Mousse T, DJ Meme and most notably for MAW collaborating on the Braxton's cover of the Boss and remaking his own classic Runaway.  

When I first heard "The Way U Love Me" I immediately asked to remix it and a budget to be able to get Vince to score the strings and vibes in Philadelphia. I was certain the song could be turned into a Philly Sound classic. Despite suffering with major illness at the time Vince enthusiastically accepted and made my dream come true.

The T.S.O.P. version of "The Way U Love Me" is the remix I'm the most proud of. It features a cast of more than 30 people, each one of them putting a part of their soul in the recording.
The mix you can hear on this page is an unreleased instrumental edit where the forefront is taken by the string orchestra and vibraphone solos.

As India was saying in the NuYorican Soul remake of Runaway:
"Vince, play them vibes for us just one more time"

The world we live in, on a very fundamental level, is flawed.  On the eve of my tenth album release I'm still writing my own bio and wondering if I should refer to myself in third person, analyze the past 15 years and justify bad career moves as artistic integrity, and promote myself as the unsung hero of techno and house; a mere victim of poorly timed strokes of genius (numerous!) and being born in the wrong part of the world.  Well, sarcasm never really did become me, and irony works only if unnoticed. Double fail.  It's easy enough to google up some old Jori Hulkkonen bio with real biographical info, or check out my discography from my website so I'll spare you the boring details of my "career".  Ever since the late 80's when my obsession with all things music started to manifest itself with an increasingly verstaile record collection and eventually some synths and experiments in songwriting, it has been quite clear to me that I'm destined to create my life's work within the business. The problem is that as an idealist cynic with tight grip on realism I'm well aware that 'the biz' is a sinking ship more or less, and I'm already dancerously close to the waterline. But the good news is that I stopped caring.
Here's why:
Having released my first proper artist album in 1996 for the French label F communications (defunct now since 2008, with my album "Errare Machinale Est" as their final release -coincidence?), I've managed to do something I never thought would be possible, something that I'm the most proud of all things in my career: never becoming popular.  After nine albums, dozens of pseudonym releases on superhot labels (like Rekids and Get Physical just to mention a couple from the past few years), close to a hundred remixes, my own radioshow on national radio for more than a decade (in Finland though, so it may not count), thousands of DJ gigs all over the world under my belt (OK I never actually counted but a quick calculation tells me it must be close to 2000 now), producing and writing songs for the likes of Tiga (whom I created in the first place), and having a reputation as a producer who can make an 808 kickdrum sound like a jazzy flute, you'd expect that there was a time when I was The Shit. But I never was!  Sure enough there's a lot people who never were "big", but are they still working? Releasing albums, singles, getting remix requests and DJing all over after 15 years? No. But I am. And this I see as my greatest achievement and there's a lesson to be learned everyone: If you never become trendy it's impossible for you to become untrendy.  Will all this change now though with my hotter than hot new album on Turbo, or the buzz around my Acid Symphony Orchestra (a piece I wrote for ten tb-303's and a 707, conducted by me)? Or the rumoured collaboration with Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys?
It remains to be seen but I'm dedicated to give my best shot to not let it happen.
Man From Earth, my tenth studio album, is the first "Jori Hulkkonen" album not released on the now defunct F communications.
How will this change of label affect my sound? Is this the end of ballads, jazz and ambient? Of course not -not even for me - but the album is a deliberate (as in not forced) departure from the bedroom vibes with focus on jams for the dance crowds.
Recorded at my alppIVhouz studios, most of the tracks were intended for 12" singles so they are not album tracks as such, therefore the album is maybe not as coherent and subtle as some of my previous efforts. But what it may lack in atmospheric synthpads, "scandinavian mooddesign" and social commentary it makes up in catchy basslines, sizzling hihats and semi-danceable tracks.
