Holy mother of breaks! How come I didn't come across this gem earlier!?

This week's RA Podcast marks something of a debut for Infinity Division, the new solo project from Canadian artist Ash Luk, best known as one half of EBM-techno duo Minimal Violence. (Minimal Violence had itself been a solo project since last year, when cofounder Lida P left the group.) Getting his start in Vancouver's punk scene as part of the band Lié, Luk's approach to dance music is informed not only by those origins but by Western Canada's long history with industrial music and techno (spot Skinny Puppy and Tunnel Canary in the tracklist).  

Minimal Violence first impressed us with their hardware-focused house and techno, a harder-edged version of the sound that was sweeping Vancouver at the time, before moving on to Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolour and then Tresor for a series of records that saw their sound become more expansive, sharper and more melodic, incorporating not just techno and punk influences but also trance, EBM and more. These are the genres that feed into Infinity Division, and Luk's RA Podcast hurtles through everything from old Prodigy, '90s German hard trance, Canadian breakcore and new tracks from his project. This is heavy dance music that's also heavy on melody, unafraid of huge crescendoes that hit that sweet spot between punishment and euphoria. Buckle up.

110 minutes of Japanese techno from its pre-2006 golden age.

One of the most underappreciated and rich lineages in electronic music comes from the deft hands and sharp minds of Japan's mid-90s techno pioneers, for whom techno was just as much about relentlessly driving forwards into the future, completely ignoring Western techno conventions, and making music for the brain, as it was about making people dance. This philosophy has underlined my DJ practice since its conception, and this mix is an ode to them.

Techno is not just socially countercultural in its establishment of modern rave culture, but also an intrinsically experimental genre in a purely musical sense. There is a lot of discourse on its socially countercultural roots; in the way it defied the day-night cycle, repurposed urban environments, and redefined how people recreate and find purpose and community. However, far less people talk about the mindset of the music itself in its progenitive form. Its Detroit pioneers were using new machinery to make music that sounded like absolutely nothing that had come before it. It was their priority to create a musical language that was completely, unrecognisably cutting-edge, and this priority is infused in all of the genre's earliest works. Understanding this foundation is essential to understanding techno's DNA.

As techno took off in the States, and then in Europe, this priority lessened in intensity as the genre's conventions were established, and the "normal-ness" of techno was concreted into popular consciousness. Across the other side of the world, however, Japan's techno golden age was about to spark into a fiery, defiant, bizarre, and aggressively creative peak. 

This burgeoning scene would go on to create some of the most singularly experimental works of techno the world has ever seen. This is not like any other regional techno scene that mirrors the conventions of the US or Europe, waiting for approval and validation by adopting its sounds. This is a separate lineage, a separate cultural tree, that developed *in parallel* to the techno we hear today, before arguably fizzling out around the mid-2010s as minimal techno began emerging as the dominant sonic power in the genre. 

Some of these tracks got me into techno, and they form a crucial cornerstone of my style and mode of expression as a DJ. 

Here are 110 minutes of some of this era's best work, glued and patterned together by myself.
We don't recapture techno's "golden age" by copying their sounds - we bring it back to life by thinking like they did.

Bloody hell, I tinkered endlessly with this mix - mainly because it was getting harder and harder to be subjective (as I got more involved in my own productions and label that year) but there're quite a few interesting notes to be made.

Influential labels like PCP were starting to fade. Dance Ecstasy, who in their heyday back in '95 put out a staggering 20 or so releases that year, slowed down to only 6 in '97 (and then one final 12" in '98). Lost/Cold Rush put out their last release (included here) and Kotzaak only two. Sounds Never Seen also put out their last 12" (not sure if that 7" two years later really counts? hmmm) and even the momentum of Nu Black/No U-Turn/Techstep faltered as Ed Rush defected, hooked up with Optical, switched up his sound to 'Neurofunk' and went down the wormhole before the year was out (their first 12" coming out on Planet V). But Panacea was waiting in the wings and 'Shrillstep' was already mashing it down on the Hekate sound system; that and broken beat industrial/techno was the name of the game that year (with impressive runs of releases on the likes of Laurent Ho's Uncivilized World label etc). 

CF in his Praxis Newsletter 12 (Aug 1997) talked about a "new era of nuclear fission of previously seperate or even opposed 'genres'…the impure…combining elements [to make] something heterogenous and new, an attack on the petrified and poor values of the past." 

It certainly felt like that at the time!

I'll stick my hand up and admit my most glaring omission: French speedcore (but no need to mention DHR heh). I didn't collect so much of it at the time - it wasn't really my cup-of-tea anyway, but there was big momentum and development there in '97 - Dead End etc, new labels like Widerstand and old hands like Fischkopf holding it down, with Hangars Liquides just about to burst onto the scene the following year.

Not sure it'll be feasible to do a '98 mix? The diaspora is possibly too great by then and tastes too diffuse? Any suggestions/lists let me know and maybe we can blather about it like true trainspotters. Enjoy!
