This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things by Whitney Phillips is a study and discussion on the significance of internet trolling and its’ relation to mainstream culture. In the text Phillips, a professor of writing at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, first discovered internet trolling through her younger brother and his friends. At first appalled by the content of the sites, Phillips saw a link between mainstream media and the anonymous online troll. Phillips adds on to a working definition by Merriam Webster which defines troll as: “An act in which to antagonize others online by deliberately posting inflammatory irrelevant or offensive comments or other disruptive content.” Phillips dives into this subculture and identifies different variations of trolls for example R.I.P. trolls who post on the Facebook memorial pages of the deceased. Phillips offers her criticisms of trolling behavior but also calls to responsibly American media and capitalist ideologies saying, “Many outlets are so eager to present the latest, weirdest and most sensational story that producers often fail to conduct even the most cursory background research.” In referencing the American media in this way, Phillips implies that both the trolls and mainstream culture are out for the same thing, sensationalism. Phillips research takes a deep look into American media culture and the subcultures it has created leaving the reader asking questions about Why We Can’t Have Nice Things and who is to blame for it.

Delaney DeAngelis and Alissa Demos from Detroit Hive discuss Aziz Ansari's book Modern Romance. Ansari, although a famous comedian, is just like many of us - trying to make sense of dating in the digital age. Since no such in-depth, sociological book about communicating with love interests existed, Ansari took it upon himself to create one. Along with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg, Ansari developed an immense research project wherein he conducted Subreddit forums, interviews and focus groups with experts and everyday people in major cities across the globe (including Tokyo, L.A. and Buenos Aires) to discuss modern romance. Using primary and secondary research, as well as himself and others’ personal experiences, Ansari looks cross-culturally, generationally and technologically to analyze the madness that arises when attempting to look for love in the digital age.

Phillips traces the origins of trolling to its proliferation into mainstream culture to ultimately conclude that it is not a cultural aberration, but very much in line with mainstream cultural practices. Phillips' interdisciplinary approach provides a unique analysis of one of many phenomenons that have emerged with the rise of the Internet.

Famous comedian Aziz Ansari teamed up with sociologist Eric Klinenberg to investigate the current climate of dating and romance in our technologically dependent world. He and his research partner traveled internationally as well as conducted online and in-person focus groups to collect qualitative and quantitative data about dating. Topics such as dating in the past, the first move, sexting, breaking up, etc. are investigated. Ansari's use of comedy pokes fun at the reader and makes often "taboo" topics more approachable and relatable. His findings give insight to readers who are in the dating world on how to improve as daters themselves, as well as an understanding of other daters around them.

Those Guys Have All The Fun 

Sports can bring people together like nothing else can. It can provide incredible moments, that will be talked about for generations. The beauty of sports is the spontaneous nature of it. You can never predict what is going to happen next. Before 1979, sports were covered locally, and occasionally on national networks, but never was there a network solely dedicated to sports. In the book, Those Guys Have All The Fun by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, the story of ESPN, is outlined to the public, and how that changed the sports landscape from then on. The Network, was originally supposed to be a cable channel broadcasting local sports, but has revolutionized the sports fans watching experience, expanding to 8 channels today. Sportscenter, the show repeated many times over the course of the day, and all through the night, is the main aspect of the channel. Sportscenter is an hour long show perfect for someone catching up on sports each morning. The book shows the evolution of ESPN from the perspectives of its most famous faces in the sports world.
