Monday Playlist week of 3/21/2022

Fine string artist Don Jennings brought to my attention that not everyone knows what a "Requinto" guitar is.  It is a smaller nylon-string guitar tuned a 4th above standard tuning; think shifting each pitch one string toward the low E--A becomes E, D becomes A, etc. It is the tenor voice of the Mexican guitar family.  I became enamored with its tone a few years ago when guitar shopping during the pandemic.  I picked this one up as the others were being "disinfected" and was immediately smitten.  Music just poured out of it, even the beginnings of a song.  I had to buy it then and there so I could see how the song would turn out:)  It is the first on the playlist, "Return to Innocence".  It has the lead voice with a Gibson Jumbo giving some bottom end on some of the songs.

Songs Featuring the Requinto Guitar

First released on St Patrick's Day, I explore some Celtic-flavored melodies that came to me while playing a Requinto guitar.  It's higher tonality sounds a little more harp-like and they just seemed to pour out of it.  I add a little foundation with the Gibson SJ-100.

Crooked Wheel

Suzie Q is a tune with quite a long and rather remarkable history. This Classic was covered by many famous artists and bands, before it caught fire again as a breakout Monster Hit for Creedence Clearwater Revival (re-released on their 1968 Debut Album). The CCR version is still a primary frame-of-reference for me, but just re-created my own way with all due respect to the Original songwriter, Dale Hawkins. Hawkins wrote and first recorded it in 1957. Seems there's still a dispute about whether the '57 song was a remake of an earlier Sonny Boy Williams ditty of the same name, released as early as 1939. Anyway, vocals, all instruments, and production for this version by RiffBeach via RiffWerx Records & Production.  Hope it's enjoyed?  :D)))

A peppy little tune written for my fourth granddaughter 11 years ago (she just turned 16) but newly arranged and recorded.  A distinctive feature heard throughout this song is the falling 3rd interval that sounds like I'm calling out her name which I do from time to time whenever I get to visit.  Hopefully it will put a little spring in your step:)

The Little Oak Tree a wonderful tree that has been used for Construction work throughout time, it will grow up and mature and display a very fine tree, in all of it's glory, music has this connection it will mature into a crafted tune and test the age of time, from the root note it will show all of it's colours to open out and reach it's height. From the depths of my Heart I bring the timbered tune to you.

I thought about putting an adult in the room (bigger guitar) but decided no, let the children play:) There is also a wee little story line; there is playing and playing, trying out a different toy, playing some more, then the fatigue sets in and they start to wind down for a nap only to dream of playing some more...

Oh Susanna (Stephen Foster)

This tune came out of a wonderful convergence (happy accident); my collaboration with @devin-locke on "Theme and Variations" and a renewed interest in the painting of Bob Ross. One of the variations I became so taken with, I wanted to develop it into a full track using the original steel string voice of the collaboration then adding nylon string to enlarge the melody line.  "Happy Accidents" was a favorite saying of Bob Ross as he would go about his painting on Public Television.  I saw how it applied to me in how I have composed guitar music over the years;  the unexpected note or chord I first thought a mistake became a turning point for a phrase or melody line.  Some would call it "serendipity", for Bob Ross it was a "happy accident".  If you listen closely toward the beginning, you can hear my granddaughter Lily in the background, a bit of a cameo and very much a happy accident:)

A while back fine guitarist @devin-locke inspired me to revisit some of the early Miles Davis' recordings which are brilliant jazz masterpieces.  I wanted to try my hand at the style and have Devin join me if he felt so inclined.  He hasn't yet, but may do so in the future:) Anyway, a little tribute to a master...

Miles And Miles To Go

Written for my 2nd granddaughter who turned 20 last November, she is pictured here as a three year old about the time the song was first written.  It was a stylistic breakthrough for me finding its birth on a Mexican classical guitar I found at a pawn shop and bought at a bargain because it needed repair.  Shortly after the glue dried, I started playing it and the opening phrases of the song just poured out and I thought "that sounds like my Grace".  So here it is on the Godin, a song for Grace and a prayer for you.

I have a lot of faith that people can be strong enough to recognize where they have done (or are doing) harm and make sincere amends. I also believe that people have the power to heal and forgive wrong doings. It takes great strength to walk together through the fire of our pains and come out the other end holding hands, recognizing and honoring our differences while acknowledging and celebrating our similarities.  

May everyone get a chance to break bread together, enjoy some wine, and share some laughs. 

Thanks again to Calebass, Jon, and Janine for joining me together on a 3rd track. We make a great team! It was really fantastic to have Chris O and Belial Pelegrim finally join a track on my page. Chris O and Belial are two SoundCloud legends in my opinion. I am so grateful to be making music with all my favorite people. If only I had more time to make music with all of my favorites on the cloud. Who knows, maybe I do!

Angels play a huge role throughout the Biblical narrative.  They also play a role in our lives as well, probably much more than we realize...May Lemke is one such angel. I read about her years ago and her rescuing of a hopelessly disabled, premature baby she would adopt and name Leslie in an article titled "The Miracle of May Lemke's Love". Douglas Adams challenged the world and asked the question “Why?” in such a witty and perceptive way that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that it captured my reason to be in a way no writer has before or since. “The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy” has become an international best seller so it’s therefore a surprise, at least to me, not to see his name mentioned more frequently on regularly published lists of history’s most significant authors.  Whilst it’s no doubt true that I wouldn’t be someone whose opinion you’d seek out as an authority on such things, I do find it hard to believe that a man who created something so hilariously and philosophically original doesn’t get the true recognition he deserves. “Hitch Hiker” was so much more than a work of science fiction.  It was something that taught us the valuable life lesson that there really was no need to have an answer to everything.

I wrote this song during the lockdown, imagining how much more difficult things would have been in days gone by, when earlier generations had so very little means of communication. Travelling minstrels would go from town to town and entertain the local people. In my mind, I pictured townsfolk gathering to listen to a minstrel's song, bringing a message of hope, that their future would be brighter, all joining in to sing in candlelight, illuminating the darkness. I hope this song brings some joy in dark times.

We dedicate this arrangement to our friend @EMILIO-DIAS musician-curandero of the spiritual community Céu do Vale in Pindamonhangaba - SP Brasil.

We heard these Icaros, performed by Emilio with drum and voice, during a ritual. The strength and energy balance they gave to the circle were truly great. So Zu decided to make this arrangement.

DIGGING DEEP

Track shows a very delicate theme and a quite hard-riffed part, both alternating and finally flowing up to an endless symphonic dream (words are half a poem I wrote previously (not these, but lyrics below)).

Here's a song about an army of corn marching on a town at midnight. (Hey, these things happen in Wisconsin.)
Main guitars on this are a Vintage Modified Stratocaster and a Gretsch 5622T. The combination of the classic Strat tone and the Gretsch's Super HiLotron pickups is a recipe I personally love.
A single from the upcoming Penelope's Thrill album, "Twilight on Tunnel Road," due out on April 26, 2021.
All the songs on "Twilight on Tunnel Road" are about Lonnie and Chloe, who grow up on adjacent farms on the edge of the Driftless Area of Southern Wisconsin. This song is about Chloe's recurring dream of a vast army of corn marching at midnight toward the town. Ever since she was a child, Chloe has dreamed about the billowing ocean of corn covering the undulating hills around their farmhouse--the tall, thick stalks that towered above her head with leaves that looked like arms. The way the corn swayed in the wind made the stalks seem like people, like an orderly crowd of people standing in rows, or--by moonlight--a vast army. She dreamed about this corn army, sometimes imagining herself their queen. When she grew older, she would joke with Lonnie about this. Lonnie would call her Queen of the Corn and refer to cornfields as her troops.
