En 1814, Ivan Andreevich Krylov (1769-1844), poète Russe, écrivit « L’homme curieux » qui raconte l’histoire d’un homme dans un musée qui commence à voir toutes sortes de petites choses (microbes, etc), mais qui n’aperçoit pas l’énorme éléphant qui est dans la salle.

Des années plus tard, Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881), écrivit dans son romain « Les Démons » : « Belinsky était comme l’homme curieux de Krylov, qui n’était pas capable de voir l’éléphant dans le musée… »

Le sens s’inversa ensuite : le dictionnaire Oxford pour la langue anglaise fut le premier, en 1959, à se servir de la phrase : « Le problème du financement des écoles est devenu si grand, qu’il est équivalent à avoir un éléphant dans la salle. Le problème est si énorme, qu’on ne peut pas l’ignorer » 

D’ailleurs, l’expression idiomatique a été utilisé 44 ans auparavant dans les pages du journal britannique « Journal of Education », en 1915. La phrase fut présentée comme illustration triviale à laquelle un élève est incapable de répondre : « Y a t’il un éléphant dans la salle de classe ? ».

Pour moi, le processus créatif est très « mystérieux », parfois « crypté », et je passe un temps démesuré à remarquer toutes sortes des petits problèmes. Ç’est seulement au moment où j’arrive à voir « l’éléphant » que j’ai l’impression d’être sur la bonne voie.

A pink elephant in a room (2018), pour clarinette basse et électronique s’inscrit dans un imaginaire qui es la source d’un processus créatif à long terme de plusieurs œuvres tant visuelles, littéraires que musicales.

I found almost by chance these lines while reading a book by Thomas Ligotti and the image was so strong to induce me to investigate this mechanical (and suffering) nature of the human being, realizing a musical autopsy: the body/piece, gradually assembled and then dissected, shows its internal structure made up of imperfect gears and repeated modules and reveals itself as a machine, now turned off.

Program notes: The optical phenomenon known as Thin Film Interference describes the refractory behavior of light on overlapped thin layers of material. Visual phenomena such as the iridescence of oil on water, nacre from the inside of an oyster, the scales on the wings of moths and butterflies, etc. are explained in this way. This metaphoric artifact works as a model for almost the totality of the dimensions of the piece: construction of harmonic processes, transformation and evolution of timbre, textural operations on density and polyphony, rhythmical structures, to name a few. A second key aspect of the project is the use of real-time electronics (processed with MAX/MSP on a 8 channel circular display around the audience). The system works as a polyphonic granular synthesizer that samples the instruments in real time and processes the sound through complex granulation patterns, generating a shifting, warped perception of the physical space through spatial encoding. Thin film interference is my last attempt to articulate a musical discourse based on relationships o hybridization, both as source of material and as a backbone element of the writing.
