Critically-acclaimed Dutch act Weval (AKA Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers) arrive on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint with their new EP Changed For The Better. Digilog is an art and music project by the Swiss musician and designer David Plays aka David Zangger. After working as a producer for various artists in Switzerland, Germany and the United States, Digilog is his debut album as an independent artist.

"The idea of Digilog is to combine the organic beauty of the analogue with the perfection of the digital. I find this fascinating in music, as well as in design."

Most of the 12 tracks have their roots in the piano. David composes and produces his electronic music on the computer, where he brings in all the digital instruments over analogue keys like piano or drum pads. It is a perfect match when the musical influence of Madina Ninguém is added to these melancholic but positive tunes.

"I see my music as a soundtrack for everyday life. It should make simple moments special and give something to the listener, but not impose. This is exactly how Madina’s voice comes across to me – she becomes one with the song, in the same way as an instrument does." 

David uses the same principle of restraint for the visual and artistic part of the Digilog project. Each track has its own cover art. The photographs show different themes from the designer’s life, which inspired him aesthetically. To give these moments a visual context, the pictures are then photographed off the computer screen. Due to the extreme close-ups, each bright pixel of the LED display is visible; it creates an impressive grid of red, green and blue (RGB) light dots.  

"The exciting effect of the RGB grid are the two levels of viewing the art works. The further away you get from the picture, the more RGB points merge into a new and homogeneous colour. This is why the images somehow never get boring."

The creative head chose an unconventional approach for the release of the project. David doesn’t want to leave it all to a label or to a typical gallery, but prefers to take it into his own hands. What the artist wants for the project is that his work is free and open to everyone. Because of this reason, his full-length debut album can be listened to on the innovative website soundcloud.com. He also published the artworks on sssquare.com, an online gallery that provides all his work in high resolution for download.

"I want my music to reach people that appreciate it. If anybody wants to buy my music, they can buy the album on iTunes & Co. If they can’t afford it or don’t want to buy it, they have the opportunity to listen to Digilog on my website or on soundcloud."

The release date of David Plays – Digilog is 8 August 2012. Several tracks and remixes will be published in advance on facebook.com/davidplays.
