Disquiet Junto Project 0724: Work It

I’ve been meaning for ages now to make a track using only one single suite of plugins … and this week’s Disquiet Junto brief has finally inspired me into action! ALL of the sounds you hear in this track are courtesy of wonderful Sinevibes plugins, and it’s been really fun to explore more of what these genius little plugins can bring … with plenty more exploration to be had! @sinevibes

This track uses Torsion as the main synth source, with Diffusion also providing sounds from its wave shape modelling synth engine. As you can hear, I’ve gone slightly mad on the effects front! I’ve made use of Sinevibes’ Emission, Hexonator, Inertia, Luminance, Multitude, Cluster, Drift, Droplet, Octagon, Array, Zap, Albedo, Atom, and Dispersion …!

Enjoy! 😁🤗 It's been enjoyable, and there could easily have been a 20 minute version of this! 😂

Ad Hoc (disquiet0724)

This week's disquiet was to "Do that thing you’ve been meaning to do."  I have a tendency to use my Tides module as an audio oscillator all the time, instead of using it for other modulations that are not at audio rate. So, today I switched it to envelope mode, and used it to generate an evolving melody. I did use sequencers, but not for melodies - ONLY to sequence changing the settings on Tides, to change the range of the output before it goes to the quantizer, and to sequence the settings on Rings / Clouds / Lubadh. It seems Tides it pretty good as a melodic phrase generator, so I should have done this sooner!

I'm setting this to downloadable and creative commons - so if anyone wants to use it to make something feel free - but please let me know so I can hear what you do with it!

I have a tendency to overwork a track to the point where it drifts away from what I initially envisioned. Many times it works out okay but other times, it doesn’t. So this time I backed off and tried to keep it minimal, which was my original vision.

I've been working on my first album, selecting tracks and getting ready for mastering. I recorded this improvisation in September and finally got the time to mix this section.  This is part one of a 15 min improvisation. I'm happy with the result. I think I'm zeroing in on a workflow that fits me.

FALL 25 part one-Disquiet0724

This week’s @disquiet project has been very useful. I’d been meaning for months to teach myself how to create scores in Sibelius. For this exercise I exported MIDI from a composition called “Group Manifestation” (which I originally started in Logic) and imported it into Sibelius to produce a score for an open-call submission to the Contemporary Music for All collection. (Anyone can enter here: https://www.coma.org/get-involved/immediate-pieces-call-for-scores/.)

An unexpected benefit was that I could go back into Logic and audition how the parts fit together. That playback helped me refine the performance instructions for the piece.

Group Manifestation (disquiet0724)

It's a wonderful moment when the forest awakens in the morning at this time of year, with its colourful autumn leaves. I tried to capture that moment in music, creating a rhythmic electronic track rather than an ambient one.
This week's Disquiet Junto project inspired me to publish a track that I created entirely with the Yamaha SeqTrak groovebox — my first!

For this track I used the first project, which drove various instruments, including the usual prepared pianos, three double basses (with different settings), and a clarinet.
All filtered with reverbs, delays, and other FX.

De Vico's Theorem - disquiet0724

This week's #disquietjunto prompt was, "Do that thing you’ve been meaning to do."  I have been meaning to learn how to program my Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators for years and years and have never quiet gotten the hang out of it. After this project, I still don't quite have the hang of it :D  But I did manage to cook up the drumbeat which you hear throughout the song.

Having a play with the ppooll software, using one of my own samples (also recorded in ppooll in a previous session) and messing around with it. An awesome piece of (free!) software I'd highly recommend for anyone into sound experimentation. More details at https://ppooll.klingt.org/

Inspired by Oval, Jan Jelinek and other 90s trailblazers of the "glitch" genre.
Played in ppooll, then slight refinements after the performance, including fuzz guitars added on softly in the background.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
