Such an honor to be invited again to collaborate with Seagull, a wonderful musician and creator who challenges me to reach beyond my usual genre of music to add to his.  This time it is to join him in a place of rest for the heart away from the turmoil that fills the headlines.  We ask you to join us too for a few brief minutes.

How wonderful it is to work with skilled guitarist and synth artist Seagull and ace guitarist Ed Cunningham on our tribute to the night sky; a favorite pastime of mine in years gone by. I was once an avid amateur astronomer (still have my telescope), until I got caught up in the guitar universe and this wonderful place called Soundcloud. Quietude in the midst of chaos, confusion, uncertainty, and restlessness; Seagull captures an Eden-like vision of tranquility and reflection.  It also came with a surprise he kept securely under his hat; I would be joined in the collaboration with him by two of my favorite SC artists, Ed Cunningham and Dan-t, masters of their genre. I didn't know until he unveiled the finished product.  My approach turned out to be "less is more" so I show up to the party fashionably late at just past the 2:00 mark, but what a lovely party...and vision.  I hope you think so too. The Quietude (Seagull, Ed Cunningham, Dan-t, David Dunham)

What began as a prosaic comment evolved into an enriching collaboration.  Our friend and Soundcloud poet laurate Peter joins us on a fishing voyage.  Seagull, not content to do a simple voice over, remixes the track and places us on a fishing boat, the sea a bit rough, the gulls impatient for part of the catch, and Peter not just reading but dynamically narrating what he is experiencing on the deck of the ship.  What an honor to work with these artists enlarging on our previous collaboration. My sanctuary from archive gleans
The gentle times, wherein my mind

"The Candle" is an ode to 2 genres I adore since many years:
Funk 'n' Fusion & Celtic Music.
Through the years I've dedicated some original tracks of mine to these beloved genres (for example: https://soundcloud.com/quipmusic/calaminus-jiggle-from-on-the-trail) - many of them released within the 2012 album "On the trail".
These tracks were inspired by several musicians/bands who combined Celtic Music with Funk, Jazz and Groove to a Fusion of its own, such as Bill Evans Soulgrass or the early Peatbog Faeries... up to the very special Salsa Celtica who combine Celtic Music with Salsa!

"The Candle" continues the journey of jigs and grooves I started to make (on) my own seven years ago... and spins it further a bit.

This track is also the start for a new collection of original tracks of Calaminus: The Light Series. Topically these tracks will all circle around LIGHT and try to correlate with it musically.
Cause we all long for some light, don't we?!

DNA Blues est un blues aux sonorités africaines, comme on peut l'entendre au Mali et rendu célèbre par quelques musiciens tel Ali Farka Touré. 
Considéré comme l'adn du blues par Martin Scorsese dans le film documentaire du Mali au Mississippi, cette musique dans sa forme la plus ancienne est à l'origine de bien des genres musicaux que nous écoutons aujourd'hui.


DNA Blues is a blues with African sounds, as can be heard in Mali and made famous by some musicians like Ali Farka Toure.
Considered as the blues dna by Martin Scorsese in the documentary film of Mali in Mississippi, this music in its earliest form is at the origin of many of the musical genres we listen to today.

In a nut shell, this song is about depression and my personal struggles with it. Life circumstances can be heavy, but "just keep striving"!

The Moon's Theme

My first track of the year in 2020; I had no idea how prophetic it would be.  We all lost loved ones or know someone whose loved ones perished in the pandemic (still ongoing) and the heart's cry was to have "one more day" to say what needed to be said, to give them a hug or a kiss, share a laugh or a tear; to give them a fond and fitting farewell.  Annie @annie-smart-1 added a lovely vocal and piano part to this song that lifts it to another level.

It always amazes me how a collaboration can change the whole feeling of a song. Such is the case when Cloud artist Devin Locke reached out to me to collaborate.  I sent him a tune I had been working on, but would not necessarily stand on it's own.  What he did with his fine playing, getting inside the basic melody, bringing out the possibilities, reminded me of the playing of Django Reinhardt and helped me hear the song in a whole new light. Conversation At A French Cafe (with fine guitarist Devin Locke)

This tune came out of a wonderful convergence (happy accident); my collaboration with @devin-locke on "Theme and Variations" and a renewed interest in the painting of Bob Ross. One of the variations I became so taken with, I wanted to develop it into a full track using the original steel string voice of the collaboration then adding nylon string to enlarge the melody line.  "Happy Accidents" was a favorite saying of Bob Ross as he would go about his painting on Public Television.  I saw how it applied to me in how I have composed guitar music over the years;  the unexpected note or chord I first thought a mistake became a turning point for a phrase or melody line.  Some would call it "serendipity", for Bob Ross it was a "happy accident".  If you listen closely toward the beginning, you can hear my granddaughter Lily in the background, a bit of a cameo and very much a happy accident:)

Happy Accidents (For Bob Ross)

This is the story of my first “eclipse”, experienced alone in the wilderness of Oregon in August, 2017. It’s a long story, but the story behind this song.

I drove to Oregon alone to see the great American total solar eclipse of 2017. In Oregon, there is a famous national park called Crater Lake.  This is the deepest lake in America.   In the middle of Crater Lake is Wizard Island. This lake was formed when a huge volcano blew its top a long time ago.  My plan was to see Wizard Island, get a hotel room, and see the eclipse the next day.

There have been numerous stories of strange occurrences around this area from multiple people over the course of centuries.

The time was around 7 pm when driving up Crater Lake Mountain to see Wizard Island… I wasn’t sure where I was going, or how to get down from the mountain. Finally, I saw Wizard Island just as the sun started to set. I remember there was this misty haze in front of the Island. I could barely see it. I got the chills and a weird feeling... It was very eerie.

I tried to find my way down from the mountain in my car, but it was too late, I was lost, and it was too dangerous. There are areas where you can drive off a ledge and fall a long way. No fun. I had to pull over in the wilderness and spend the night in my car…

Hours passed, and I fell asleep.

What happened next is the strangest thing I’ve experienced in my life. I woke up, it was still night. My phone wasn’t working, my car wouldn’t start or turn on any lights. I didn’t know what time it was. It was disturbing to me they were both "dead", and I was panicked. Then I noticed the area around my car was alternating in brightness, like truck lights... But that wasn't it. I got out of my car to check it out.

But the sky was weird. The moon was weird. It was all weird. The moon was alternating between being clearly visible… And being pitch black. Like it was “blinking”. It would take 5 seconds to get black, then about 5 seconds to get bright again. The stars were barely visible. I stared in disbelief for maybe 30 seconds, it kept happening.  The air around me had a feeling of electric charge to it.   I started hearing a lot more animals, and they seemed to surround me. They were in the bushes and trees, everywhere. It got more troubling quickly when I could discern soft human voices. I couldn't see animals or people. 
I wasn't on any drugs, I was saving my drugs for the following day and the journey home.

Time seemed too slow. I backed up to my car, got in, and locked the doors. I remember a feeling of utter disbelief in my senses. Without any idea what to do, I climbed in the backseat and lied down. I thought any second I could die.

The next thing I remembered, I woke up. It was about 6:30 am. My car worked. My phone worked. And this was the morning of August 21st, 2017… The first day of the total solar eclipse which many of us would see later that day.  

But what I saw was something else.

Something very weird happened to me up there on that mountain that night, and it’s haunted me. I know several people will think "Manufactured lies!" Several others will think "Cool story bro...", well think what you want...

Later that morning when getting breakfast, still shook-up, I asked 2 waitresses if they heard of anything strange last night around Crater Lake. One said "no", the other said, "There's always something strange happening".

I remember one time a girl asked me why my music is so dark...
I’ve seen some sights.

Through The Night

Written for my 2nd granddaughter who turned 20 last November, she is pictured here as a three year old about the time the song was first written.  It was a stylistic breakthrough for me finding its birth on a Mexican classical guitar I found at a pawn shop and bought at a bargain because it needed repair.  Shortly after the glue dried, I started playing it and the opening phrases of the song just poured out and I thought "that sounds like my Grace".  So here it is on the Godin, a song for Grace and a prayer for you.

Grace To You

Angels play a huge role throughout the Biblical narrative.  They also play a role in our lives as well, probably much more than we realize...May Lemke is one such angel. I read about her years ago and her rescuing of a hopelessly disabled, premature baby she would adopt and name Leslie in an article titled "The Miracle of May Lemke's Love".
