John Digweed’s long running and influential Bedrock label is delighted to welcome a new talent to the ranks: that man is Greek house and techno talent Argy, and now he debuts on the label with a brand new EP that has already been doing plenty of damage in Ibiza this summer. 

Argy has long been turning out cultured house and techno with a classical bent on labels like Cadenza, Poker Flat, BPitch Control and Ibadan Records. A thinking man’s DJ and producer, he has played all over the world, has been a regular at Sankeys Ibiza this summer and is as skilled at crafting albums as he is club-owning 12”s. 

Up first, ‘Belen’ is an epic seven minute workout that grows in stature as it unfolds. Spine tingling melodies swell above sweeping pads, rubber kicks and icy hi hats. It is a smooth and serene track that cannot fail to entrance whole dance floors as it rumbles on, right on the cusp between house and techno. 

Then comes ‘Afredo’, a more percussive work out but still one resplendent with rich chords and airy pads. Big, loose fingered piano chords dominate this one as they jangling above the mildly euphoric drum line and gallivanting kicks. 

Epic and fulsome, and impossible to ignore, this is a pair of tracks that fit perfectly with the Bedrock cannon at the same time as bringing something fresh to the label.

Following his triumphant return to Kompakt with SICKO (KOMPAKT 322), REX THE DOG digs deeper into the circuits of his custom-built modular synth on YOU ARE A BLADE, delivering a powerful trio of sharply contoured jams ready to cut to the chase. A true master of expressive might within a limited set of sounds, the much-acclaimed producer introduces the title track with breezy, shimmering arpeggios that are soon joined by a weighty, throbbing bassdrum - a lean and mean stealth banger that stands as unwavering as it is playful. The flipside builds an impressive amount of momentum as muscular acid-fest MUSIK HYPNOTISES stakes out raw and pounding synth stabs with its titular refrain, giving those straight-shooting riffs a properly wonked-out feel. Meanwhile, dry-witted closer WASP FACTORY pairs raspy synths with kinetic drum rolls and boldly cut-up vocal samples, another deceptively simple arrangement trimmed to perfection and for maximum effect.

Ein echter Meister expressiver Durchschlagskraft inmitten eines limitierten Klangsets, führt der hochgelobte Produzent mit luftig-schillernden Arpeggios an den Titeltrack heran, zu denen sich bald eine gewichtige, pochende Bassdfrum gesellt - ein schlanker Tarnkappenbomber, der ebenso standfest wie verspielt daher kommt. Die B-Seite baut mit der muskulösen Acidparty MUSIK HYPNOTISES beeindruckenden Schwung auf: raues Synthie-terrain wird vom namensgebenden Refrain abgesteckt und gibt dem Ganzen einen angemessen verpeilten Einschlag. Derweil verbandelt der lakonische Abschluss-Schieber WASP FACTORY kratzende Keyboards mit wirbelnden Trommeln und forsch zerlegten Vocal- Samples - ein weiteres täuschend einfaches Arrangement, passgenau zurechtmoduliert und auf maximalen Effekt getrimmt.

One of our favourite labels, Liminal Sounds, is readying a new release by Soda Plains in his Kickbacks EP (due out Dec. 11). You might not be familiar with the name Soda Plains just yet, but his bleeding-edge mix of punishing drums and growling bass won't be forgotten in a hurry. Caustic though it seems, there's a diamond in the rough in the form of some delicately crafted melodies, conspicuous in their brightness. That said, when set against the harsh, frantic percussion they take on an almost ominous tone. As the nights get longer and longer, Liminal Sounds have gifted you with the perfect tune to soundtrack the darkness.
